NFT: OS X Yosemite being released today

MookGiants : 10/16/2014 1:42 pm
I'll download it later when its available. iOS 8.1 will be available for download on Monday, and apple pay also will debut on Monday. They are bringing back the camera roll on the photos on Monday which I know annoyed a few of us on here when they took it away in iOS 8
Anyone with Verizon

far are you away from your upgrade date, Jon?

for the new OS for Mac's whats the oldest model Mac that will support it?

Glad they're bringing camera roll back. Getting rid of it made less than 0 sense.

My upgrade is November 4th.. do you think they'd just give it to me early if I went in there now and traded in my iPhone 5? Or should I just wait the 3 weeks or whatever it is. I know it's soon anyway.. but if I could just get it now, I'd rather.

If you're with verizon you should be able to. They said anyone with an upgrade date of November 15th or earlier would be able to upgrade early
.
arcarsenal : 10/16/2014 2:04 pm : link
Yeah, I have Verizon. I'm gonna stop in after work.. hopefully they just let me do it early. I don't see why they wouldn't.

you checked your upgrade date on my verizon recently? It should show you are eligible now

As a special thank you to our existing customers, all Verizon customers who would be eligible to upgrade on or before November 15th have had their upgrade dates changed to become upgrade eligible immediately. These customers can now upgrade to any device currently in our lineup, with new two year contract. Customers should check My Verizon to confirm upgrade eligibility.

the retina macbook air would come today even though it was very unlikely, oh well. The macbook air is the best laptop ive ever owned, getting one with a retina display will be the tits.

arcarsenal : 10/16/2014 2:15 pm : link
Mook, I actually haven't checked since the 6 was announced so I was totally unaware of that. Thanks.
I doubt you will see a Retina MBA
Jim in Scranton : 10/16/2014 2:20 pm : link
until Intel's Broadwell chip is released. Would be nice though and I would like to see a 15" in the Air.
I doubt
MookGiants : 10/16/2014 2:28 pm : link
we will see 15" in the air but I'd buy it in a second.

The rumors are it will be 12" Retina MBA. I have 13" now but would give up an inch for the retina.

When are broadwell chips supposed to come out?
Ten more months, Mook

I just might bite the bullet. After having a Note 3 at my last job, I want a 5.5" phone ... Note or 6 Plus, tbd.
I paid full price
MookGiants : 10/16/2014 2:48 pm : link
for mine and sold my 5s for like 400. So basically 500 out of pocket for the 64gb plus. I switched to verizon last year so had to get the 5s, but I want to get on the non-s schedule, so next time ill upgrade will be for the 7
My MacBook Pro
Sammo284 : 10/16/2014 3:28 pm : link
Went dead after just under four years. Went with an HP laptop instead. Better specs at half the price.

For all the criticism of Windows I always had problems with OSX updates and glitches.

I'll keep using an IPhone and IPad but for laptops I'll never go back. Too
Heh. I was just in the Apple Store an hour ago with my sick MacBook.
vibe4giants : 10/16/2014 3:52 pm : link
I asked the dude if he had any idea when Yosemite was coming out. He did not.

Broadwell has been pushed back til the first half of next year, but Intel is also releasing their next generation architecture, Skyline in the second half of next year. I don't know if Apple will wait til Skyline, kind of hope they do. Supposedly the Skyline architecture will be one biggest advancements in the last decade.

lol I'm the reverse

I got my Macbook in 2008 and am trying to string as much time out of it as I possibly can.

But, I've only ever had Android phones and am on the fence about getting the iPhone now that I can upgrade.
Can I upgrade directly from OS X Lion

for iphone 6s and that covered the upgrade costs. I'm not sure if they're still doing that, but it was a good deal.

Looking forward to Apple Pay - I've missed nfc payments from Android.
Both stores I went to had no 6's in stock.
arcarsenal : 10/16/2014 7:18 pm : link
Had to order it and it'll be about a week. OH WELL.
You would have had it launch day

Check this out. Tells you what's in stock at every Apple Store

Fuckin nonsense.
arcarsenal : 10/16/2014 7:31 pm : link
These phones came out like a month ago, how do Verizon stores not have them in stock by now. The girl tried telling me it won't ship until November 7th but the other guy told me they ship out before that and will probably go out early next week and be at the store by the end of the week.

They had the plus I think but that shit is too big. I already have an iPad mini.
And Yosemite is going to take forever to download.
arcarsenal : 10/16/2014 7:32 pm : link
13 hours? Get outta here.
You can have apple mail you and iPhone
Phil in LA : 10/16/2014 7:55 pm : link
or go to an apple store, even if you're a Verizon customer.

You guys must have slow internet. I downloaded it at about 730 and it only took 20 minutes
Yeah I don't know why I didn't think of that.
arcarsenal : 10/16/2014 8:19 pm : link
I'll just cancel the order tomorrow and order it straight through Apple, it'll probably be faster.
13 hours??

My says 22 min.
It says 2 days now.

I have no idea what the problem is. My downloads are usually not slow at all.

I started downloading the Yosemite around 6 pm and it finished around 11.

