State of the Giants

Reale01 : 10/15/2014 2:09 pm
So much going on. Hurtful loss and injuries. Wanted to take a step back and assess the roster and our chances moving forward.

QB - (B) Manning is healthy. He was showing some good stuff, but really looked bad vs. Philly. This is a key week for him. Nassib looks OK in his limited time.

RB - (C-B) Down a man but he is returning. Jennings looked good. Vet thin, Giants need him back. Hopefully, Williams and Hillis can do the job until then.

WR - (B) Randall, Beckham, and Parker could be OK. Ogletree is not horrible. Washington is buried - not sure why. Can't afford another injury. A lot riding on OBJ but I think he is up to it.

TE - (B) Pretty healthy and decent contribution. Fells and Donnell are OK and even Robinson has done a little.

OL - (C) Down a man but he is returning. Others are healthy. Good at times bad at times. Schwartz returning should help. It is likely that he will replace the weakest link. This unit could get better.

DL - (B) Healthy. DTs and DTs have been solid if unspectacular. Would like to see more Moore and a little Bromley against passing teams.

LB - (B) was down two now returning to health. Lets see if Beason can string together a couple games. Kennard could be a help. McClain and Williams have been better than average.

CB - (A) Down two but still OK if DRC can play well. DRC and Prince are solid. Pray for health of DRC. Wonder why Hosely gets nod over Bowman. Reserve Fenner showed some potential.

S - (C) Down two (Hill and Taylor) Giants need to find someone to play with Rolle. Demps and Brown have been shakey at best. Is Berle help? Will Demps or Brown improve?

Overall - Giants still have some good players and some guys are coming back that could help. Giants had depth and now are thin. at RB, WR, CB, and S. IMO The Giants can survive what has happened so far, but cannot afford many more injuries if they are going to have a "plus" season. Still have some depth and skill on DL. Return of JS will leave Giants with OK depth on OL.

A win this week would be absolutely HUGE! Unfortunately, I expect us to play well, but lose. Could be the beginning of a downhill slide, or the beginning of a determined charge. Hopefully the Cowboys are reading their clippings.

don't leave out Special Teams. Cost one game and didn't help in 2 others.
You think....

Manning "looked really bad"?

What exactly was he supposed to do, grow wings and fly around to avoid the rush?

I thought he threw the ball really well, when given time, which was hardly ever on that night.

I actually credit Eli for not turning the ball over in such a horrible display by his line.
The sky isn't falling just yet

But, this game will go along way towards revealing the heart of this team.
I will say this much about Eli
Greg from LI : 10/15/2014 2:24 pm : link
He sure as hell can still pass the ball. However, the rush definitely affects him more than it used to. While he was under heavy duress for much of that game, there were at least a few occasions when he seemed to miss open receivers while he still should have had just enough protection to make a play, and that's because he was looking for the pass rush from the snap. I understand why it's happening, but he wasn't always like that.

Greg.....
BillKo : 10/15/2014 2:30 pm : link
I'm trying to recall a play(s) where I thought Eli had time and missed a receiver. The only one I really remember was the first play of the second half, where he threw to Randle and they were not on the same page on a sideline route.

To me, it was either guys not open when he had time (which was extremely, extremely rare on Sunday), or he simply had zero time to make a play.

And of course when there was any positive play, it was usually backed up by a penalty.

Eli has always benefited from playing behind pretty good lines and having time to throw. Sunday was a jail break.

Hosely was the backup Nickelback. Bowman backs up the outside CBs and has played in place of DRC.
This has been an ongoing debate for some time

And I will do my best to chime in.

I still feel like the Giants are a New York team.

Having said that, the games and team is based in New Jersey.

So I think the state of the Giants is both New York and New Jersey IMO.

Pressure up the middle works against Eli cause he is too slow to escape it. Teams know that, and with less than stellar players in the middle of the o-line, its a problem.
I was referring to the roster
Reale01 : 10/15/2014 3:01 pm : link
Thus did not address special teams, which are horrible.

RE Manning:
Manning had several times when he held the ball too long. He started to panic before he needed to a couple times as well. It looked like he lost confidence. He did have time to throw quick slants and outs, but either they were not called, the receivers were covered, or he didn't trust himself to let it go. Personally, think he may have been trying too hard not to turn the ball over.

I get that, but I think the best three corners on the team are Prince, DRC, and Bowman. Like to see all three on the field.
Very hard....
Wonderphil11 : 10/15/2014 3:06 pm : link
to say Eli played poorly in this one. I'm sure there were times he held onto the ball a bit too long but whatever...it's absolutely amazing he didn't turn the ball over 10 times in that disaster of a game. As a matter of fact, an analyst was going over a play where Eli was sacked (I think it may have been Tucker on PFT) due to a pump fake but pointed out that it would have been an interception if he pulled the trigger...I'm sure there were a bunch of plays that went that way.
Bad plan for offense
Reale01 : 10/15/2014 3:08 pm : link
I have seen every Eagle game. They love to blitz up the middle to stop the run on early downs. They have done it all year. They get torched if you pick it up. We were not prepared to pick it up. Walton and Pugh had particularly distressing days. Jerry was also bad. Richburg and Beatty were not too bad.

