Fact of the matter . Lackluster drafts have hurt

Blue Blood : 10/19/2014 11:27 pm
The Giants have either drafted poorly or had a lot of misfortune with injuries in the last 4-5 drafts.. This has created a team that simply does not have the talent overall to compete at a championship level. That to me is the most glaring issue.

Giants have taken to many risks in recent years trying to hit it BIG like they did with JPP and have taken athletic players that take far too long to develop into even mediocre NFL caliber players..

They waited to long to rebuild the OL and it has cost them. They have pooh pooh'd the LB position for far to long as well.
They have tried making projects like Robinson. Brewer. Jernigan. Barden etc etc into players and it has cost them.

They MUST turn this around while Eli still has time.

Coaching is still the more paramount concern

they fired Gilbride. It's what you guys wanted.
Agree

Lack of talent
It's true Reese hasn't done anything to rebuild the O-line
81_Great_Dane : 10/19/2014 11:35 pm : link
except draft Beatty in the 2nd, Pugh in the 1st and Richburg in the 2nd. And also draft Brewer and Petrus and Mosley and McCants and Herman. And sign free agents Schartz, Walton, Jerry and Brown. And Baas before that.

Aside from that the Giants have neglected the O-line. It's embarrassing, really. Shameful.

Lousy drafting isn't the same as waiting to rebuild. I don't think you're going to find a lot of BBIers who will defend the Giants' drafts over the last 6 years or so. 2014 appears better.
this is what happens

when you value team captains vs actual athleticism.

We firedhim a year too late.

Eli was being baited into throws and being baited into looking at certain coverages.

It's fairly obvious now that it wasn't Gilbride holding Eli back...it is Coughlin with his micro-managing. Although, Gilbride's offensive scheme didn't help any. We have yet to "unleash" Eli aside from some 2-minute drives and the 2nd half of Tampa Bay 2012.

Agree 100% Enough said..
It isn't that Reese hasn't tried to restock the offensive line.
Reese's Pieces : 10/20/2014 1:54 am : link
It's just that he's failed, or so it looks right now.

I find myself hoping that the offensive tackles are playing hurt and that this isn't really as good as they're ever going to be.
It's not the coaching on offense

Gilbride was good and I think McAdoo is/will be as well. There's just a major lack of a talent across the board there.

The defensive side isn't looking much better right now either, especially with the injuries that hit. They desperately need to add an impact LB and DL to pair with JPP. While somehow keeping the secondary together. Seems impossible. A bunch of people didn't want Suh in the past topic about him but he would seem like a Godsend right about now if they could get him without completely breaking the bank.

It's sad that we're already forced to think about the draft and what our position will be in it. But if they want to be a good team anytime soon, and they need to be with Eli in his later years, they have to draft well this year. This past draft was a good one but you need to string together consecutive productive drafts to be a great team in this league. So yeah... after all that rambling, OP is right.

and 2014 look like good drafts, but Reese had some hideous drafts before that for several years. As far as the OL, as someone said, it isn't that he hasn't tried, it's that he's tried, and largely failed. Biggest whiff IMO was drafting David Wilson instead of Cordy Glenn, especially since Glenn was apparently the highest rated player on their board.
it doesn't help
PaulBlakeTSU : 10/20/2014 9:01 am : link
when top end draft picks over the last several years have been reduced to waste due to injury: Steve Smith, Terrell Thomas, Kenny Phillips, Hakeem Nicks, David Wilson--- these were all dynamic playmakers and guys we thought had top-end ability whose careers (or peaks) were cut short because of injury. All of those players have to be replaced on top of the typical bust rate that happen with all draft picks.

That's ridiculous. No one ever said the Giants value team captains over athleticism, it's just an important part of their evaluation.

The other team that has publicly acknowledged their consideration of team captaincy...The Patriots (and Shanahan who pre-Redskins was very well regarded), so yeah your 100% agreement and "enough said" is as dumb as the original comment.

Agree with this. I get that injuries are a part of life in the NFL, but the injuries to Phillips, Smith and Wilson were career enders, and Thomas is a shell of the player he once was. On top of that is Chad Jones who never even had the opportunity to set foot on an NFL field.
And sadly, until otherwise, you have to add Victor Cruz to that list

and IMO, probably Justin Tuck as well, because that guy could never stay healthy for any prolonged stretch.
