subway platforms police all over reassuring, get on a packed bus and the realization that we are vulnerable and screwed and that is where they will hit us and not a damned thing we can do about it.
people extrapolate from one horrific day the notion that we're Israel, and even as awful as things have been in Israel over the last quarter-century it's still a disconnect between perceived risk and actual risk. Live your life, the odds are infinitesimal that it will be ended by an act of terrorism.
Believe me I am, but it hit my like a 2x4 being on the bus with a driver that could care less and it was standing room only and if someone had bad intentions there was nothing to stop him
on days I take the subway to work (I often walk, but take subway when I'm feeling lazy or the weather sucks), and twice in the last few weeks the cops have been down there checking bags near the turnstiles
...people are paranoid about all sorts of shit, when they all-too-willingly and happily jump right into the single most dangerous threat facing them, day after day. Hey! Let's play some tunes! Take the kids!

A little disconcerting, I would agree
That's a very common occurrence, if not daily at some subway stops. They're random checks, I walk by with a gym bag everyday but have yet to be stopped.
are you complaining that there are no armed guards
presence of police activity around the 59-63rd and Lex area as well. New security policies have been implemented for my building (if you're carrying a duffle bag, luggage, etc, it will now be subject to inspection, all delivery trucks/large boxes are also being inspected and we've apparently just hired more security guards to patrol the perimeter and entrances to the building).
I think they may have a hunch that something is brewing. I hope to God not.

No terrified of everyday life but this terrorism stat is pretty stupid considering 9/11. Can't happen? It did happen
Big difference between "Can't Happen" (which I don't think he said) and a realistic assessment of the odds it will happen. (Which I think he did say)
City of 8 Million people. 2606 New Yorker's Killed.
And I don't want to understate the fact that NYC is still a high-value terrorist target, and that preventing attacks is a prime function of our government and agencies.
But the odds are, it ain't gonna be you. Plain and simple. And for those of us who don't live in NYC? It will never happen to you. You can put money on it.

Screw that...I'm kind of a big deal, so sure it's going to happen to me. Some terrorist out there is planning right now to kill me. And the gobment is collecting and developing an intelligence product on me. Then throw in the Ebola virus...that shit is just waiting to infect me as well.
You can shove your statistics right up your pooper!

"Never" happen to anyone outside of NYC? You might want to try to explain that to some folks who worked at the Pentagon.
and kill me some day. They've been out to get me ever since I threatened them with virtualization. Worst part is the data center is practically lights out and with how cold they keep it in there nobody will even smell my rotting body for at least a month.

Is this a precursor to Skynet? Shit's about to get real for you, bro.
though I don't believe you can stop anyone from getting on a bus, subway or an NJ transit / LIRR / Metro-North train. Consequently, there is potential catastrophic risk in the system that hopefully is snuffed out at the front end.
Saying only 2,606 died in WTC is not telling the whole story
You are not mentioning the enormous cost of those attacks that we are still paying for today. It has had collosal repercussions in addition to the horrible loss of life. A loss of life of people who should not have perished in that fashion.
There is no doubt that there could be other attacks with similar impact in the comming years.

Laugh all you want, that rolled up magazine is effective. The swizzle stick, not so much. ;)
A little disconcerting, I would agree
One in 108 chance of being killed in a car wreck.
Guns? One in 340.
Planes? One in 7,229.
BEES?!!! One in 71,107.
Lightning? One in 126,158.
Terrorism? One in 20 MILLION.

So now you know what I think you should do with your fears of terrorists.
How we will fucking die. (NSC) - ( New Window )

You have to come in direct contact with a victim showing symptoms to contract the disease.
Anyway, there's your vision for the day.
You're welcome.
Based on BBI medical experts, I am putting our chances at 50-50...
I think they may have a hunch that something is brewing. I hope to God not.
Makes ya wonder.
