My question continues to be, just because he is accused, does not make him guilty. Why not wait until the police at least make a decision to arrest? CJ Spillman - ( New Window )
take action prior to the outcome of a criminal case, and that's fine. But allegation can't be enough, you've gotta have something that identifies it as credible. First and foremost would be law enforcement determining probable cause exists. Absent that, photographs or video or something supporting it (admissions maybe), otherwise wait until law enforcement is ready to move forward. These guys, especially the marginal ones, have a very limited opportunity to make money at this vocation, if you start demanding that a mere accusation, whether or not it is communicated to Ms. Press Conference herself for civil action, be enough to drum someone out of the league the opportunity to ruin someone's life becomes much greater. Patience is not the foremost virtue of the mob, even when its cause is just, but a modicum of patience seems appropriate.
if he's charged the league can and should take action
I agree. If you can just punish someone from being accused, then we're back in the Salem Witch Hunt era. I can destroy somebody by having them accused of something.
You would have thought the whole Duke Lacrosse shitshow
of a terrible crime just for publicity or to have them suspended then a lot of people would be doing it everyday. It's easy to say" what's to stop me from acussing so and so of pedophilia?" Well actions have consequences and if you throw something out there you better be prepared to fend off a libel suit

Kind of how I feel too. If it was so easy we'd see it every day. That's not to say I believe all accusations, but I have a hard time believing something didn't happen when a story of this magnitude ends up coming about.
The only thing I know about this Spillman guy is that he is innocent until proven guilty and he has the full complement of consistutional rights available to him. Because he is the target of a biased sensationalist, I can only hope he is innocent.

If an alleged victim turns out to be lying, is a libel suit really going to fix things? A player may be missing out on a substantial fraction of his lifetime earnings, he is not going to be able to recover that from an average person even if he can convince a judge or a jury he deserves it. I'm the first to point out that on the whole false accusations or "buyer's remorse" constitute a much smaller percentage of rape accusations than the male imagination supposes, but the possibility underlines the importance of waiting for at least some scintilla of corroboration before suspension or release.
Can't even give a kid a ride home now unless someone else is in the car for fear of an accusation. One guy in my community had his life ruined by an accusation that was proved to be false TWO YEARS LATER.
Or maybe Gloria's the one that got nailed.
I am reminded of this too, from time to time.

Not sure anyone deserves Gloria Allred but I get where you're coming from.
