Time for change...Goodbye, Coughlin

EddieNYG : 10/19/2014 8:14 pm
It's time for the Giants to make a change at HC at the end of the season. Coughlin and his staff is getting out coached more and more often.

Since starting 2012 at 6-2, this team is 13-17.

The Giants are getting out coached and out classed.

I love Coach Coughlin, but it's time for him to go.

I'm sorry to say that...

Good lord
What should Coughlin be known for?
hitchchops : 10/19/2014 8:38 pm : link
Those who talk about his discipline or attention to detail might as well work for ESPN, because those are media constructed descriptions not based in reality. His teams are more often than not ill prepared and definitely not disciplined, but capable of being really good in streaks. It was time to move on after last season, but they balked, and I have little doubt that will set us back an extra year. As for a replacement, who knows (David Shaw?), but sometimes uncertainty is better than getting exactly what you expect, which is the low-end of mediocrity.
And hire who?
chiro56 : 10/19/2014 8:41 pm : link
Please give me a name of someone right now you want as head coach . TC is a great coach. He is not too old nor has the game passed him by. He is a motivator and administrator . We will no doubt make some changes on the staff if this season continues to go sideways. I feel things will trend up and we finish strong.
Tom Coughlin has coached from 1995-present..
Sean : 10/19/2014 8:43 pm : link
with 2003 being the only year he hasn't coached. Think about that, that is incredible. Belichick started his tenure with the Pats in 2000 after a long break since the Cleveland HC job. Reid has been coaching since 99, but Coughlin going from 95-present is just amazing,

I do think it's sad the disrespect this guy gets on the site and how many times fans want to push him out. Jet fans want Rex to stay and TC has given us two Super Bowls and relevancy just about every year here. Even last season when the team could have quit, they went 7-3 down the stretch.

But the reality is the NFL is changing and although I don't believe the game is bypassing him I also know we aren't getting results.

I believe if the Giants don't make the playoffs he will retire. He won't want to put Mara in the position to have to fire him making Mara unpopular. He is 60 plus years old and I think he will walk away.

They stunk last year. 7-3 was a mirage against backup QBs and cost us a top 10 draft pick, but probably saved TC's job.
He gave us 2 Super Bowls?
hitchchops : 10/19/2014 8:57 pm : link
WTF does that even mean? So we can move on from the players that actually played in those SB victories, but we are permanently stuck with the coach? Yeah, that makes sense, he will coach us forever, get used to being blown out 6 times a season. Or we can acknowledge his previous success while at the same time recognizing his methods are no longer effective...you know, hold two thoughts at the same time, crazy.
Coughlin is one of the best coaches in the league..

This is that time for the Giants. A year too late in my opinion. They should have cleaned house last off-season and started fresh.

He'll be given a chance to resign after speaking with Judy. Just like after last season when they told him KG was gone and gave him some time to thing about coming back. Remember Reese told the press TC was given some time to think about things.
I may be wrong, but "given a chance to resign" means "given a chance to renounce the $6.7 million the Giants owe him for 2015." That's a lot of money to give up for a little face-saving. And it's not a big favor to him.
What was with the play calling at end of half?

Took a timeout

Half

The laundry lost of add scenerios is adding up (start the game 3 into the line, last weeks bizzare challenge against Philly, etc).

arc: TC will always be remembered for his 2 great SB runs. However there are glaring problems with this team that he is responsible for. I'd either promote him or retire him at the end of the year.

Bring in a younger D minded replacement that won't mind keeping McAdoo for at least a year.
Unlike many other sports
KeoweeFan : 10/19/2014 9:44 pm : link
the NFL is structured to penalize the successful teams and promote the "lesser" under the philosophy of parity. Keep that in mind when you criticize TC and Reese (it's quite alright to go after Quinns' head) in down years. Over the long haul I'll take TC and JR over most other mgt teams.
(I think TC had a lot to say in the hiring of BMc over Gilbride and that this was his way of changing with the times.)

This is our main offensive issue. WC offense sets up the run by using short passing game. Doesn't mean they don't run or have a commitment to it, but first downs where we run and gain nothing puts us behind from the get go and this is because Coughlin demands the offense to force the run all the dam time. It's not his philosophy to use the short game to do so. That's the issue with out O right now. Take the handcuffs off the guy and let him do what he was brought in to do.

