HUGE Game - Crossroads

Reale01 : 10/17/2014 12:38 pm
Not optimistic after the way the Giants played at Philly. However, there is an opportunity for dramatic redemption this week.

If the Giants win

The Giants would actually be in really good shape going into their bye week at 4 and 3.
The Giants have won 4 of their last 5 with the only loss at Philly
Did anyone really expect they would win both at Philly and at Dallas? Most would have taken a split.
The Giants are 2-1 in the division with three home games left
The Giants would have overcome the loss of Cruz
The Giants have Schwartz and Jennings coming back after the bye with some needed time off for DRC
Giants remaining schedule has 5 home and 4 away
Giants road games include Titans, Jags, and Rams. Yeah Seattle too.
Home games are three division rivals. Indy - getting a dome team outside, and SF who has to fly across country.
Its not unreasonable to think they could finish 6 - 3 with two more division wins. That would leave the Giants 10-6 and 4-2.

If the Giants lose

Very bleak outlook at 3-4
Going into the bye with two straight losses in the division
Three tough games ahead
The Giants are likely to be three games behind both the Cowboys and the Eagles
They would have to finish 7-2 to have any chance at playoffs.
aright

I believe last week

was the key to the 2014 season. So I'm already saddened. :>(

Guys like you are the reason I posted. The Giants will actually be in really good shape at 4-3. There is good reason to approach this game with high energy. I'm not all sunshine either. Last week was tough, but a win at Dallas will make this season pretty interesting.
Probably reasonably accurate
JonC : 10/17/2014 12:47 pm : link
But, to actually factor in the personnel (and injuries), this team has some major issues on the OL, the defense as a whole being a consistent performer, and the passing attack is losing its weapons unless the LSU duo plays big the rest of the season.

My expectations are moderate at best, 8-8 still indicates to me the arrow is pointing up for 2015.

Big game, however,
Simms11 : 10/17/2014 12:48 pm : link
the conference games also are vital. SF beat both Philly and Dallas already. Even if we lose this game, we get both Philly and Dallas still at home and could still potentially split with them. If we can somehow beat SF and Seattle (tall order), we may still have a strong shot at WC. Division title would be tough being 3 games out with 9 to play though.
To win this game,
Simms11 : 10/17/2014 12:53 pm : link
Defense has to absolutely stop the run and keep Romo under wraps. Additionally, oline has to play like it's a playoff game and Williams and Donnell have to play larger roles in this game. If that happens, Beckham should see some opportunity to make plays.
this game is coming at the right time
YorkAveGiant : 10/17/2014 12:53 pm : link
pokes on a high, Giants on a low. in division, where theyve had a lot success, everyone overlooking us now. this is right up TC's alley. big game for Eli, 27-17 Giants.

I am not completely down on the OL, and if we win this week it would mean that the OL bounced back. Schwartz return will only help - even if he is just a reserve. Last week was a bad plan and bad execution. Jennings return would also be a good thing and Williams is likely to improve.

Huge concerns if they drop another turd this week.

The defense has played very well at times. Again, if we win it will likely mean they played well vs. Dallas. Last week, bad scheme, bad execution. They need to be consistant. The return of Kennard and Beason rounding into form would help a lot. DRC is key although I like Bowman.

Dallas defense is playing better football than Philly's
JonC : 10/17/2014 1:03 pm : link
and has more talent that our front doesn't match up well against. I'm not feeling the OL confidence, but do expect a bounceback effort from them. How much they produce based on that remains to be seen.

NYG defense is the big disappointment so far. They've played well in spots against mediocre teams, but have dreadful in other spots when the offense is able to constantly win matchups and dictate to us.
If they lose....
Wonderphil11 : 10/17/2014 1:05 pm : link
in the same fashion as last week....it's hello 2013 all over again I'm afraid.

They desperately need a solid showing in this game even if they lose. If they can pull off the win it'll make things interesting for sure but, it's still hard to see them doing any real damage this year with the injuries and loss of talent. If Randle can finally make that step forward and assert himself it would go a long way to dreaming the impossible dream but I just don't have confidence he can do it on a consistent basis.
Yeah, I'm wary of the performances that resemble 2013
JonC : 10/17/2014 1:13 pm : link
and NYG has had them again 2014. This team appears to have been built with more talent, but the injuries have diluted it and we saw some regression in Philly.
Definitely true - a win pumps instant life back into the season.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/17/2014 1:15 pm : link
The question isn't really whether the Giants are as bad as they looked on Sunday night. That would be almost impossible. The question is how much better they can be, on a sustained basis. I suspect injuries have already pushed this team past the event horizon and that they will gradually spiral into the black hole. It could go a different way, though, if most of the following things go the Giants' way in short order:

