whats the story with Corey Washington?

fishmike : 10/14/2014 11:40 am
I know he's big and young and played very well in the preseason. I dont watch those games because the only thing I really care about is guys not getting hurt so I dont bother.

Im not sure Ive seen him out there once yet though and he had 4-5 TDs in the preseason.

Think he gets any burn? He's got the size...

Thoughts?

CW's route set and overall skillset are very raw. He's not shown anything in the short or intermediate routes where his size and length are less helpful than downfield on the boundary out of traffic. These make it difficult to put him in with confidence in a timing-based offense. Low expectations.
Came into the league as a project

even if the 4 TD's

(or however many it was) in the pre-season were against scrubs, it showed something that he was able to pull down game winning TD's against guys fighting for their NFL life.

Unfortunatley, that "something" is not nearly enough to get him on the field with any regularity. He's gotta show it in practice, and apparently, he hasn't.
OK...I understand raw and all...but this is the NFL...He is an NFL

player....We have these #4 and 5 receivers that year after year in the Coughlin regime never get a freaking chance. Moss, Jernigan, Barden, etc.

I was screaming for Washington in Sunday Night's game. We weren't getting open with the guys we had....so bring out the 6'4" receiver and try to make a play or two....Do something.....but if you are a 4th or 5th receiver on the Giants, you might as well be a fan in the stands.

Makes me CRAZY!
With Cruz down, Washington probably returns to the goal line package.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/14/2014 11:55 am : link
He's still only the fourth receiver, and he can't play Cruz's position, so we won't see much of him. If Randle or Beckham gets hurt, and the Giants don't make a move for a veteran, Washington will have to grow up in a hurry.
I understand the do something sentiment from a fan
JonC : 10/14/2014 12:12 pm : link
but you must factor in the likelihood of said player making a mistake(s), given he's not played wideout in a regular season game. Coaches tend to be conservative in such spots, and given CW's deficiencies in this system, it's difficult to lay blame for not inserting him.

Do something doesn't always mean a net positive, in a game where one mistake could decide the outcome.
What to root for is
JonC : 10/14/2014 12:16 pm : link
for OB to continue to grow and show signs he's ready for an expanded role, much more likely to occur than seeing CW on the field running terrible routes and getting smacked in traffic.

Never throws to him....1 time in end zone. ..
eli tries to pick his favs...
once he makes a play he will get some passes.
Yeah, but CW should starting getting
Jimmy Googs : 10/14/2014 12:29 pm : link
some reps fairly soon, particularly if the Giants lose to Dallas and fall another game behind the leaders.

He'll also likely get more practice reps with the injuries and will have the bye week as well to help get some extra work in.

He may be raw, but lets see if the young man can bring something to the table.

At the very least, Eli tends to miss high when he gets flustered, so he's got that going for him...

when I offered my opinion of him I was attacked and called pathetic.
The coaches see what he brings every day in practice
JonC : 10/14/2014 12:36 pm : link
TC's comments suggest to me CW's got a healthy amount of work ahead of him before seeing game reps.

By people who are an authority on the unknown talent of NFL players and are able to determine how pathetic you are based on the post? Who might have that been?

a lot of people. I may have been slightly over the top with my conclusion about what exactly Corey Washington will become in the NFL.

I said he reminds me of Ramses Barden 2.0.

Why? because he's tall, has good hands, is raw, a project from a lesser college, and is thought of as a red zone target, but has shown in games he cannot get separation.

But, for that I was attacked and agreed it could be premature and Washington could fare better than Barden, but I see similarities in their attractive attributes.

errrr...seems perfectly reasonable to me...how odd that someone had a differing opinion and reverted to name calling.

You'd think somebody might say "Hey pjcas.....I get why you are saying this, but here's what I think"....
I thought Barden's problem was he was always hurt

and wasnt good enough to overcome all the nagging injuries.

I have no measure for Corey Washington as I havent seen him play. Just looking for folks opinions.

God I hope we can upset Dallas.

remember cruz was raw undrafted player
he showed flashes in preseason
and then they sat him for an entire year

He couldn't get off the LOS. I watched him live and on way too many occasions, the ball was snapped, the QB made his read and delivered the ball to a receiver. Meanwhile, Barden was still battling to get a few yards downfield. He couldn't get off the LOS too often.
Think he has to

be considered now without Cruz. We need WRs who can get separation or make catches in traffic as well as get off the line of scrimmage (like Plaxico did). He has shown some of that ability. Our remaining WRs with the possible exception of Beckham are questionable in that regard. Thtat is if ELI gets any time to find them with his protection breaking down.
He was active last few games...
Simms11 : 10/14/2014 1:09 pm : link
I'm sure they have certain packages to take advantage of his skills and height. Definitely a work in progress. If I remember correctly, he was having problems getting separation.
The best place for him to make an impact
BigBlueinChicago : 10/14/2014 1:09 pm : link
is on special teams.

There are definitely plenty of spots available on that unit for someone to step in and turn things around.

Washington should be looking to do his best work there.
Talley will get a shot before Washington
BillT : 10/14/2014 1:31 pm : link
They need guys who know what's going on. Washington is a developmental guy. His time is next year.

The Giants are one more WR injury away from placing a call to Ramses Barden 1.0.

What about using Donnell in the slot?

Or Robinson? Might as well find out if he can play already.

Our base offense this year has been 3 WR with 1 TE and 1 RB. If we are going to continue with that, I think we can expect to see Randle and Beckham wide with Parker in the slot. Washington should be a backup at SE and Talley the backup at FL.

Another option would be to use more 2 TE sets, keeping Beckham and Randle at WR and using either Fells or Robinson as the extra TE along with Donnell.
best case scenario for Washungton
bc4life : 10/14/2014 3:22 pm : link
Randle, ODB, TEs, are successful enough to start warranting serious attention. Given those other distractions Washington could start taking some baby steps into the league. Unrealistic, IMO, to think you can throw him in as one of 1st 3 wrs and he will flourish.
Do we even have 3 WRs

Washington + Nassib was pretty much the main reason we won those preseason games and both are benched.

Let's remember Victor Cruz destroyed in preseason and barely made this team if it were not for the fact that TC knew he wouldn't make it to the practice squad. Washington should be starting ahead of pedestrian Parker.
