Giants DBs vs. ATL WRs

jerrydo : 10/1/2014 1:15 pm
This will be a nice test for the defense this week. Matty Ice (nice nickname) is playing well and his receivers are healthy. Their running game leaves a bit to be desired but I expect we will see more of their change of pace backs. Overall, this is probably a better O than we faced in Detroit. So what do you guys think?

DRC will get Julio. Does Prince line up with Roddy White and follow him even if he plays out of the slot or does McBride?

Either way, I am looking forward to the match-up.
I worry less about us vs good WRs then vs good TEs and pass catching

Rbs.
I think we should run the ball down their throats...
Klaatu : 10/1/2014 1:21 pm : link
And let Matty Ice melt on the bench.
A few things....

You're getting them outside, don't discount that. They are an somewhat a different team indoors, particuarly at home.

Secondly, JJ is quietly (if that is possible) approaching the best WR in the game. He was hurt last year, but he's going to kill people this year.

You need to rattle Matt Ryan, who again benefits from playing up to 9 games in a dome. He's a good QB, but you can get to him. Arm strength to me is his biggest weakness.

Shut down what running game they have, apply the pressure has to be the game plan.

If they can run it, it will really make things difficult.

DB's
stretch234 : 10/1/2014 1:24 pm : link
pressure Ryan and he will not want to hang in there at all. The DL should be able to put a lot of pressure on him this week
Falcons missing 2 starters on the OL. Even Perry should be able to
Victor in CT : 10/1/2014 1:27 pm : link
figure out that pressing DBs and chasing Ryan would be a good idea

28th in run defense giving up 154 avg.per game. However, their passing defense is #30 giving up 276 yards per game.

Hit 'em high and low. A good mix and they should be reeling after it's 21-3 at half time.

I feel pretty good about that matchup.
Curtis in VA : 10/1/2014 1:35 pm : link
As good as I can, considering the rules.

But DRC and Prince are a good matchup for any WR combo. Probably only a handful of CB duo's that are as good.
Better group of skill players than Detroit
njm : 10/1/2014 1:35 pm : link
But as banged up as their OL is I'm not sure overall it's a better O.
Fewell can be very aggressive in this game.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/1/2014 1:35 pm : link
I think he's underrated in that regard. The man picks his spots carefully, but he will turn up the heat when the situation warrants it. Considering the state of Atlanta's line and their heavy reliance on Jones as their only big-time weapon, this game is a great opportunity to let the dogs out.
Julio is kind of like TO 2.0
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 10/1/2014 1:40 pm : link
DRC is a great cover man, but I could see him getting physically overpowered by Jones. It's a tough matchup for anyone.

Our CBs should do a better job than most teams at matching up with those Atlanta receivers, but it's going to come down to our DL taking advantage of a depleted Atlanta OL.
Waiting to hear whether Blalock's back made it through practice.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/1/2014 1:41 pm : link
With him, the Falcon line is patchwork. Without him, it's laughable.

Of course, that's on paper. Guys like Konz and Carimi might have one good game in them.
The Giants got this...
D HOS : 10/1/2014 1:45 pm : link
If they concentrate, keep their heads in the game and stay aggressive, they have this. The Falcons o-line is a huge mess and they are a downfield passing team so that works well for us. The TEs (Pascoe!) and backs are not scary in the pass game. And their rush is average even with a good line, which currently their line is not.

Matt Ryan is playing awesome and his WR's are fantastic but based on their line and the Giants' D, I just don't see them doing more than a few big plays and a couple of nice TD drives. Maybe a FG or 2. At most.

On the Giants' side, if their O plays like it has the last 6 quarters or so, they will shred the Falcons D.

Botton line, I have Matt Ryan on my fantasy team and I am not starting him - playing with my head, not my heart.

Giants win, 27 - 17
can't underestimate this team....
Simms11 : 10/1/2014 1:52 pm : link
Regardless of o-line issues, they're still the #1 offense in the NFL. Had over 400 yards of offense and 28 points last week, supposedly getting their ass handed to them?!

They want to show everyone they can win on the road outside
Think this game will be very difficult for us.

Lastly, our Specials scares me in this game!
They gave up 500 yards of total offense to a rookie QB, 1st start

without Adrian Paterson.

Yes, they got their ass handed to them.
I watch Matt Ryan a fair amount and his mobility and ability
Jimmy Googs : 10/1/2014 1:57 pm : link
to run for first downs is often overlooked. He is not an escape artist, but does not hesitate to pull it down and run for 5-6 yards to convert on 3rd down if needed.

Ryan also doesn't throw particularly well on the run, but Roddy White is fairly adept at shaking a CB after he is initially covered.

Julio is just a handful and needs Safety help without question.
Justin Blalock didn't practice today
sjnyfan : 10/1/2014 2:04 pm : link
If he misses the game along with the others already on IR the WR's may not matter as much. Ryan won't have time to get them the ball.
Julio
gmen9892 : 10/1/2014 3:00 pm : link
is going to be a load to handle as he can do everything. Hes got speed to get deep, but can also overpower you. Have to think DRC gets matched up on him because of his height.

Having said that, Julio was held in check last week by weaker corners on the Vikings. So we should be able to contain them provided we get the necessary pass rush.
yeah....but as we all know

Play Rolle over the top to help DRC with Julio? If we do that Prince will have a huge responsibility keeping Roddy in check without a lot of safety help. I'd consider that because if you can limit Julio the Falcons are going to wilt with their OL situation
Line of Scrimmage
I wanna be Torbor, sucka : 10/1/2014 3:51 pm : link
The Giants d-line needs to control the line of scrimmage, not just rush the passer. If they can do that and stop the run, they can get away with 7 in the box and help over the top with Julio.