Defenderdawg : 10/19/2014 9:57 pm : link
And ask what current Giants would start for them, maybe Beckham if he developes as expected, maybe Justin Pugh instead of Free or his replacement but who else...I have not seen this wide a disparity in offensive talent since the 70's...and outside of Beckham potentially who scares you on the Giants...

Defensively without injuries we may have better personnel than how we are performing but when you have to run the Will Demps and Fenner's out there in key situations you are asking for trouble.

This team lacks talent, change HC's if you will but there needs to be substantive change in the front office as well...no excuse for the lack of young talent on this roster.

Dawg: I agree. Reese had 5 bad drafts in a row. It looks like he changed people or philosophy b/c it looks like 2013 & 2014 were good drafts. I'd keep Reese around.

Losing Coughlin would be an error

Packers vs. Giants : 2014 Pass vs. Rush
mrvax : 10/19/2014 10:15 pm : link
According to NFL.com,

Green Bay: Rushes: 175 Passes: 218 % of run plays: 44.5
NY Giants: Rushes: 213 Passes: 230 % of run plays: 48.0

Not a huge difference. In a 60 play game it's a difference of choosing 3 more runs than passes.

Today it probably should have been 70/30 in favor of pass.
yeah, but how many times were we behind in a game
SHO'NUFF : 10/19/2014 10:19 pm : link

that's fucking bullshit. MacAdoo calls his own plays. If you think TC is calling his plays you're a dumbass.People talk shit about "Let MacAdoo run his own offense" as if he fucking had one. He was a TE coach, not an OC, he came here with some plays out of someone else's playbook, threw in a few of his own and TC gave him some and they came up with a paybook. wasn't a case of a tyrant dictatiing an offense, was a case of an established HC giving a noob an opportunity and a helping hand in a position he's never done before at ANY level. You people are high. It's sad.

What's FAR more likely is TC told his fucking Noob OC "To beat Dallas you need to establish the run" and it's quite fitting for an HC to do that and establish a general approach. That the guy doesn't have werewithal to change his approach and adapt is on him, he should or could have made adjustments, don't blame TC for MacAdoos shit. People need to own their own shit, and if MacAdoo doesn't own his then he sucks anyway.
The problem is the NFL has changed
oipolloi : 10/19/2014 11:57 pm : link
I think TC has done a good job adapting. But at age 68, there is only so much you can change.

If this pass-dominated era was just a fad, I'd trust Coughlin. But if it is here to stay, I fear TC just may not the best guy . I think he still does a good job but this type of football is just not his forte
nobody said TC is calling the plays

ron in new mexico : 10/20/2014 12:28 am : link
I see the problem as being mostly the D.

And with a few players excepted like JPP. I just don't see a lot of talent out there..
On paper sure, great players with history behind them.
Now this season….not so much. Ham and eggers. A four man rush that can't mount a push, just standing around. I can't blame that on the HC.

Maybe he does need to go, if he wants. But I think with the current cast any coach would have a problem,

Just me I know I am a minority..
It is almost as if..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/20/2014 4:11 am : link
Giants fans, who believe they are so close to the team, have a direct opposite opinion of those in the league when it comes to perceptions.

Talk to front office guys, scouts and assistants and they all speak very highly of TC. His reputation is stellar. Only on BBI do people think he's done or the league has passed him by.

In the same vein, you see the training staff looked at as incompetent here, yet among their peers, they are considered one of, if not, the top organization.

You know what the secret is that most NFL insiders will tell you? 75% of the teams are average, fluid masses, with that group being able to go anywhere from 12-4 to 4-12 with just a couple of positive or negative twists and turns. The Giants are looked at as part of that group.

Fans think they are so close to the pulse of things because they watch the games, but so many really have no clue what perceptions are on the inside, what reputations are and etc.

They look at things in a vacuum. "The Giants are the only team who suck at 3rd down conversions" or something like that, while Washington had converted only ONE 3rd down of 3rd and 10 or more going into yesterday. It is a vacuum that seems to suck the sense out of so many comments.
With the pieces in place, TC can, and has won.....
Crispino : 10/20/2014 7:32 am : link
Super Bowls. He did it without all the pieces in place last time. It's not like he had a stroke and suddenly forgot how to coach. He doesn't have the horses right now. Subpar drafts and more prominently, bad injury issues have left this team with a talent deficit compared with other teams. Pretty simple.

