Feel bad for Donnell

Essex : 10/19/2014 7:36 pm
1. He really cares and competes; and
2. He has the best catching hands I have ever seen at TE. They are like glue.

But if he continues to get stripped it is a real problem. Hoping it was just a bad night. I love him and think he can be a great TE.
He may not see the field again if TC continues to

handle those situations as he has in the past. We may now see the great JPP of tight ends.

Young projects will break your heart. But sometimes they turn out to be worth it. Donnell looks like he may be one of those guys.
Oh please

You know every time you put your hands on the ball the d is going to try and strip it

They drill against it over and over and over again. Makes me sick.

He got outmuscled on both, he held ball fine--nothing to do with brains. You must be a rocket scientist, though.
He was fighting for extra yardage both times.
Rjanyg : 10/19/2014 7:42 pm : link
First one killed us. He will need to get stronger unless he wraps both arms on the ball.

He led the team in catches and yards

So if he sucks what does that say about the rest of the receivers?

That they suck too?
He plays TE
Emil : 10/19/2014 7:53 pm : link
like a former QB.

Can run good routes, can catch, pretty athletic, but is not tough with the ball in his hands. Not ready to give up on him at all, he has a role to play, but he is making some costly mistakes.
Donnell did not lose this game, the defense did
jeff57 : 10/19/2014 7:54 pm : link
Gave up 9 of 14 third downs and 425 yards.
I like Donnell ...

His problem isn't like Tiki. He just lets guys guys rip it away from him. He just needs to be a man

.. oh come on, really?

Great ball catching hands but bad ball holding hands I guess.

Go watch some tape of Mark Bavaro.. and he could block too.
I feel bad he has fumbled
pjcas18 : 10/19/2014 9:05 pm : link
now at three critical game changing times.

I don't feel bad for him though.

If you think Bavaro had glue hands, you never saw him play. Best TE I ever saw, but he was definitely not a sure thing. Bavaro would have never, ever made that one hand grab Donnell made today or that circus catch he had against the Redskins with one hand.
and that is not to say bavaro didn't have good hands
Essex : 10/19/2014 9:34 pm : link
He did. Donnells hands are off the chart. For that position, that is a big plus. However, if he keeps fumbling, it won't matter how good his hands are. He needs to clean that up, fast.
this season is toast

let him learn and develop for next season
one thing
giantfanboy : 10/19/2014 10:48 pm : link
now he is a marked man
every defensive player will try to strip him of the ball going foward
Huh?
Matt M. : 10/19/2014 10:51 pm : link
The best catching hands of any TE you have seen? How long have you been watching football? He doesn't even have the best hands in the game now, let alone all time, at TE.

You know who I fell bad for? The fucking fans that had to watch another fucking game handed to the opposition.
Terrible thread...

Donnell is a good player
Ralph.C : 10/20/2014 12:32 am : link
This is his first year as a starter. Sucks that he fumbled twice but I still have high hopes for him.

1st fumble
bc4life : 10/20/2014 9:11 am : link
He was fighting for extra yards and looked like the strip was an afterthought. and f memory serves had he not made those extra yards they would have had to punt?
Yeah, he was right at the line
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/20/2014 9:16 am : link
on the first fumble. Not guaranteed that they would've had the yardage.

Have you seen some of the one handed grabs he makes about 8 feet in the air? I have not seen that in my lifetime, no. I think I can remember one drop so far this season and he has been targeted about 40 times. The guy has glue on his hands. He is not the best TE in football, far form it, but his hands and ability to get a ball are second to none. I have definitely never seen a Giant have his hands at that position and I saw both Shockey (mediocre hands) and Bavaro (good hands).
Donnell
bc4life : 10/20/2014 9:24 am : link
might develop into the best TE we've had since Shockey

So basically you're saying Donnell might be better than Boss, Ballard, the JPP of TE's, Fells, Pascoe and some practice squad guys.

Not exactly the gold standard for TE's.
Kevin Boss was a really good player.
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/20/2014 9:32 am : link
It's a shame he was lost to head injuries.
solid to very good
bc4life : 10/20/2014 9:43 am : link
TE play, both blocking and receiving, is something I would be pretty happy with.

If we got solid to very good play form all of our players, we would have only two losses, at the most.
I don't think his hands are quite in the Todd Christensen class.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/20/2014 9:52 am : link
He doesn't catch the ball as cleanly, or secure it as quickly. Donnell does have a very large catching radius, which makes his hands even more impressive.

"Best hands ever" is kind of an academic point. Donnell's hands are very, very good. The marginal value of upgrading them to Christensen's level would be pretty small. The marginal value of upgrading his blocking and ball security, however, would be enormous.
first fumble
giantfanboy : 10/20/2014 12:54 pm : link
Donnell had the first - the ball was over the first down line when he was stripped

even if he doesn't have the first
it is 4th and inches

RE: Bavaro
Bubba : 10/20/2014 1:02 pm : link
Everyone remembers that play in San Fran dragging guys downfield. But everyone forgets he did it again in the same game only to have the striped away and recovered by San Fran. You take the good with the bad.
