Which do you like better? Which is the better film? Who'd win in a fight: Rick Blaine or Charles Foster Kane? Are there wrong answers? There's always that one guy who'll say that one is overrated.
because of the groundbreaking movie techniques (sound, film focus, etc). The funny thing about that is that Orson Wells credits his preparation for CK to watching John Ford's Stagecoach 40 times! (Wikipedia)
Casablanca was made with the thought of being a "B" movie, but it caught lightning in a bottle, with the perfect story for it's time. Casablanca hits the highlights CK never could, the core of it reaches greater heights. Nothing in CK matches the La Marseillaise scene; the actors who sing in it have fled from the real horrors of Nazi Germany, and you can see it in their tears.
CK is a GREAT story, but I could never relate to Hearst, despite the superb performance by Wells. Casablanca is something greater than the sum of it's parts. Like Rick Blaine said at the end.."Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
African Queen, Treasure of the Sierra Madre and Cain Mutiny are better Bogart films, IMO.
I agree with those who find stretches of Citizen Kane a bit boring, but it contains so many incredible images that remain among the best ever put on film.
Casablanca by a hair. Just more entertaining & has soooo many great lines & fabulous performances. The groundbreaking cinematography in Kane was exceptional.
Casablanca a lot more. Citizen Kane reminds me of Avatar-- I don't necessarily love the movie, but I respect and understand the magnitude of their cinematic achievements
Bogey as the bitter but reluctant hero is hard to top. And Ingrid Bergman is stunning in black and white.
No explosions. No special effects or nudity. No vulgar language. Casablanca has great acting and that thing that is missing from all Hollywood flicks today. A story.
While I enjoyed Casablanca more in my younger days.
I know this is off topic but I recently saw a young film critic who reviewed one of my favorite classics "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" and agreed that this is one of the most underrated classics of cinema. A combination of comedy, drama and horror. Didn't realize it was an inspiration for a lot of modern horror films.
RE: I enjoy Casablanca, but Ido t think it's a great film.

I agree Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a better Bogart film as is the Maltese Falcon.
Casablanca is the more "entertaining" film, but Citizen Kane is a monumental achievement. It introduced a tremendous number of cinematic techniques that are taken for granted now but were revolutionary at the time.
Would be "Which would you watch first?" I'd start with CK, marvel in it's cinematography, camera angles, and points of view, then Casablanca for the story, the entertainment, and IB
We some times think of movies as disposable fluff. Mainly because so so many of them are just that.
My father had just met my mother and was on his way to Europe the following Tuesday morning.
Their last date for two years...Saturday night at a theater in Times Square. Their lives and future up to fate. The movie was new. It was Casablanca. Pretty powerful stuff if viewed from that perspective and in those shoes
The impact of the movie on them rendered CK an artifact.
I do admire CK. Apples and oranges both deserve appreciation.

In answering the OP's question, I think your statement above answers it best. While not a film buff, I can see how Citizen Kane is viewed by many critics and film buffs as one of the greatest movies made (for the same reason as stated above well by many). However, because I'm not a film buff, I base the movies I like on my own personal experiences and how the movie impacts me (similar with books) and less so on how well it's made. And that leads me to picking some shitty movies over much more acclaimed ones, according to my wife...:)
with all of Kane's innovations, I recommend you watch it a second time with Roger Ebert's commentary track, which is available on many versions of the DVD and BluRay. It's informative and entertaining.
first comment.
CASABLANCA: Romance,politics,subtle humor,sexual implication(Bulgarian girl and Louie),mystery, a (somewhat) surprise ending.
If they had thrown in a 'who won the '38 WS?' question or something-sports, sort of, too.
" I'm shocked shocked that there's gambling going on"
Watched CK a while ago and thought it was so fucking boring. Don't know what all the fuss was about. The lame twist/ending?
Casablanca was actually watchable but didn't live up to the over the top hype.
Maybe in their day they were groundbreaking or whatever but that kind of garbage production and acting doesn't fly today. Whoever creates an all time movie list and puts CK number 1 should be punched in the face. Artsy pretentious BS.

Every scene is iconic, and it has some of the most memorable lines in movie history. I really like Maltese Falcon, enjoyed African Queen, but Casablanca gets me every time.
RE: Overrated movies but I guess real movies had to start somewhere.

If I were given the option of watching either film, I'd pick Casablanca without hesitation.
Is there another question?
12 guys in a room talking for 2 hours. Has to be the greatest movie with the smallest budget ever made.
It's like comparing Super Bowl XXI to Michelangelo's David.

Don't leave us waiting... what's your pick?

Is it just me or does she look exactly like Debra Messing?
I'll never pick one over the other... never
The answer is Slapshot. And Josey Whales.
Would rather watch Key Largo or Big Sleep over it most of the time, though.

I haven't seen Casablanca in a LONG time.
Johnny Rocco wants more!

What is the most memorable thing from CK - "Rosebud"?
Lots of great lines in Casablanca. "round up the usual suspects..."
I guess that is why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream - everybody ahs different tatses.

We're doing the play 12 Angry Men but those only 6 of us so we have to be twice as mean

Yeah. Not enough explosions. Or CGI

That's a very sophisticated take...
