NFT: Need mattress advice.

AcidTest : 10/18/2014 5:46 pm
I'm looking to buy a new queen mattress and box spring. My budget is up to $600 for both, not including tax, delivery charges, and the charge to take away the old mattress and box spring. I am also buying a new bed frame, which will probably add $150 - $200.

I'm looking primarily at some Serta and Sealy brands in my range. I prefer a mattress on the firm side. I sleep mostly on my stomach, and a store spokesperson said firm mattresses tend to be better for stomach sleepers. Can anyone make any recommendations? Also, is it better to buy from a store like Sleepy's or Mattress Warehouse, or a retailer like Macy's? Thanks.

I hope this helps

Bed frame

Shouldn't cost any more than $100-120. Legget. & platt make them for around that price. If you can find any deals on Enso mattresses, I recommend. I'd choose Serta over Sealy 99 times out of 100. Best to try out; go in store, remove your shoes, don't feel self conscious, take your time. iF you don't like down the road due to a " comfort issue" ( Not a defect), your stuck with it.
Sleepy offers price match.

So I'd do that if you needed to lie on the bed before purchase. Then go out to dinner. Look up your matress online. And make sure you get the best price upon purchase.
I have a serta that was firm with a pillow topper and memory foam

That everyone loves. It's a queen. Now in our guest room.

We have a GS sterns we just bought and love it. Quality is totally there. Out of your price range but if you got one on a close out - bingo.

IKEA actually is worth a look too
Where are you located?

buy as much mattress as you can for the money. See if you can get a discounted box spring (torn fabric, wrong color, discontinued etc) because nobody will really see it. I would also see if they can throw in the frame for free because I've purchased four mattress sets over the past ten years and I never paid for the frame. You might be able to find a frame for a lot less than $100 at a Goodwill or SalvArmy type place or even craig's list. Mattresses are like work shoes, you never regret buying a good pair of work shoes but you hate yourself for buying crappy ones.

Tempurpedic. Can you believe people spend up to 10 grand for a mattress? I'd sleep on a piece of plywood before I spent that kind of money.
You spend your money, you get your product

I had a couple spend over 9 on a Tempu Pedic, king split with twin xl adjustable bases. He suffered greatly from gastric reflux, and the bed helped him no end. You spend 1/3 of your life in bed. It's an important investment, especially if you have back or hip issues , GR, etc.

I'm looking for a mattress and have decided to go the foam route. Any thoughts on memory foam, foam vs latex (assuming I am not allergic to the latter?

Anyone have experience with Ikea? I like their return as well as exchange policy.
LPete, big difference if you have medical issues.

You yourself assuming you have no medical issues would spend 10 thousand on a mattress?
Only one piece of advice - - - -

DO NOT PURCHASE YOUR MATTRESS AT SLEEPY'S.

If I could afford it, yes I would. It sounds corny, but you can't out a price on a good nights sleep. It's not a "mattress" that's 10k. You're getting a sleep system that's going to be part of your life 8 hrs a day for the next 20years

Jay- most manufacturers now incorporate a type of foam into their mattresses. Even the old inner spring mattresses has a "foam" topping as a selling point. I honestly believe that in 6-10 years inner spring mattresses will no longer be on the market.

The beauty of memory foam is that it's pretty much defect free. With inner spring/foam, people will complain of permanent dips and impressions. Usually this happens down the middle of the mattress. With memory foam, it's pretty much impossible to happen. I have a tempu Pedic and love it.

If you haven't slept on memory foam before, the first week is kinda rough. But once your body adjusts, your golden. Tempu Pedic have a MRP so the price will be the same statewide. They do have promos throughout the year and are well worth keeping an eye on.
Serta iComfort tapped into the Tempu monopoly. They have some pretty sweet cooling technology, and claim to sleep 3 degrees cooler than Tempu. I think that's just a pitch; the old wives tale is that Tempu sleep hot. It's not true. If your bedroom is hot, it'll sleep hot.

Stay away from Kingsdown. Simmons are good and just came out with a line called IQ I believe. That's a pretty cool line.
Depending where you live

The Original Mattress Factory is just as good or better than others without the huge markup. Mattresses are among the highest markup items.