Over the last 8 or so years we are the most successful team in the league and over the last 5 (4 of which we missed playoffs) we've still been a top 10 team over those last 5 years...Other than the 0-6 start we've never been bad since Eli's rookie season... Thats a long sustained run... People need to calm down the team we lost to on the road smacked the Superbowl champions in their house..(score looked a lot closer than the actual game) with out injuries we couldn't have done much better.. When the talent improves we'll beat dallas in dallas once again... After the last 2 drafts I am willing to give Reese another draft as well... Also there aren't any better coaches just sitting out there..
In my view, the defense is a big problem
JonC : 10/20/2014 8:38 am : link
On an almost every week basis, there's virtually no pass rush or pressure generated, the LBs stink, injuries and poor personnel decisions have weakened the secondary, and we know that Fewell will often get outcoached and make strange deployment decisions.

The offense is a work in progress; the OL lacks some talent, the system is new and the OC is a playcalling rookie in the NFL demonstrating some growing pains.

The team as a whole repeats fundamental mistakes and mental errors, which several players kept repeating last night in post-game. FIX IT! It's about focus, attention to detail, mental preparation on the little things and firing out of the locker room ready to play.
Jon, I agree
jlukes : 10/20/2014 8:43 am : link
I guess Fewell still thinks that Kiwanuka can play in this league when it is pretty clear (for a number of years) that he is toast.

We can't get home with 4, so QBs have all day, and that allows the wide receivers to run around our banged up secondary and Quintin Demps.
It's a talent issue.
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/20/2014 8:45 am : link
It doesn't look like Williams is ready for a starting role. The OL isn't as good as it looked at it's best. There's a depth problem at RB, S, and a rash of injuries at CB.

everything Fewell does is predicated on getting home with 4
Essex : 10/20/2014 8:48 am : link
that is why his defense was so good in 2010 because we were able to generate a pass rush that allowed the system to work properly. Before our run in 2011, we couldn't get a pass rush and that is why we were 31st in defense. The last two years in more of the same. We don't even try to blitz and go man to man. Last year, our defense just feasted off of bad and backup qbs, when we played real qbs, like Romo and Rivers we got toasted.
Just great!
nicky43 : 10/20/2014 8:53 am : link

bc4life : 10/20/2014 9:02 am : link
guys were in position most of the game they just failed to make plays. Fenner falling down, Demps not even making a play on the ball for the 2nd Escobar TD. Demps missing the sack.

Bryant really hurt them yesterday. and yes, the LBs are invisible. Williams is an over-sized safety - I see no indication he can be their will long term, and there is no other alternative on this team.

Talent is Starting with the O-line . Its been
a Hodgepodge of Free Agents and Projects .
Not One Single one is Pro Bowl Material or
dominate consistently enough to move the line of
scrimmage.
Williams is still a rookie and needs space to run
hardly shifty .as is the rest of our RB's .
We need a 3rd down back .
Donnell is starting to develope but had a bad game
with two fumbles .
Why can't Moore Beat out Kiwi who has never been an impact
player . Tuck was still a better option .
There is ZERO pass rush we lack an impact linebacker
it was obvious what a Guy Like Beason Brings to the
team but he has a lot of tread on the Tires .
We let are best safety go in Will Hill for smoking a lil weed Ok One thinks he deserves it . Rolle is still playing
good but for how much longer .
Special Teams are tragic in all phases .
Were a 500 Team and thats even a stretch .
Is it only people...

If the Giants don't turn things around, that will be 3 consecutive seasons without a playoff berth. The Giants can get anyone to do that.

I had no idea who would replace KG after last season, but he still needed to go. And Eli has been much better than he was at any point over the last year and a half. Just like everyone else in the NFL, Coughlin needs to produce results or he needs to go. Fear of the unknown isn't a good enough reason to keep him.
I agree with a lot of what has been said
EddieNYG : 10/20/2014 1:45 pm : link
That the Giants have a talent problem.

I'm also not against keeping coach Coughlin and letting him retire on his terms.

I'm just really upset that this team is so inconsisent the last couple of years. And the same issues arise week in and week out.

For the record, I'm not someone who has been ready to push Coughlin out the door after every loss.
