Interesting numbers while watching Odell Beckham video..

Blue Blood : 10/1/2014 8:57 pm
so watching some Youtube video this blurb comes up..

At the combine he was the ONLY player to run a Sub 4.5 40, Sub 7.0 in the three cone, Sub 4.0 in the 20 yard shuttle, and Sub 11.0 in the 60 yard shuttle.. that combines with a 38.5" vertical is very impressive..

I didnt realize he was THAT athletic.. Hope he can bring that to the field and help the Giants...
He's our Percy harvin in the making

Just another measurables guy.

This
I think this player
dune69 : 10/1/2014 9:16 pm : link
will give us a dimension that we've never enjoyed. He has that next gear that will break down a defense. He will also take a bunch of pressure off Cruz and even some off Randle. If this kid stays healthy, this will be fun.
I don't think
Big Rick in FL : 10/1/2014 9:20 pm : link
He is similar to Percy Harvin at all. Beckham is a much better receiver IMO. He is better catching the deep ball, going over the middle. If we have one WR who skillset is similar to Percy it is Jerrel Jernigan.

Really don't know who I would compare him to, but certainly isn't Harvin. I think he is a much better receiver then Percy has ever been.

This. ODBJrIII is a much more natural receiver than Harvin is with much better hands. He's not as strong and fast though.
to elaborate
chris r : 10/1/2014 9:27 pm : link
Harvin is so dangerous with the ball in his hands and not a great receiver so you have to scheme to find ways to get him the ball (out of the backfield, reverses, specials).

Beckham can just line up at WR and make plays for you.
I hope he doesn't try to turn on his jets to fast when 1st back

He actually reminds me a bit of a bigger Randall Cobb when watching his LSU highlights
His Routes
RAIN : 10/1/2014 9:37 pm : link
and change of direction, coupled with hands and speed, will be a very difficult cover. By next year, Cruz should benefit from the attention shifting away from him in the passing game.
A better Golden Tate ?

Just thinking body type / speed combo
He is not Percy Harvin
rdt288 : 10/1/2014 9:50 pm : link
Percy Harvin literally has world class speed

ODB is fast as he'll, quicker than fast and runs routes like a seasoned vet

I think he is a young Steve Smith (former panther and now Steve smith, sr in Baltimore)

It's getting real up in here!
What's Harvins speed?
Canton : 10/1/2014 9:58 pm : link
OBJ ran a 4:31 40 at the combine.
While his time was adjusted to a 4.43
Blue Blood : 10/1/2014 10:01 pm : link
during his actual run he posted a 4.4 and a 4.31... so anyway you slice it.. he is fast... but the ability to change direction and the burst.. if he can play.. he could be good..

Reese usually gets it right on receivers... Steve Smith, Nicks, Cruz.. Manningham.. all good pickups.. that were productive... Randle looks like he is starting to come on...
Jernigan.. oh well cant win them all..

Lets hope he hits on OBJ...
Percy
Big Rick in FL : 10/1/2014 10:02 pm : link
Ran a 4.41 at the combine and Beckham Jr ran a 4.43. I'd say Beckham is close on field speed.

He reminds me more of Steve Smith then anybody else I can think off. He is a great deep threat and good with the ball in his hands. Not as good as Smith, but still good.

Harvin had a 4.45 20 yard shuttle and 6.95 3 cone.

Beckham had a 3.94 20 yard shuttle and 6.69 3 cone.

Which matters much more then running in a straight line.

Harvin's times Lo 4.28 High 4.48 official time 4.39

Beckham Lo 4.34 High 4.54 official 4.38

I dont think there is any question that ODB has better footwork, and his #s in the ss and cones prove that.

Harvin is legitimately a world class athlete. He was running the 100m in 10.xxs in highschool.

Big Rick in FL : 10/1/2014 10:21 pm : link
Are those pro day times? Those aren't correct according to NFL.com. Either way both guys are extremely fast. Doesn't matter though they aren't similar players at all. Beckham Jr is a more gifted receiver then Percy ever has been. Better hands, route runner, going over the middle, getting deep.
Oh yeah
Big Rick in FL : 10/1/2014 10:25 pm : link
Def not saying Beckham Jr is faster. That would be a flat out lie. I just don't particularly care for the 40 at all. Rarely do you see a player run 40 yards off the line untouched or even 10-20 yards.

