Just a few observations from yesterday game...

M.S. : 10/20/2014 7:05 am
1) When Johnathan Hankins is in at tackle, it is really tough sledding to run between the tackles. I counted at least 3 times where he stoned DeMarco Murray for little if any gain;

2) But our edges are loose and far too many times our ends crash down and then are vulnerable to the cut back;

3) You can look at the offensive yards and points for the Giants and come away with the feeling that they didn't play so badly. However, they never got into any rhythm and Eli had to throw the ball away several times against a fierce pass rush;

4) The lack of offensive rhythm had a definite impact on the defense, which is not to make an excuse for how our defense played. But our offense looked shaky (having Cruz and Jennings out will do that) and Eli just didn't look consistently comfortable in the pocket. (Maybe he was still getting over the impact of the Philly beating he took?);

5) I have no idea why the Giants have seemingly abandoned the up-tempo offense? At times, Eli got the team to the L.O.S. in real good time, but then with all the play-call adjustments, the clock often went down to 3 or 4 seconds. Leaving a shaky offensive line in their stance that long can really backfire;

6) Bottom line after 7 games. The Giants are neither as "good" as they looked against Washington nor as "bad" as they looked against Philly. But this is a 3-4 mediocre team with significant talent gaps along the offensive line; run-stuffing defensive ends (JPP excepted) and LBs;

7) After our offensive line, our LBs are this team's second Achilles heal. And with the overall talent pool of this team, it cannot sustain injuries to front line players.
The main advantage of the no huddle..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/20/2014 7:16 am : link
is to limit the defensive substitutions, not to race to nap the ball.

Unless you know why adjustments have to be made, it is foolish to speculate on that. My guess is if the play called was run as called, Eli realizes there is a good chance it will fail, so he makes some change to it..
Good synopsis

linebacker is a major weakness
My observations
blueblood'11 : 10/20/2014 7:29 am : link
For someone who looked uncomfortable he had a quarterback rating yesterday of 116.5. He threw three touchdowns with no interceptions. At 28-14 that ninety yard drive to close to within 28-21 was as impressive as it was crucial.

When you look back on the game and the play calling it makes you wonder what they were thinking. McAdoo kept going back to plays that had no chance at working and shying away from the ones the Cowboys couldn't stop until it was necessary.

The offensive line is so up and down and at times so undisciplned it's enough to make you want to spit bullets. Yet Eli was not sacked once and I feel they should have set the run up by passing. They were hell bent on doing the opposite and even though they couldn't run for shit Dallas couldn't stop the pass. So why not pass it more because they sure couldn't stop it.

Defense. How often do we hear blown assignment. See guys riding wide open with no one around them on third and long. Three man rushes on third and long and the QB has all day long to scan the field. Undisciplned at the line of scrimmage. No one setting the edge. All game long. To me that comes down to the DC.

Perry Fewell is not a good DC. When you have the talent that exists on that side of the ball especially in the secondary along with the fact they are all veteran players still in their prime making the kinds off errors they make the DC has to take the fall. This is part and parcell of his tenure here and if Coughlin returns next year he has to find someone to bring more structure and discipline on defense.
Point number 2
Rjanyg : 10/20/2014 7:31 am : link
While he wasn't the pass rusher his stats showed last year, Tuck was great against the run. Not sure how he is doing this year for Oakland but we miss the kind of play at strong end.
For years...not just yesterday..
silverfox : 10/20/2014 7:34 am : link
...we have no answer to stopping anything in the middle of the field once they get past the DL...any back or TE has free wheeling until they get to the secondary. This will not change until personnel are changed (both players and coaches). Expect more of the same until one or both of these things are changed.

This team has always been undisciplined...mental mistakes are getting worse over the Coughlin era, not better. Coughlin as a disciplinarian is a myth that needs to be seen as what it is. I don't a damn about wearing the wrong socks or being 5 minutes early (instead of 10)to a meeting...the games are won on the field of play. I'll take 53 guys that can't tell time over 53 that kill us with mental errors on the field.

This team is full of itself, and the stuff about 2 SB in the last 7 years has made the front office complacent and too damn loyal to be competitive anymore. While they relish in gazing at the trophy case, the league has improved and moved on. Its so obvious, its ridiculous already.

So is the OL a major weakness.
Rick in Dallas : 10/20/2014 7:37 am : link
Our future center Richburg is playing guard. We really have no NFL starting. Quality guards on this team. Walton and Jerry aret backups at best. You win controlling the LOS. I hope the front office spends 2 high draft picks on the OL in the next draft.