I know the Giants got DRC to match up one on one, but I just don't see the need here. Julio, to me, is the one guy who can kill us. If you want DRC one on one, put him against Roddy White, and double Julio with Prince on him.
Lets get Stevie Brown back in there
Jimmy Googs : 10/1/2014 3:54 pm : link
to prevent the deep threat to Julio...

I didn't see last week game so I don't know at what point the oline injuries happened and how much that offensive production was accomplished with the reserves. But unlike last week, this week they start with either a 3rd year backup center who is not very good yet or a totally unknown UDFA rookie, We don't know yet if Blalock will go so their RT and LG situation is still unknown. At best RT is a reserve and at worst RT is a scrub and LG is a reserve playing out of position.

So that oline is truly a mess and we should manhandle them negating most of the deep balls to those top tier WR's. And they have no real running threat to take the pressure off that way. To be sure, they can run and certainly pass and if you say they were the #1 offense overall that is not a surprise to me, but not this week.

The wildcard though is as you said, they Falcons want to be a road team and an outdoor team and desperately need a win. So they are highly motivated. Including Osi against his old team. But I think that if we get up on them they will start playing very tight and making a lot of mistakes.

So like I said, as long as the Giants stay focused and execute, they should have no issues winning the game.

It will be interesting to see how the Falcons will compensate for the oline.

The radio talk in ATL is how this game will be a grade on the GM Dimitroff at providing depth and on Smith's staff for preparing that depth.

I was referring to their offense, which I think actually had a lead in the game. Their defense is another issue altogether, as they are almost the worse I'm the league, but their offense is #1.

I'm most concerned with our ability to stop their passing game and our ability to be successful on specials.

Agree... First & foremost, dont give up the big play/long TD, or turn the ball over giving them a short field. Make them try to drive down the field.

Even if White is reasonably successful against Prince, if they dont give up the big plays, more often than not, the Giants DL should be able to disrupt their offense before they're in scoring position.

I'd also imagine they use max protect often, which should limit Hester's snaps.
Yes, our Specials continue to be head-scratching...
Jimmy Googs : 10/1/2014 4:46 pm : link
Outside of D Moore's punt block 2 weeks ago, Tom Quinn's units continue to have mental lapses every week...

Detroit - had our own punt blocked, and got Weatherford hurt on another close one.

Arizona - Punt Return for TD, Demps fumbled KO

Texans - bad snap on FG attempt, surprised by fake punt

Redskins - Parker doesn't field punt and Redskin's turn field by like 85 yards

STs have mostly sucked since Quinn's been here. Whats new?!!

TC needs to find a way to distroy those pictures Quinn has on him!!!

The Giants Special Teams have been good at KO coverage
Corey : 10/2/2014 12:37 pm : link
They have allowed the 2nd fewest yards per kick off attempt (Only Dallas has been better covering kick off returns). They are the worst in the NFL at covering punts, however, allowing over 15 yards per attempt. That needs to improve.
Our special teams

have sucked since the Fassel years. I cringe every time they take the field.
This isn't about ATL WR's and Giants secondary...
Corey : 10/2/2014 1:10 pm : link
This game is about the Falcon's OL vs the Giants DL. There should be debate about whether or not Ryan has time to strike at all. The Falcons OL is abysmal; they ran a TE out there last week to play OT for Pete's sake. JPP is the #1 4-3 DE in the league against the run, and they have an emerging star in Hankins at DT alongside veteran stalwart Jenkins. On the other side you have a rejuvenated Kiwanuka and Ayers both playing really well. If the Giants cannot crumble Ryan's protection and stuff the run, then they do not deserve to do anything this year. That is how bad ATL's OL grades out.

Offensively, Atlanta has the first or second worst defense in the NFL no matter how you measure it. The Giants put up 30 on a far more competent defense in the Houston Texans. It will be a severe disappointment if the Giants don't score 35 to 38 pts on this team.

When you look at this objectively, you have an Atlanta team with one really good component with several more components that are absolute liabilities. The Giants are poor on special teams except for kick off returns coverage where they're quite good, statistically average on defense, and quite possibly a top tier offense. The arrow for Giant's defense is pointing up, whereas the arrow for Atlanta is still pointing down--this according to their own writers and fans who see no relief in sight for their team on that side of the ball.

My prediction is that Hester gets a return TD because that is just the way it goes for the Giants, and they score a big play TD and kick a field goal. Giants 38 - Atlanta 17.

jerrydo : 10/2/2014 1:21 pm : link
Thanks for adding to the debate. That is the whole point. I agree that the giants pass rush should disrupt the ATL passing attack. I think Prince and DRC are impressive and I look forward to seeing what they can do going forward and this is their best test since Detroit (assuming Ice has any time to deliver the ball).

Also working against the Falcons is their difficulties on the road.
Jones is questionable
pjcas18 : 10/2/2014 1:25 pm : link
with an ankle injury. I think he'll play and this is probably pre-game histrionics, but you never know.
RE: RE: This isn't about ATL WR's and Giants secondary...
Corey : 10/2/2014 1:32 pm : link
I definitely think DRC and Prince will hold up against White and Jones long enough for the DL to get penetration and disrupt what Ryan wants to do. I actually want a few plays where the DL can't get through so that we can see what we really have with our secondary against top flight WR's. Not too many though ;)
