NFT: 3-0-0 Sharks @ 3-0-0 Islanders pre-game discussion

Metnut : 10/16/2014 9:46 am
The Islanders are going to be tested over the next two games with a road trip to Pitt to follow tonight's game.

I'll be keeping an eye on the Isles related twitter accounts today to see if Calvin de Haan is going to play. If he is activated then someone needs to go to Bridgeport. I'd suspect that would be Reinart. I also wonder if CdH is activited whether they will pair him with Donovan (who he's been practicing with) or if they'll stick with Strait.

The Islanders have an advantage in team speed over SJ I think but are a little undersized. I'm looking forward to it tonight!
perfect
Fish : 10/16/2014 9:54 am : link
timing for an Islanders game day thread. LOL.

Not sure if you noticed, during the Rangers game, Boychuk turned over the puck then skated towards the Rangers player who got the puck and checked him. I liked how he recognized his error and took it out on the opposing player. What a difference between him and MacDonald.
I'll be there tonight.

lets shoot for a start like they had in 2001

with osgood in goal. winning something like 10 of the first 11
Really hope Reinhart remains with the Isles
marbles : 10/16/2014 10:24 am : link
after deHaan comes back. To completely make the jump serious playoff contender, this team must allow it's best players to skate, regardless of favors, salary, and options.

Reinhart is already better than Strait and Donovan, with a high ceiling he has not even come close to reaching.

Just play Reinhart.

I actually disagree a bit. I think Reinhart would really benefit 25+ AHL minutes a night playing with Pulock. The game just looks too fast for him.

Staple tweeted that Viznivsky skated today so he might be ready to return in a week or two. CdH skating today but no word yet on his status tonight.
enjoy the game
feelflows : 10/16/2014 10:41 am : link
Mike!! Looks like a big crowd for tonight.

Less than 300 tickets left on stubhub for the game tonight. I'm not sure if it's a nightly thing, but before the puck drops everybody lights up their phone.. it's a cool thing. Come charged lol

Marbles.. the Reinhart thing depends on Visnovsky. If it's a straight swap : dehaan for Strait.. well, that's one thing. But it's eventually dehaan/viz for Strait and.. ?? It almost has to be Reinhart.

It's better he's a ice time leader in the AHL than an NHL scratch.
I agree Metnut
feelflows : 10/16/2014 10:42 am : link
I think Reinhart would do fine all season up here, but he's really an odd man out at this point.

Opening night
Fish : 10/16/2014 10:53 am : link
they interviewed Reinharts dad. He said the kid knows the game and is more than prepared. He needs game experience on the NHL level. By the time playoffs roll around the kid would be solid. Makes no sense to send him down.
Reinhart has been bad
KWhite2250 : 10/16/2014 11:02 am : link
Opening night he looked to be ok but the next 2 games he along with strait were absolutely awful. He is extremely slow. He is clearly not ready. Pulock was clearly the better option in camp and preseason but they use the excuse that the injury stopped him from making it. As much as I hate Donovan, I'd like to see him get in there with DeHaan and see how it goes
Cappy
Metnut : 10/16/2014 11:04 am : link
said it's same forwards tonight and a decision will be made close to game time regarding CdH. Even if CdH doesn't play tonight, it looks like he'll be ready to go for Pitt on Sat.

Mike in NY : 10/16/2014 11:05 am : link
Knowing the game and being able to execute are two different things. He knows where he needs to be but he has to get used to the speed difference. Also playing with Strait and/or Donovan is not going to help his development because both are frequently out of position chasing the puck leaving Reinhart hung out to dry. Getting deHaan back will help but every healthy scratch would need to clear waivers to get sent to Bridgeport. Reinhart can go down without waivers. Personally I would not care about losing Boulton because we have enough "tough guys" in the minor if an enforcer was needed, but I do believe someone would claim Donovan if exposed
All well noted
Fish : 10/16/2014 11:22 am : link
yes he did look slow but the game isn't going to slow down for him if in Bridgeport. Regardless I don't want him having a Bailey type career so whatever is best for him.
Having deHaan in the line up is great. You know that feeling you have when Boychuk and Leddy are on the ice and you know that feeling when Strait is on the ice. Well, deHaan is closer to having the Boychuk/ Leddy feeling.
Fish
feelflows : 10/16/2014 11:29 am : link
so what do you propose now that dehaan is back and Viz is already skating.. when Viz comes back:

Leddy/Boychuck
dehaan/hamonic
Hickey/Visnovsky

where does Reinhart play? You want him up here getting experience, but you're banking on someone being injured. Yes, Viz is old but you can't bank on him being hurt.

