NFT: Islanders - Sharks 7pm Game Thread

pganut : 10/16/2014 5:45 pm
Must say you guys did a good job carrying the thread through the day..amazing what some good play and optimism brings out.

Not much for me to do since you are aware of the moves from today, so your goaltender tonight is Jaro Halak. Forwards are:

89 Cory Conacher 91 John Tavares 21 Kyle Okposo
84 Mikhail Grabovski 29 Brock Nelson 18 Ryan Strome
12 Josh Bailey 51 Frans Nielsen 86 Nikolay Kulemin
17 Matt Martin 53 Casey Cizikas 15 Cal Clutterbuck

Defense yet to be confirmed, but likely Boychuk-Leddy, Hamonic-Hickey (the coaching staff has noted they like this combo) and CDH-TBD. As noted, he's been practicing with Donovan, so it's possible we see that with Strait as your extra.

Isles will have some pink stick tape tonight, and if Twitter pics of practice today are any indicator, we will see the first appearance of our 3rd jersey (Stadium Series) in tonight's tilt.

And since tim brought you our gameday Rush lyrics earlier, I won't tempt fate by posting others. As for first Isles' goal tonight...Strome.

lol just finished watching it.

Okposo was possessed tonight!!! Halak looks shaky, though.

de Haan didn't miss a beat, huh? And how about my boy Bailey?????
I'm OK with McDonald coming in
feelflows : 10/16/2014 10:15 pm : link
move Clutterbuck to the 3rd line, and put Colin on the 4th until Grabovski is ready.

Where is Marty Reasoner playing? ;)
I dont think Strome

Is the real deal.
Ugh, CMac
pganut : 10/16/2014 10:33 pm : link
Sure hope we don't regret that, especially if last year's L4 reunites. Perhaps CMac will realize he's going to fade away as guys get healthy and this lights a fire under his ass. But that also means he needs to show an improvement in skills, which I feel is unlikely. But until Grabner returns and any delay with Grabovski, we will need him in some way. Seize the opportunity.

I disagree on Strome. He has attacked his forechecks so far and directly created one goal (behind the net one-touch dish to Grabbo, Carolina) and pressured a lot of others. His passing has been good. I think that the knock is he hasn't scored yet. He will. Even Howie noted his confidence.
do you know who's
feelflows : 10/16/2014 10:36 pm : link
been in front of the net, well positioned, shooting the puck and having great vision?

Joshua Bailey
No argument
pganut : 10/16/2014 10:44 pm : link
Y'shua has played good hockey. It would be outstanding if he produces the year we've all hoped he would. And on a side note, Kulemin plays hard. Never quits, always trying to make a play.
i like strome.
Fish : 10/16/2014 10:58 pm : link
Bailey is better. Okposo said he loves playing with these guys. Best team he has been on.
Another one in the books
Patrick : 10/16/2014 11:14 pm : link
Hate the shootout but don't mind the extra point.

Just got back from the game.

Kills me to lose this great old barn the way it was rocking tonight but at least they're staying local. I hope Brooklyn comes close to the same atmosphere.

Halak needs to be better, not that he's been bad but when and if he tightens shit up this team will be legit. Especially so when Viz replaces Strait.

Hope Grabovski is not out too long.

Fuck Kate Murray.

fun game to watch tonight. Big 2 points to earn against a good opponent. None of the goals were really bad but I thought Halak should've stopped at least one of em. The 4th line looked a lot better and I was glad to see Bailey bury one because he'd been playing well so far.

Totally disagree about Strome
Eric on Li : 10/17/2014 12:56 am : link
He clearly hasn't gotten the confidence to showcase his offensive skills yet, but when he is on the ice he has been consistently making things happen. Reminds me a lot of Nelson last year, where there weren't big numbers but he was consistently making good plays on the forecheck, disrupting plays and helping generate opportunities. Once he starts relaxing when he has the puck and letting his ability take over he's going to break out in a big way.

Agree about everything else though - this team is for real. Even with some injuries and without everything clicking on all cylinders they are really taking it to some pretty good opponents. The power play looks lethal. Hard to imagine what this team is going to be capable of when Visnovsky/Grabner come back or when Halak gets on a hot streak.

good question
feelflows : 10/17/2014 7:50 am : link
Regarding Grabner.

Where is he going? 3rd line???
If Grabo
Metnut : 10/17/2014 8:02 am : link
is only out for a game or two then i think we'll see CMac but anything longer than that and Lee should be called up to take his spot. IMO, we're simply a worse team having CMac out there as opposed to Lee.
Funny
pganut : 10/17/2014 8:07 am : link
Regarding Grabner, I thought it would be an easy call to automatically insert him to L3 and bump Bailey to LW on L4 with Martin sitting. That still may be what happens, but Bailey's play is making that a difficult choice.

What will make things interesting is the health of Grabovski and if he'll miss any time. Staple reporting no concussion, but an upper body injury. I looked at that hit many times, and I think that there could be a shoulder or collarbone involved given how hard Grabbo hit the ice.

full, it was rockin' all night long. Sharks are a big and fast team, so that was one sweet win by our Isles. Even though we out-shot them by a wide margin, I can't remember a single faceoff win in the 3d period or OT. And while J.T. has not been the best in shoot-outs, that move he pulled outlast night was just incredible! 4-0-0 baby!!!
2 Points
Giant Mike : 10/17/2014 8:36 am : link
against a really good (regular season) team. Sharks first 2 goals were a little flukey.