I love Percy and I have since I saw him first practice at UF. He is an awesome football player. Don't think he is as good as Beckham Jr. Which is saying a lot for OBJ13. Met him after the Outback bowl this year. He was cool as hell to the fans. Extremely humble. So I have a pretty big bias towards him.

OBJ - ( New Window )
Per nflcombineresults.com ...
Gussi41 : 10/1/2014 11:17 pm : link
Dee Milliner - 4.37
Devin Hester - 4.41

Comparing Harvin's number to ODB's (that's what I'm going with) is pointless.

too be fair to ObJ , his negatives in that scouting report are balls he got mugged by the defenders , holding down one of his arms . And the others were terrible throws by his QB. Kinda makes me think he's even better , cause if that's his worst , we are gonna be just fine !
Having seen a good bit of Harvin over
BlueLou : 10/2/2014 3:03 am : link
the years and as much LSU tape on Beckham as I could find, Beckham is IMO not nearly so field fast as Harvin. He's not gonna blow by NFL defenders like they are stuck in mud like Harvin can.
Also agree he's a better pure
BlueLou : 10/2/2014 3:11 am : link
WR. Super hands, good understanding of the position for a rookie. I don't expect much from him for a few real games yet, however. He's missed way too much practice reps.

We have to wait until his play to compare his measurables to other players?

Good point - you want us to cancel the combine while we're at it? I mean, why bother?

all this micro slicing of numbers
Peter from CT : 10/2/2014 8:22 am : link
Put this in the mix. Odell trained all off-season in a pair of shoes that were used by a bunch of athletes the year before. They banned them the morning of the combine. So he ran his sprints in a pair of shoes he had to borrow from one of the manufacturers.

When I watched him at the combine he pretty much jumped out of the pack with his body control, quickness, soft hands and effortless catching.
again.. lets not get ahead of ourselves....

I've watched every Bucs game
Big Rick in FL : 10/2/2014 9:31 am : link
And was a huge fan of Evans before the draft. He has not been impressive at all. He looks slow and can't separate from the DB. I wanted the Giants to trade up for him. As of right now I'm very glad we didn't. Obviously that could change.
Honestly
BSIMatt : 10/2/2014 9:54 am : link
none of the rookies outside of Benjamin have really been lighting it up. Watkins has flashed, but he's had inconsistent QB play. Benjamin has really been the one to stand out..as he should, they put all their eggs in that basket and he's been getting 8-10 targets a game. I honestly thought Cooks would be doing more in that New Orleans offense, he's been getting touches..but he's only averaging about 8 yards a catch.
The rookie TE class is really struggling. Including Ebron and Amaro.
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/2/2014 10:07 am : link
Mike Evans may have been heavily overrated. Hard to say because the Bucs QB situation was appalling.

Just watch the games. Harvin's speed is sick, regardless of 40 time. Beckham's speed is good.

I agree Steve Smith Sr seems like the comparison. I hope he turns out as well as Smith Sr. (Without the anger management issues.)

Very excited to see him play. He may be the highest rated rookie receiver we have EVER had on the Giants. Lets all hope for the best here! OBJ, Cruz, RR, and Washington could develop into a very nice group of receivers in the next couple years with LD at TE.

OBJ

With what I'm hearing about his physical abilities as well as
RC02XX : 10/2/2014 2:48 pm : link
his ball skills, I picture him to be more Randall Cobb like (but with even more upside) than Percy Harvin like in our offense.

I'm pretty excited to see what he can do on the field against Atlanta's poor defense.
I think the best comparison has been Greg Jennings
BSIMatt : 10/2/2014 6:42 pm : link
Go watch highlights of Jennings from 2012..maybe it is more because of how they are utilized in comparison to underneath slot heavy guys like Cobb and Harvin who seem more to be hybrid type/RB build/underneath yac threats. I think Beckham can do some of that, but his bread and butter was the intermediate/deeper routes like Bruce and Holt used to run in st. louis.
