NFT: Tx college rejects Nigerian applicant for Ebola

natefit : 10/17/2014 10:20 pm
At least two students from Nigeria who applied to a Texas college were told they wouldn't be admitted because of Ebola.

Kamorudeen Abidogun, a Texas man originally from Nigeria, said he received two letters from Navarro College, a two-year community college with a campus about 58 miles from Dallas. Abidogun has five relatives in Nigeria who were applying to the school and who were using his home in Richmond, Texas, as a U.S. mailing address, he told CNBC.

Yeah, the college's administrative staff seem a bit off

they had every right to bounce the applicants based on their residency status and they went with ebola?
They could have denied for anything

Just because someone has a US mailing address does not mean that they lied about where there are. Indeed, in this case it appears that the school was well aware that the applicants were in Africa -- it is the very basis for the rejection. The letter says the school is "not accepting international students from countries with confirmed Ebola cases", which strongly suggests that the applicants self-identified as being international students from Ebola-ville.

Why does these applicants have to be liars? Why could it be the case that their applications disclosed that they live in Nigeria but all mail can be sent c/o their Texas relative?

That's a good point - I took 'using his mailing address' to infer that something dishonest was going on, but it probably was nothing more than using his US location to receive mail and the school was informed of their residency as well.