- Tavares face down on the ice after a puck to the foot and Burns gets an uncontested slap shot (which he placed beautifully, granted).

- Cizikas breaks his stick on the face off and is unable to contest the D-D pass that set up Marleau.

Neither of those is a likely goal without those bits of good fortune. I think Halak is fine.

I like Leddy's game. The crowd has been great.

feelflows : 10/17/2014 9:32 am : link
Looks like a fun time and great crowd. I hope that keeps up!!!!!

I figured grabovski was a rib or wind when he skated to the tunnel bent over. I can't tell from the hit. Solid clean hit, by the way.

Bailey is not a 4th liner, dammit. Either he's a good 3rd liner or they need to get rid of him. He adds nothing to the energy line.
nice

so I was unable to chime in duirng the game. So everything I am going to say has been repeated but here it goes anyway.

Fun game to watch. The Hertl goal sure looked offsides, but in the end it didn't matter. Last year, after a delating goal like that, you just knew another goal (or two) for San Jose' was coming.

But the guys just worked through it and managed to end up with all that mattered, the two points. There The amazing thiung is how quickly the team has jelled. They really like playing for one another.

And you can tell immediately by Boychuk's quotes, he has taken on a leadership role. He always talks up the talent and work ethic. Meanwhile, Leddys offensive game was not exaggerrated. He is the goods. He just felll on the tying goal. Bad luck there.

Strome had an uneven game, but he has been part of the second line that has been so good, I will let him slide.

The Taveras SO goal was a beauty.

They are what their record says it is. Pile up as many points as possible, to cushion the many bumps along the way. However, the team appears is better equipped to deal with losing streaks now.

On to Pittsburgh.

Wasn't able to catch the game
JayBinQueens : 10/17/2014 10:59 am : link
from the box score though it looks as though it was a frustrating game based on the shot totals.
Did the SJ goalie stand on his head or were there a lot of shots at his chest?

Either way, 4-0-0 is still 8 points.
As marbles said, let's keep adding them up and hope we avoid the double digit losing streak.

It's been a long time since we have had to worry about who to take out of the lineup when a player comes back from injury. This may sound crazy, but based on how everyone's been playing and their roles, do you think Strome may be sent down when Grabner comes back?
Jay
feelflows : 10/17/2014 11:05 am : link
their goalie had an outstanding game.

need to pile on wins now because....NOVEMBER IS TWO WEEKS AWAY!! gulp
Zero chance Strome gets sent down
pganut : 10/17/2014 11:16 am : link
He is here to stay. CMac will likely stay, with a choice of what to do with Martin and Boulton looming.

I have to say that I also like this new feisty JT.
I don't know if you guys are aware of
Mike in Long Beach : 10/17/2014 11:19 am : link
on Youtube...

But he posts LENGTHY highlights from every game. I hope he doesn't get taken down any time soon. He put together a 20 minute highlight reel of last night's game. I'm gonna throw it on when I work out later and hear Howie's calls since I was in attendance.

Bailey has played too good to be demoted to 4th
Dave M : 10/17/2014 12:27 pm : link
And he frans, and Kulemin actually seem to be a solid 3rd line. Not for biting Grabner has not performed offensively either. He is a great pk guy so the 4th line isn't necessarily an insult to him. If the Kings showed us one thing it's that 4 good lines are hard to beat. The 4th line has been good as well so it's tough to scratch one of them. I guess there is still 4 weeks to let it sort out.

Not for *nothing
Grabovski "out indefinitely"
pganut : 10/17/2014 2:48 pm : link
And did not make the trip to PIT. Staple opines that lines will look like 89-91-21, 12-29-18, 86-51-15, 17-53-13. No further word on the injury.
i like those
Fish : 10/17/2014 3:01 pm : link
New Second and third lines.

Also, if you can catch okposo interview in the studio after the game, he is very passionate about this team. They all love it. Okposo has been playing here for 7 years already. Jeez.
Did not see the game last night
The 12th Man : 10/17/2014 3:28 pm : link
I saw the highlights and it seemed as if the Isles took it to them the whole game. It looked like their goalie pulled a Halak and got them a point. Only Eastern Conference undefeated team. We play Sally Crosby tomorrow night, hope they keep this roll going.
By the way did anyone

see the ESPN story on Hamonic? About losing his father at age 10 age what he does at each home game? Have to admit had the tissues out. Love Hamonic even more after watching the clip.

Happy for him that a bit of the stoic Canadian farmboy gets put aside when he speaks to the kids; very cathartic for him. Such a humble guy. The story goes that a friend of his wanted to get this story on E:60 and Travis really didn't want to do it. The friend arranged a meeting with Jeremy Schaap so he could convince Travis in person he'd do a thoughtful piece on this. I watched it when it ran the other night, but DVR'd it for my sons. It really hit home for them because they're (about) 10, and I am 44, the same age as when Travis lost his father. It was nice to get some unsolicited big hugs from my boys today after they'd watched it this morning. Hard not to root for #3.

On a game-related note...you guys will need to post the game thread (feels, tim, Dave, feel free to take the reins)...I get to go on a cub scout camporee tomorrow...just when the weather here is first dropping into the 30s overnight. But, it's quality time with my little dudes, so no real complaints.

And one last gift below...
