Is that people tend to see certain forms of banning as ridiculous but then support banning the stuff they don't like. Usually by claiming that it is not banning and arguing that they are moved by other concerns, such as stopping the spread of smoking or protecting children or showing respect to the flag or avoiding giving offense to a certain group of people.
gives the impression that the opera is banned throughout the country.
what happened is that an opera company had a 2-year sponsorship deal with the Austrlian public health ministry, and agreed they wouldn't stage it during that time.
anyway the opera should be banned for domestic violence (since Carmen is killed by a guy after she dumps him for a bullfighter).
that reviews plays, scripts, TV shows and any other type of media. We can hire a committee of 24 blue-nosed busybodies who know what's best for us better than we do and let them ban anything they don't think we should see.
It wouldn't be censorship because...(?)...um, because its to protect the kids. and the handicapped.
Ira, I was living in Manhattan in the late '70s and had cable access to PBS's radio broadcast series "Live at the Met." Cassette taped a version of Carmen conducted by James Levine featuring Agnes Baltsa, Jose Carreras, Leona Mitchell and Samuel Ramey in the lead roles, and it's probably my single most listened to piece of music of all time except maybe Miles' "Kind of Blue".
It was an iconic performance of Carmen apparently and DG recorded it to vinyl, and remains one of the "standards" by which other ensembles and other performances of Carmen are judged. Baltsa's very spicy "Habanera" linked for your pleasure...
Is it likely to cause someone to smoke? Please.
LOL. Word

Poor Jurgis. He should have worked harder!
Senator Ortolan Finistirre agrees, and he's ready to do something about it.