1) Beason and Rodgers-Cromartie return to full strength;
2) A pass rush develops from somewhere (JPP+???);
3) The offensive line resumes its previous upward arc, bolstered by Schwartz after the bye;
4) Beckham and Randle emerge as a legitimate 1-2 punch;
5) Parker recaptures the form that made him Tampa's most reliable receiver in 2011;
6) Hosley demonstrates a reason for his presence on an NFL roster;
7) A.Williams matures into a polished, complete back (or Jennings comes back really fast, fully healthy);
8) The punt unit stops sucking;
9) The Cowboys and Eagles cool off, for many possible reasons.

this will be like last night's Jets- Pats game with us giving a good effort but coming up just short.
This has been a roller coaster team for some years now.
vibe4giants : 10/17/2014 1:17 pm : link
Really surprised people would still think one game would prove anything. The Giants, like most of the rest of the NFL, are a week to week proposition. And what happens one week often bears no relationship to what comes next.
The injuries at this time may be the factor now
micky : 10/17/2014 1:18 pm : link
Cruz, DRC (doubtful), Jennings and etc. Just bad timing who they are facing now in the schedule. It's unfortunate but after this rough stretch of games (backside of schedule) may get some W's and hopefully finish out better.

They'd be buried behind two teams in the division. That has a baring.
If they didn't.....
Wonderphil11 : 10/17/2014 1:28 pm : link
have such key players out for the year (Cruz, Thurmond) and other key players that are no doubt going to be week to week with their effectiveness going forward (Beason, DRC...hopefuly not Jennings but who knows) I'd be more confident but those are huge factors and I just don't think they have the depth to overcome that in the end.

And a bearing.
Of course....
Wonderphil11 : 10/17/2014 1:34 pm : link
the flip side is Hosley becomes Webster 2.0, Donnel continues his Boss/Ballard arc, Kennard starts getting time and brings the pain, Randle taps into his inner Toomer and Andre truly becomes a Giant! I suppose stranger things have happened....so here's to positive thinking and more gifs of skeletor melting on the sidelines....:)

It wasn't that long ago when the Giants needed to squeeze into the play-offs the last week of the season.

Beating the Cowboys would obviously be nice and potentially significant. But over the last half decade or so, this point of the season has proven a notoriously insignificant sign post of where the Giants will end up at the end of year.
Giants are a somber
JoefromPa : 10/17/2014 1:50 pm : link
wounded and somewhat desperate team. If they ability is there, which I'm not certain it is, they could be a very tough team this weekend.
2-2
dontboobigblue : 10/17/2014 1:56 pm : link
over the next four gets us to 5-5 with Dallas, @jax, @tenn, wash, @stl, home philly.

The cardinal game will haunt this team all season.

Going Into Last Week's Game
Trainmaster : 10/17/2014 2:17 pm : link
I thought (and others did too) that the Giants needed to go 3-3 over the next 6 games, included 2 wins in division games.

It is still possible, but what would be required is daunting:

Two wins versus Dallas and one win versus Indy, at Seattle or versus SF.

If the Giants can get to 3-3 with a split against Dallas, then two wins would required from versus Indy, at Seattle or versus SF.

I think 2-4 over the 6 game stretch is more likely with at most one divisional win. Playoff chances probably pretty slim.

we had to get one of these divisional games
djm : 10/17/2014 2:19 pm : link
more because of the looming schedule than anything else. If NY is sitting at 3-4 with 4 brutal games ahead...not good.

We are fine if we win sunday. Stranger things have happened.

i'm not picking the Giants.
I hope I'm wrong
bluesince56 : 10/17/2014 2:31 pm : link
but I expect another repeat of last week. Too many times since 2012 they have not responded with a big win after a bad loss.

It would be huge and we'd be in good shape. I don't see it though. Maybe I'll be as surprised at the outcome as I was with with what happened last week. Can a team really go from playing like pure crap then losing a key player to playing over their heads in 1 week? We'll see.
Yes
OC : 10/17/2014 5:41 pm : link
Things are looking down right now but...

Dallas can be had. Hou., StL., had them by the balls & Sea. should have won last week, although give credit where it's due. It's tough walking away with a W from there.
We must win IMO
Reale01 : 10/17/2014 6:58 pm : link
Our backs are to the wall. To be honest, I fully expect that we will play well but lose. That will be the end of any realistic hopes for this year. Down three games to two teams is not promising. HOWEVER, if we could somehow win ... I like our chances for making a run.
I understand that we are all fans and having optimism is a
RDJR : 10/17/2014 7:03 pm : link
great thing. However, off of last weeks' performance and the body of work thus far compared with the season Dallas has put up, what, other than typical fan optimism would lead one to believe that we can win Sunday?

We are not a good team. We weren't last year and we aren't this year. We lost our best WR. We have significant injuries in the secondary. Our LBs stink. Our OL is not good. This, my friends, is reality. We have beaten the Falcons, Texans and Redskins, none of which will make the playoffs.

I don't believe the Cowboys are world beaters, however, please remember how we looked on Sunday night. That was as bad as it has been, even though it has been bad recently. Seven days isn't going to erase the disastrous performance of Sunday night.

I understand this is why they play the games, but I'll be happy if we are somewhat competitive and I'm not miserable by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening.
