NFT: RIP William J. Ronan, 101, creator of the MTA as we know it

Love him or hate him, he was a major dude, and getting to 101 on top of it was a very full life. A lot of interesting political history of the '60s and '70s in there for those of us who lived it.

He actually died at 68

but through the creative accounting used by the MTA, he made it to 101.
If he could have held out another decade and a half

He could have seen his vision for the 2nd Avenue Subway become reality....

Unelected bureaucrat who had far more influence over people's lives than was warranted.
101?

I swore I hit that age over and over again riding the #1 line from way downtown at my night job during my college years back up to Columbia at 110th and B'way.

That was scary shit back in the mid 70s.
Meanwhile, this pic is from 1968

And it might as well have been taken yesterday. So many cars barely updated in over 45 years.

Yup, totally true, except for the fact that the entire electric fleet of the LIRR was replaced starting in 1999, and over 90% of Metro-North's electric rolling stock was replaced or rebuilt in that timeframe.

Other than that, spot on.
They still use the old cars...
rsmith32 : 10/18/2014 3:31 pm : link
so it's not the entire fleet they replaced