Also you can't expect a lot of time when they do that and either Eli was holding the ball or nobody was open. very bad day for the men in Blue. Lets all hope for better this week. Very big game.
On what planet does our LB corps earn a B?
BlueLou : 10/15/2014 3:24 pm : link
LT didn't think so on Sunday night, called them "soft and slow."

I'll go with LT's grade of SS.

It's said that with the West Coast Offense
Reese's Pieces : 10/15/2014 3:26 pm : link
the quarterback needs only two seconds to throw the ball.

But I don't think that they've invented the offense yet where the quarterback can be effective with one second to throw.

Exactly. Really good offenses will do this to them...my assessment is the Eagles blitz and keep their fingers crossed.

We aren't there as an offense......let's see how we do in Week 16 versus them.
Eli is good when the O Line is good.

If the O Line can do it vs the Cowboys,

the Giants have a chance to win.

Couple things
#10* : 10/15/2014 4:21 pm : link
If Jennings doesn't play we will get killed. Jennings has been a big reason for those last few wins. Williams is a bruiser and he can't make something out of nothing like Jennings can.

2nd.
Manning does not move well in the pocket. And if he can't get off his first read the ball becomes a hot potato and Manning folds quickly.

3rd.
We need more passes in the flat to our RB's to loosen up the defenses. Eagles constantly had two or three guys open underneath and we had no one to throw to. If Williams can't catch play Cox because this offense is once again predictable if the running game is off and the offense line protection isn't there.

Manning has great pocket awareness. No, he's not going to outrun anybody. But he's very good in the pocket. Of course, when there's 3 defenders rushing him, it looks to be the opposite
Eli still looks shell shocked from 2013
SHO'NUFF : 10/15/2014 5:52 pm : link
His clock is off...He had some plays last week, although rare, where he had some time to throw, but took off scrambling instead and got sacked.
we
blue42 : 10/15/2014 7:45 pm : link
have no pass rush...even in the games we won we did not apply enough pressure. Our Lb's are bad...lets face it.

We were getting good secondary play but even that is eroding.

Toss in the OL and no wide threat at RB........

Sorry Reale01, but you lost me at Eli
Victor in CT : 10/16/2014 6:45 am : link
"really looked bad vs. Philly. This is a key week for him. Nassib looks OK in his limited time."

Yes, because he had so much time to set up in the pocket and just missed all those open plays ;). I don't think he had a clean pocket even 1 time in that game. And stop with Nassib. He came in in garbage time and even he got sacked twice
In what I saw..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/16/2014 6:59 am : link
it looked like eli's clock was fine. He literally had plays where NOBODY was open until pressure forced him down or out. The WR's were jammed all night and couldn't beat it.

Outside of the first two weeks, Eli has looked sharper than ever, even against the Eagles, he minimized the mistakes. He held the ball on a couple of plays too long, but it wasn't his fault - he was waiting for somebody to get free.

That display by the OL has to be one of the worst I've seen as a fan by a giants team. It reminded me of the Bucs in their first few years where teams would jailbreak them constantly.
So, if I asked you
Rocky Thompson : 10/16/2014 7:25 am : link

about the execution of our O line, you'd be in favor of it?

I think this is a Trap game for Dallas
nicky43 : 10/16/2014 9:33 am : link
All I hear here in the Dallas area is how great they are and they came off a giant win. The talking heads are saying the Giants are a bad team and Dallas will destroy us.

Yet back in NJ our team is hurt, down, but not out and surely will be out for blood. This game will dictate our season and I don't think the Giants are going to let it end here. Dallas is going to have a tough time with us.

necessary to consider coaching. Looking at overall record, shutouts, blowouts, key failures, etc, Giant have been very inconsistent, they can rise up, or they can lie down. Such inconsistency shows that the players have it in them for the team to be good, if they plan well and are well directed. This year, they have again been both good and bad. Last week, a big part of the deficit was poor game management which obviously was a result of poor coaching. Williams over right tackle, sweep, pass attempt with sack, kick. Repeat. On defense, let Dallas run around containment, open up middle. O-Line gets day off against a team that pushes through the centre. Special teams, even a blocked kick. The free (He won two Super Bowls.) ride must end if the coaching doesn't pick up.

Reale01 : 10/18/2014 2:52 pm : link
Eli did look bad. Not saying it was his fault. Pressure makes all QBs look bad. Not at all saying Nassib is an answer. Just saying that we look OK at the backup QB position.

Key week for him to put it behind him and not start a trend towards the shell shocked player he was last year.