Kennard intrigues me as a possible MLB for the future.the rest of the LB group is average at best. Williams flashes occasionally but disappears during most of the game. Rest of the group is weak. Benson can not stay healthy.
in theory

The run sets up pass is bull...we passed 80%
Effective and run10%.....what happened to
screen plays mac talked about....hillis was better
on between tackles. ..I said Friday hillis should
start...44 2nd half...still wasn't many...short passes..
medium range mostly. ..eli /13 blown play was
game changer. ..we needed 20 yrds 2 times to
get fg down 21..14...bad play calling and penalties
hurt.... when backed up to...20 few plays...we
ran 2 to 3 times...afraid eli would throw pick?...
We knew we couldnt run...take a chance...
no confidence play calling....D game plan was good
stop run...dont give up long pass.. worked good
W guys we have...O plan wasted clock...trying to run
helped dallas...we get in 1st and 25 few times
and run twice....stupid...we had talent to win...
bad coaching by tc...still said after game...balance. .
Missing their two best offensive skill position players
BillT : 10/20/2014 8:06 am : link
And a starting OL can do that to an offense. Just saying.

What a terrible,reactionary post.

I honestly believe if you fix this oline and make it top 10 again, this tean is around 5-2.
My observation
JoefromPa : 10/20/2014 9:06 am : link
the defense, this defense, never seems to be able to get a big stop, against a good team. Plenty of time to go in the game, 28-21, the Giants don't even come close to getting off the field................not saying I was surprised........expected it. But it is very frustrating.
Fewell believes in "coverage"
PEEJ : 10/20/2014 9:13 am : link
rather than pass rush. With subs in at DB he goes into protection mode. WRs still get open. The DBs best friend is the pass rush.

Absolutely right on. It was so blatantly obvious some time during the first quarter that the Giants could not run on first down, but they were going to run anyway. If ever there was a game to use the pass to set up the run, this was it.

When asked about the running game after the game, Tom was very stubborn about it, and acted like there was no problem with the running game or the play calling. That tells me that it is not MacAdoo, but Tom putting the clamps on the passing game.

Third and long once again means first down for the other team. We get a turnover and a TD, we pin Dallas down in their own end, it is third and long, and what happens? First down of course. then they had a few other chances to stop them on third down, and they choke and give up the tying TD. Witten killing us.

How is it every year the Giants go into a draft KNOWING Witten and any decent TE kills us, but we never manage to draft a LB or safety who can even attempt to cover a TE like Witten? Sure, he's great, but he ain't perfect. Especially against the swiss cheese we have put out there at LB for his entire career.

This is so true, the D made some plays yesterday and Dallas is loaded on offense so they are going to move the ball.

That said there has been a trend with this team the past few seasons that the D just seems incapable of making a key stop.

Overall the Giants defense is mediocre at best. Looking at the talent it would be dishonest to say the D is loaded, but I think there should be more consistency.

Also, the Giants D seems to lead the NFL in blown assignments.

Re: #2
Matt M. : 10/20/2014 10:32 am : link
I have been saying that for more than 2 years. Our DEs crash hard inside with regularity. It allows, as was the case yesterday, a lot of cutback opportunities and also makes it easier to get to the edge. This is one of the list of reasons I don't like Fewell.
As FatMan pointed out
Matt M. : 10/20/2014 10:35 am : link
we did not abandon the uptempo offense. In fact, they went no huddle or brief huddle a good portion of the game yesterday. I think the issue was the plays called did not match the front we were seeing. But, that is actually a benefit of the up tempo.

Again, as FatMan pointed out, it is not to rush to snap the ball. It is to prevent a lot of situational and roation substitutions on D. It is also to allow Eli to analyze the front at the line with plenty of time on the clock.
I disagree about Eli looking uncomfortable
Matt M. : 10/20/2014 10:38 am : link
He was running the offense with authority, getting everyone lined up, standing in the pocket (he took some shots after releasing the ball), moved when he had to, and even had a nice run for a first down. The interesting thing, he is throwing the ball away more often, yet his completion percentage has gone way up.

The only issue I had with the offense yesterday was the stubborn playcalling. The passing game is what kep us in the game. The insistence on running almost every 1st and second down is what kept us in unfavorable passing situations on 3rd down. Throw in some penalties and we were behind the eight ball at least once on every drive.
Passing Lanes
GERRY7 : 10/20/2014 11:34 am : link
Multiple times yesterday our interior DL's got pushed so far outside their lanes that when Romo stepped up there was no one blocking his throwing lane. Bad coaching, not talent
Hard to believe
gmenatlarge : 10/20/2014 1:20 pm : link
that anyone is calling for Hillis to start, he's a good blocker but runs like he has sandbags tied to his feet!
look at how
area junc : 10/20/2014 1:26 pm : link
easy the dagger cutback run by d.murray was at the end of game: we are playing run there and the cutback is THAT wide open? guy went 20 yards untouched in an obvious run situation

there is something disturbing about that
