NFT: Driving thru DC

A little help, please.

We are driving south from Central NJ to Florida 5:30 Monday morning. We should hit Washington in 4 hours or so. Question: Right before Baltimore should I get off 95 and take 895 to 295 back to 95 or just stay on 95 the whole way? Are there any construction projects to worry about? Would holding back an hour or so to let the DC morning rush make any difference?

Thanks

I would just stay on 95. your other option is what people who are going into the city are doing. you might slow down some on your way to the WW bridge, but once you're there, it should be smooth sailing after that b/c you're driving against traffic.

I think you'll run into more traffic in Baltimore than in DC (though you should always plan on DC traffic).
stay on 95

and tune in to local DC radio stations to see which part of the beltway to take to get past DC. There will always be traffic issues especially on 95 south of the DC beltway so don't plan on making it though quickly.

This. 103.5 WTOP (traffic/weather on the 8s and when it breaks)
Thanks guys

It is appreciated. I will tune in. How about the hour? Will an hour later make an appreciable difference?
Monday is normally an easier commute

Lots of teleworkers on Monday so you should be ok leaving at 5:30. If youre in Central Jersey, even if you stop once I think you will be coming through DC around 3.5 hours. Another plus is there's no rain in the forecast on Monday; rain always makes people into stupid ("stupider") drivers. WTOP gives traffic updates on the 8's, 99.1 gives updates on the 1's.

What time would you hit the DC Beltway?
Best guess

is between 9:15 and 9:30. As usual, it depends on how my wife's bladder is feeling that morning.

I agree with others that you should check WTOP. You may also want to see if it makes more sense to drive West on the Beltway rather than East. I don't know which way is faster (through Maryland or Virginia).

the contrarian here. I almost always take 895 instead of 95 when going through Baltimore. It might be a little longer, but I find that it's nearly always less congested.

My advice (if you have a smart phone) would be to download an app like Waze. They have excellent real-time traffic information and will send you whichever way is faster.

Edison and now live west of B'more. I you leave Central Jersey at 5:30 it will put you over the Del Mem Bridge at around 7:00. Heading southbound on 95 once you get to about Exit 80 in Maryland will become a nightmare. It is generally bumper to bumper from Bel Air (Exit 74) all the way down through the Harbor Tunnel, probably at least an hour. I wouldn't plan on getting through Baltimore until 9:00 - 9:30.From there you should be fine because rush hour will be ending. I would just stay on 95 all the way down. You could take 295 through DC which cuts about 6 miles off of the 495 route but there is a ton of construction right now. Have fun in FLA!
