What's happened to the OL?

chris r : 10/19/2014 8:57 pm
During the three game streak they looked great. The last two games they've been bad. Consequentially offensive production has plummeted.

What are the reasons for this dramatic dropoff in OL play?
The pass pro was quite good today.

Far better than it was against the Eagles.

The run blocking? Not so good.
Pugh

is playing hurt. Walton and Jerry were other team castoffs. Richburg is a rookie. Beatty is up and down.
They didn't 't play Atlanta and Washington

What's Pugh's injury and when did it happen?
They're facing better competition...
GloryDayz : 10/19/2014 9:02 pm : link
- Teams have more film tape to see weaknesses...
- Without Jennings speed/quickness defenses arent worried they get burned around the edges
- I think Pugh is hurt
Pugh got hurt in preseason.
arcarsenal : 10/19/2014 9:03 pm : link
It's his elbow, IIRC.
Isn't Pugh suppose to come off the brace after bye?

He's not even on the injury listed, Giants havent acknowledged an injury, but since he's worn the arm brace (Philly game) he hasnt been playing well

has something on the injury. It was preseason and he's been wearing the brace all season. So that doesn't explain the fall off, unless its worsened.

They are playing their 3rd RB who is between the tackles runner.

If you are the opposing defense, where are you pressuring. We could have HOF players on the interior, but if they crowd the the line, your are not gaining anything.

When the formation has the TE move to the backfield, dead give away it is a run.

Beatty has played fine, Richburg is very good. Pugh has struggled. Jerry is what he was very good or very bad - no consistency. Walton is OK
when is Schwartz coming back?
Mike B from JC : 10/19/2014 9:10 pm : link
GOTTA get better on the oline.again we failed to address lb at all and it's costing them.
They were better today than last week.
barens : 10/19/2014 9:15 pm : link
There were some bad moments, just as there was with Dallas' offensive line, but I don't think either Hillis or Williams have enough game to be starters. Williams, I don't know if it's a rookie thing, or he just has bad vision, but there's just something missing. He can be a powerful back, especially with a head of speed, but sometimes, you have to make your own yards when things get clogged at the LOS, and he can't do that. there are little things that Jennings does with his eyes and feet that just can't be replaced.
At this point Williams should be
KeoweeFan : 10/19/2014 9:29 pm : link
a 4th Q back (al la Parcells, 'we are gonna run out the clock; try and stop us'). Of course he needs the OL to be better at run blocking. We need Jennings back.
The probability is that at best this is going to be a learning year for a lot of new players on offense. I just hope Eli and some of the veteran defensive players can hold up for another year.
What happened to the OL.
giantsfan227B : 10/19/2014 9:30 pm : link
they are starting to play real competition. They didn't look great in the pre-season nor against Arizona or Detroit (2 good teams). Then they play 3 mediocre teams and look like world beaters followed by 2 very good teams and look like crap again. And guess what. They are going to probably look like crap assuming no changes are made over the next 3 weeks as they play 3 very good teams. Plus don't forget we will be seeing Dallas and Philly again.

Then we will play the likes of Jacksonville, STL, Washington and Tennessee where they look like pro bowlers.
Here's my glass half empty, ultra pessimistic view
SB : 10/19/2014 9:32 pm : link
Beatty is at best a slightly above average tackle. But he's always been a below average run blocker.

In 2013 Pugh was the 7th OL to be picked, and this year he is playing like there's a reason 6 OL went before him.

In 2014, in the best draft for OGs and OTs in a decade, we failed to draft an OG or an OT.

Reese signed a bunch of free agent dreck (Walton, Jerry and Brown) and they are playing like it. Or as in Brown's case, he is just wasting a roster spot.

I think there is upside with Richberg and Pugh, but I am not surprised that they are struggling. I was more surprised that they looked good against Houston, DC and Atlanta.

He should have been fired a few years ago but he was a curious hire to begin with. Obviously he is thick with Coughlin and unlikely to get blamed, like Quinn.
They are a work in progress
AnishPatel : 10/19/2014 10:00 pm : link
so you are going to have good and bad games. Factor in more film on the system so now teams don't need to watch GB film to see what we MAY run. Now they can watch our games and see what we are definitely running and game plan.

But we are a work in progress. We don't have that high of a talent on the OL anyways to begin with.
I think we have to assume Pugh is compromised.
bceagle05 : 10/19/2014 10:18 pm : link
We've seen more than enough to know he's not THIS bad. It's important that Schwartz proves he can hold down a guard spot, not that we have any choice but to play him anyway over the next couple seasons. Pugh, Schwartz and Richburg is progress.

I think the DL will soon overtake the OL as the biggest concern. Jenkins and Kiwi are aging and about done here, and JPP's contract could be a major issue. We're a long way from the days of Stray, Tuck, Osi, young Kiwi, Robbins and Cofield.
they get intimidated.
kepler20 : 10/19/2014 11:30 pm : link
When the team is down 2 scores, the OL gets intimidated because people think they cant block. So they load up the box, maybe unveil an exotic blitz, find the 1on1 matchup and annihilate us.

We're not as bad as people think, but this OL isnt built to play behind. Just too average for that.

It makes our first series' playcall even worse in retrospect.

We've struggled against 4-3 defenses.
pass protection looked pretty decent
bc4life : 10/20/2014 9:15 am : link
center fo line seemed like a busted dike on a lot of the run plays.

and two major idiotic penalties at really important points in the game. the 4th and inches?
Our Oline sucks
nicky43 : 10/20/2014 9:16 am : link
It's really as simple as that. We have very little talent on the line. This is on Reece. If you disagree that the oline sucks than just wait for the next three games. That should convince you. They can only look good against weak defenses. I say "look" instead of play because they play at the same level every week. If they play a weak defensive line they will appear to look like they are playing better but the bottom line is this is still one of the worst lines in the league.
Pugh needs to sit - he's had two really bad games
jcn56 : 10/20/2014 9:21 am : link
The problem is, who do you put out there if that's the case? It's not like we've got a lot of options.

Hopefully Schwartz coming back gives us a little more flexibility, and the bye helps Pugh recover a bit.
I think Walton and Jerry are the weakest kinks
JFIB : 10/20/2014 9:34 am : link
I focused on for much of the game rewinding after the failed run attempts. He is losing his one on one match ups on almost every running plaay. Yes everyone is having problems, but on many plays the run was stopped by Walton's man. I saw a couple of plays when Williams would have taken the ball for a nice gain but for Walton/s missed block. Maybe we have to slide Richburg over and let Schwartz take over at LG. I cant say because quite frankly, Schwartz didn't look very good there in pre season.