Its a huge download, over 6 gigs, and everyone is trying to do it at the same time, so the slow download is to be expected.

I think you need to be logged into iCloud and both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
It only took me about 15 minutes
buford : 10/17/2014 10:16 am : link
to download this morning. I installed it, but I haven't had a chance to play with it yet.
I downloaded it. The differences are clear
Anakim : 10/17/2014 5:39 pm : link
But it also made my computer a bit slower.

Anyone else get a message that you need to download Java when you turn on the computer? When I try to do that, it completely freezes my computer.
Well,
Giantology : 10/17/2014 7:05 pm : link
I'm annoyed with it a bit. I do front end development on my laptop and already having software issues with it...

Aside from that, I like it :)
Downloaded this morning, just got home and installed it.
glowrider : 10/17/2014 7:54 pm : link
It's so bright and "fun" looking.

Immediate impressions, right off the bat.

The battery/power menu shows "apps" by usage in terms consumers can relate to - it started in mobile on Android (and now ios) - without going into activity monitor and relating my actual usage into time, and continuing to sell "App" on the desktop.. Convenient (gonna be a theme here...)

Ive always used a launcher, latest is Alfred. Spotlight just ate the company. The user interaction of clicking the spotlight icon, and getting the search area in the middle of the screen (and not movable), is clearly aimed at those users, but it's a poor implementation. But, you have to get the masses used to it. The icon will be phased out I'm sure.

Good choice having the notifications panel be a fly out menu rather than shifting the whole desktop over. And it's more useful with widgets or extensions or whatever. More mobile features coming to desktop.

Safari is interesting. I like the new Favorites layout on new windows/tabs. Don't know about you but I have a ton of well indexed bookmarks I never actually revisit. also you can finally see your tabs visually grouped together in an overview. Also easy to see the tabs on my other devices and network.

Handoff good. Using phone sms etc on computer was sorely needed. Don't like the Bluetooth nature of it though.

Icon changes are poppy and clean. Little goofy looking, but more making the computer approachable to mobile first kids/people.

Despite that I'll be spending my time on a windows server in jump desktop.

They are definitely moving in a certain direction.
Oh, full screen mode moving to the right circle (green)
glowrider : 10/17/2014 8:02 pm : link
a lot of people are going to be closing windows by accident if they don't know to hit that green button again. the icon changes when you overlay the pointer. had read about that, sharing the heads up
interesting
giantfanboy : 10/18/2014 6:19 am : link
it is slightly slower in general
(if you restart your computer it gets a little faster )

one nice thing it seems the lower on my computer is much louder
Thanks for the tip
buford : 10/18/2014 7:24 am : link
about the green dot.
I like it so far.
arcarsenal : 10/18/2014 1:38 pm : link
Haven't noticed any slow down, either.
I'm becoming infuriated by Handoff
glowrider : 10/18/2014 2:16 pm : link
It does not work consistently or at all at times. What is a top 5 feature is sorely lacking for me at the moment.

Weak sauce. Weak sauce.
I had a bunch
MookGiants : 10/18/2014 2:19 pm : link
of issues with it at first but after logging out of icloud on both my computer and iphone it works pretty damn well now, not perfect but a ton better than it did
anyone having any issues with various

websites? Not sure what the cause but say you're scrolling down a retail website that shows 20 items, the next 20 are supposed to load when you hit the bottom (brooks brothers' site as an example), it just sits there waiting and never loads

I tried this and it seems to be working with my iPad. To use Mail, however, I have to use the Apple client, but I use webmail on the desktop. Very tempting to go back to the Mail client for that alone. Will wait and see.

It's sporadic between my iPhone and iPad. and iPhone not going to laptop. I don't know if multiple devices are there yet, but it's a good start. Thanks for the tip.
I had to download Java again
Phil in LA : 10/18/2014 11:18 pm : link

iOS 8.1

just released, I'm taking the chance that there arent any major issues and downloading it now, I want the sms relay
and of course
MookGiants : 10/20/2014 2:03 pm : link
I can't get the sms relay to work because for some reason the verification code it is supposed to send to my mac is not coming through.
I need to downgrade back to Maverick
Anakim : 10/20/2014 8:33 pm : link
My exam software won't support Yosemite.

Anyone know if it's a complicated thing to go back to Maverick? Will I lose any documents? Better to go to the Apple Store and get a genius to do it?

easy peasy.
Yosemite jacked up my wifi
jgambrosio : 10/20/2014 9:20 pm : link
if I stop using it for a few seconds, it loses connection. No other device, whether ipad, iPhone or laptop in my house has this problem. Really f'ing annoying.

what it means
giantfanboy : 10/20/2014 11:28 pm : link
iphone 6 has NFC
and apple combine this with the touch ID
to create Apple Pay

you set up your credit card in your iphone and use your phone to pay at various retail and restaurants by touching the NFC pad in store and pressing your home button on your iphone
I don't have an iPhone though
Anakim : 10/20/2014 11:46 pm : link
I mean my MacBook Pro. I need it to go back to Mavericks from Yosemite, but A) I don't know how and B) I don't want to lose any of my files.
