I just re-watched the games and here are some things that I came away with:
(I will try to stay away from the obvious)
1. I am so effing excited about Weston Richburg. It seems like every productive run had him involved. Whether it was a combo block with Beatty, him sealing the edge as Beatty kicked out or (my favorite) watching him pull. He is feet are ridiculous. For being such a small guy (by NFL guard standards) he can play with power and I really think that is because he is so quick out of his stance and so balanced (because of his great feet). It will be interesting to see how things shake out when Schwartz comes back.
2. I would not be surprised if Johnathon Hankins is replaced in the starting line up by Patterson. Hankins was awful. Absolutely dominated by the Redskins LG. Turned around, pancaked...everything. Its just one game and maybe he will look like a pro bowler next week but he was consistently beaten by one guy. Patterson got a lot of PT in the 2nd half.
3. The 20 yard TD run by Alfred Morris was a thing of beauty. Schematically and technically executed perfectly.
4. Jacquain Williams may be athletic and I really like him but his tackling was pretty bad. He will probably lead the Giants in tackles but that might not be a good thing.
5. Beatty's aggressiveness is what surprises me. He has always been athletic enough but he is going after people. It really caught my eye when he tackled the LB who intercepted the Reuben Randle debacle. He tattooed him. Then it reminded me of when he ran down the Arizona player who looked like he might be on his way to a pick six. Might be me reading into it but he just looks really confident out there.
Kuhn had 1 tackle and two assists, so he must be better than both....
Hankins has been solid thus far......he is the future at tackle.....
As for the Morris TD, yes there was good blocking as well as poor defensive play by the Giants....
Hank has left a generally positive impression on me and I seem to recall one giant taking a god awful angle on the TD run by Morris...
Are the DTs playing left and right exclusively and then shifting to 1-tech or 3 according to the opponent's formation? (Under vs over defensive fronts?) Or are they handling, typically, 1 tech and 3 tech roles based via personnel, or is PF mish-mashing where his DTs line up?
In any case Kuhn, in the few snaps I noticed him in, played the 1 tech mostly with authority at the POA and good lateral movement and closing tackles to boot.
I think Kuhn is going to earn more snaps inside at 1 tech.
JPP was all over the place. Moore played well. Kiwi got it together after he let Cousins boot leg around him early in the game when he came crashing in to defend the run.
The biggest thing is how well this offensive line is playing. When Schwartz is able to return I have to believe if they continue to play this well he may have to default to a backup role. Why upset the chemistry.
The Morris TD run was a combination of a good call by Washington and several Giants taking bad angles off their blocks and to ball. Hey, sometimes the other guys do a good job too...
Rather, after you said you wouldn't be surprised if he's benched soon ;)
Please keep in mind, I was watching this game in a vacuum. As I said, he may look like a pro bowler next week but against Washington he did not look good and Patterson got a lot of snaps in the second half.
Watch the film and key on him. He was dominated at the point of attack, over and over. On one play he was literally spun around by the LG and on another he was de-cleated. On others he was just straight up stoned at the LoS.
Again, not saying he won't be good or that he is not the future but I would not be surprised to see Patterson take over if this continues.
Re-watch the film, key on him and then tell me I am wrong.

You may be correct about Schwartz to a backup roll. I say that because I observed that the line didn't start to play well until Schwartz went out. Not saying Schwartz was the cause of the poor play just that the changes made when he went out seemed to energize this line.

Some people though Kuhn was a goner for the final cut downs but IMO he's the only guy physically capable of backing up Hankjins on the roster. Patterson was never a nose and seems to be playing there due to experience and that he's added on a ton of weight over his career. He's not a 1. Kuhn was banged up at the end of the preseason so i think Fewell used what he had. IMO as the season goes on Imo he's the main back up there unless its an obvious passing down.
Quote:
I saw a defensive line rotation that was almost like line shifts in a hockey match. They all played well. I thought Kuhn had a good game. What it does is keep those guys fresh and enable them to give max effort evertytime they are on the field. You saw the constant pressure they put on Cousins. All night they were in his face.

This line of thinking would have merit, except that the line was playing poorly when Schwartz was in, and the line was playing poorly when Schwartz was out. He hasn't played in like a month, and it's only in the last two weeks the OL has looked like a different unit.
With the 10 day rest, I'd expect him to raise hell in Atlanta.
