He popped in my mind yesterday while going through my usual Tuesday routine of scouring NFL network, NFL radio , NFL now and Giants.com for my Giants highlights and analysis, I kept coming across former Giant after former Giant all over TV and the web. I realize that Barber must have burn his bridges to the point that no one would hire him. So many Giants have gone on to have plenty of success after retirement. You have Strahan all over TV, Diehl calling games, O’Hara on the NFL Network, Toomer on NFL radio and I even saw David Wilson co-hosting PFT on NBC once. I wonder what happened.
and more likely than not, a mistress.

Wasn't just that. His whole first year on NBC he was an arrogant dick. Brought nothing to the table as a color analyst. Then he left his 8 months pregnant wife(twins) for a younger woman. Not a great story for an on air personality. Is he some criminal, certainly not, but he was extremely unlikable on the air.
Some guys are better thought of before they take off the helmet and start talking for more than a few minutes. Tiki is one of them.
I always thought that was pretty telling too. Typically if you're friends with twins, or even one of a pair of twins, you can tell them apart pretty easily. It says something (in my opinion) that Strahan didn't recognize him immediately.

For a couple of dopey comments. He was a great player for this team. One of the top offensive players in Giants history and nobody had issue until he said what? That Eli lacked leadership? Might have been a valid point at the time.

It isn't just Giants fans, all though that is what gets all the attention.
Also, I never understood why Giants fans get so wrapped up in his personal life, who cares? I'm sure there is a lot more of that going on with current and former players then we realize and none of us truely know what was going on behind closed doors.

JO, I think the stuff about his ex just didn't help what was already a damaged image. And sadly there a hundreds of horrible reality shows that the public watches, focusing on famous(or supposedly famous) people's personal lives Obviously some people like to get all wrapped up others issues. It shouldn't matter much but its become a staple of the current culture.
But back to Tiki, I always thought there had to be more to the story of why he'd leave his then wife just before she was due to give birth.
He still had plenty left to play and was not injured. He openly admitted resenting Eli because he felt the team was starting over with him and had no chance at a championship in the near future, or Tiki's near future.
He was selfish and then threw current NYG's under the bus
A lot of Giant fans did not like that..
And what I never hear anybody mention, is that if Tiki doesn't blow up and set the team's single-game rushing record in his last regular season game (against Washington), we probably lose the game and miss the playoffs. Coughlin likely gets fired, which means we very likely don't win the Super Bowl the following year.
And he was selfish? He was a 31 year-old small RB who was tired of taking a pounding after 5 years of being the entire Giants offense. He obviously was financially secure, I'd love to see how "selfless" you would be in his shoes.
And to be clear this was his exact wording:
"His personality hasn't been so that he can step up, make a strong statement and have people believe that it's coming from his heart," Barber said on the show.
"He didn't feel like his voice was going to be strong enough and it showed," Barber said. "Sometimes it was almost comical the way that he would say things."
Would you say those things on national TV about a co worker or "friend"? Call into question their ability to do their job?
His comments were personal.
That pissed me off far more than rather dumb comments.

Suppose you were the friend he spoke of - would you consider hating the guy, seven years later, even after you've so unquestionably proven the guy wrong?
Now, consider the fact that you're neither his co-worker, nor his friend.
That pissed me off far more than rather dumb comments.
Well to him, it was just another job and a step stone to something "bigger"
Tiki bashed the Giants and the Giant fans turned on him. He'll someday be in their good graces again but it wont happen until Eli and Tom are no longer active on Sunday afternoons for the Giants.
I'm good with that.

Tiki Barber never "bashed" the Giants.
You can be critical of the team without obviously taking aim. Toomer and Banks can be real pointed and do it often.
His comments were probably very true, and probably shared by a lot of other players, but we've all come to love Eli even if he is a bit awkward.
He should not have said what he said publicly, but let's not pretend what he said isn't at least partially true.
I'm not saying Eli isn't a great leader, I think he is, but he can be very funny even when he's trying to be serious.
Tiki's delivery is weak. IMO, he doesn't appeal to anybody on radio just as he didn't appeal to anybody on TV. He's boring, very general, not emotional, not funny, never teaches or educates about the game from like a Pat Kirwin, etc.
Catergorizing his attempts to take a leadership role as'comical' is not 'tepid'. There's nothing lukewarm about that. That's a shot. You're way off.

One of my favorite games ever. Talk about carrying a team on your back. Not to mention, probably one of the greatest performances ever in a professionals final game.
Tell 'em Sam sent you, and he'll have no idea who I am.
Then he proceeded to make a series of poor judgments with his mouth, showed the world he wasn't all that good behind the camera and screwed up his personal life to boot.
Oh, and he missed out on a fabulous, albeit unlikely, Superbowl run. This piece was unfortunate because he was a great player for us.
Oh well...life takes some strange turns.
And as for retirement, these guys don't owe us a fucking thing. He didn't want to be staggering around punch drunk at age 40, that is a pretty respectable sentiment. He is an educated man, even if he is down on his luck now he still has options.
And would they have won had he stayed? How would he have behaved when they were 0-2? Would he have bought in, or would he have been griping to the press after the Vikings loss, or the Redskins loss when they through it 52 times in gale force winds? I think he would have sabotaged TCs attempt to reinvent himself.
