NFT: Tech Comps offer free Egg Freezing

FB, Apple and Google are now offering female employees full coverage for this 8-15K procedure. Thoughtful assistance or a message to put off child bearing?
Link - ( New Window )
First job I interviewed with out of college seemed really cool...

a corporate campus with everything you could imagine - dry cleaning/laundry on site, day care, a gym, etc. - presumably, you could spend an entire day there and just go home to sleep.

And then it hit me - you'd spend your entire time at work, and just go home to sleep. I ran like hell away from that company and politely declined a request for a second interview.
It's a healthcare coverage requirement

in many states for infertile or temporary infertile couples regardless of what google or FB do.

the fact they're advertising it, might be self-serving and
maybe even extend beyond those states, but eventually probably be required everywhere the way infertility in this country is rising.

per the article, this is being offered for "non-medical" reasons. That is, women who for whatever reason (lack of partner, professional etc) just want to put off childbearing will get egg freezing as a perq. No insurance would cover such elective treatment.

I'm of a mixed opinion about this. On the pro side, the fact of the matter is that women are putting off child birth into their 30s more than ever. 20% of first births are to women 35 and older. There is a correlation between older parents and increased health problems for the offspring, though I dont know how much they can conclude re causation. If egg freezing would reduce those health problems (no idea), it seems like a plus.

On the other hand, this is basically big tech saying to female employees "dont bother trying to have a family and work here". Im a lawyer, and find the profession pretty unaccommodating to people trying to start a family (especially women and especially people doing highly compensated work like at large defense firms). Cant pin this on GOOG or AAPL, but as a society we should probably try to find a way to rejigger the work-life balance to specifically promote healthy family policies. Also, I note that these tech companies are overwhelmingly male, so the benefit is a bit gimmicky for now (and if it does attract more female employees, there is no guarantee that copays wont go up).

I re-read it and definitely seems different than healthcare reasons.
It's one way of equalizing pay among genders.

Recent studies have found that high profile women (U. Mich law graduates) still earn about 60% of what men do 15 years after starting (both childless women and women with children).

This reduces the chances, before you hire the woman, of them leaving early on.
why don't the

google and tech campus' just offer on site child care etc...

why does a woman have to leave her job after a child birth?

my wife went back to work and doesn't plan on stopping work just because we had a child.

people leaving to take care of child can't be why there are so few women in Tech.... that is just a small reason.

Perhaps you have heard of traditional gender roles
kickerpa16 : 10/15/2014 1:15 pm : link
and what gender may be more likely to not work overtime so that they can be there for children?

Or take off of work to take care of a child?

Of course there are other explanations for a gender gap. Nowhere did I suggest otherwise. But, of course, this has an explicit goal of delaying the fertility decision, which seems to be obvious...