Donovan is the perfect extra dman.
The speed of the game will slow down
KWhite2250 : 10/16/2014 11:29 am : link
For him in bridgeport. He's gone from playing vs kids straight to playing vs men. Thats a huge jump. Nobody thinks he sucks but he just needs some seasoning vs other men, a step below the NHL
If Reinhart will go to Bridgeport when Viz comes back
marbles : 10/16/2014 11:38 am : link
I will reluctantly be on board. But I do not want to see him go down just to get Donovan in the lineup.

Maybe I am talking gibberish because I do not know how to deal with depth on defense has some depth, which is a welcome
Let's
Metnut : 10/16/2014 11:38 am : link
remember that Reinart played in juniors last year, so he really hasn't had a lot of time to even adjust to AHL speed, much less NHL.

This is why having depth is so important. In previous years, we'd be forced to have Reinart learn on the job because he didn't have any other options. Now, since we have quality depth, we can let Reinart get some more seasoning and bring him up when injuries occur later in the year, or to replace Viz next season.

We're not used to having actual depth! It's a good problem to have!
Oops meant to finish this way:

I probably am talking gibberish because I am so unaccustomed to real depth defensively.

I doubt anybody would disagree with you that Reinhart is a better option than Donovan in the lineup.. but losing Donovan on waivers to get a couple more games of Reinhart before Viz is back is probably not the best move.

Yes it is. I still occasionally pinch myself to make certain I am not dreaming of legitimate NHL roster.

Again, it could just be a simple case of being forgetting what it is like to have real options. I am getting old afterall.

Donovan would clog up bport, too lol

Reinhart
Pulock
Church-Mon
Ness
Pedan
Pelech
Mayfield

Church

That was awesome!

Ness
feelflows : 10/16/2014 12:22 pm : link
is the captain, also got injured last game. leg injury. I haven't seen an update (haven't really looked).

I doubt he's on thin ice because he looked relatively good when he came up last year. Played a very sound game and moved the puck. I don't think he's considered a future blueliner for NYI, but good insurance down at the 'port.

One guy I saw play the first two games that shocked me was Pedan. If he can put his game together, that's a gem. He's very physical, very big, has a massive shot and a serious fist.

He's just nasty.
I didn't realize the depth
JayBinQueens : 10/16/2014 12:23 pm : link
we had on D even in Bridgeport.
I think this season we're going to have an interesting time at the trade deadline
Should be a great test

I chose Ness in the numbers crunch because Pulock, Pedan, Pelech (imagine the entertainment value Butch Goring will give us trying to keep those names straight, but I digress), Reinhart, and Mayfield are locks.

I kept Church because he is younger than Ness.

Butchie came to the tailgate before the home opener to say hi to everyone.. about 3:30pm..

it's easy to bash him (I do) during the broadcast.. but when you see him in person you quickly remember who he was/is, and what he did for this organization. Talk about an important part of a dynasty.

I'd rather play him with Donovan (until CdH is ready to move back into the top 4). A 3rd D pairing of Donovan and CdH would give us a pretty sweet puck moving pair at the back end of the D.

If Fred Flintstone had his way - both
You think pairing deHaan with Hamonic is too much,
marbles : 10/16/2014 1:13 pm : link
too soon?

By the way, I only have a laugh at Goring's expense because of his maloprops. He is an all time Islander, and he was the missing piece to that team. The trade for him in midseason 1980 was a part of Torrey's genuis.

is the right move. He needs to work on his skating. If we are indeed a legit team, we don't have the luxury of letting him "develop" in the NHL.

Put them with Nelson and Nielson or Grabner and Grabovski and it would be one fun line to listen to
It does not just have to be similar names
Mike in NY : 10/16/2014 2:37 pm : link
Howie & Butch keep messing up Grabovski, Kulemin & Conacher because they have similar numbers (84, 86 and 89 respectively)

But then again the D was so bad it was hard to point the finger at one guy. It seemed like he was solid in the lockout season and the beginning of last season. Didn't he get injured or something and his been horrid since. He does grow a nice beard however.
go Isles!
clint : 10/16/2014 3:39 pm : link
definitely excited about them since it's been so long since they've been good. So nice to see tavares come back strong from the injury. went to the caps-aharks game. definitely SJ starts fast so have to watch out for that; but definitely Niemi is no Quick so he can be taken advantage of; and don't think their D is that great, so we have a chance to make an early season statement and win this one. meanwhile, I'm going to the caps-devils game tnite - go NJ!
great
