Expectations are a funny thing.

jcn56 : 10/20/2014 9:18 am
Going into yesterday, had you polled the board and asked them if we were going to win, you'd get an overwhelming majority saying we weren't.

Had you told people we were going into the half tied, on the road against a tough division opponent, down a number of key players - we'd probably be pretty happy.

Had you told those same people that we had the ball in the 4th quarter with an opportunity to tie - they'd probably be ecstatic.

By the end of the game - we were a talentless roster coached by a bunch of blind people, the whole operation run by an owner who couldn't find his ass with two hands and a map.

To me, if you had the right expectations for yesterday, you can only be frustrated by two things - that injuries have once again robbed us of a few key players, and that with a few plays different in yesterday's game, we could've won.
The issue for me is that those could'ves happen far too often.

I'm pretty sick of seeing this team shoot itself in the foot.

I try to have one or two moments a day like that. I should really try to use them on actual work at some point.
And I didn't expect them to win yesterday.
Curtis in VA : 10/20/2014 9:22 am : link
But damn, I just hate seeing stupid penalties and turnovers. Expecting them to be mediocre doesn't make it hurt any less when they follow through with it, haha.
the only thing about yesterday that really pisses me off

There is no reason on earth Dallas' defense should outplay ours. None.

I don't think yesterday was an example of shooting themselves in the foot. I think it was a better team pulling it out at home.

Against Philly? Without a doubt. Yesterday - Donnell certainly didn't help matters (and he took full responsibility) with his first fumble, and at times the defense gambled with some different looks that didn't get them anywhere, but we lost a close game to a team that has only lost once.
Thats why I dont

for 24 hours after a loss. This team is about where I thought they would be before the season started. I am encouraged by the resurgence of Eli Manning and some of the players from the last 2 drafts. There is major holes in the O-line and d-line that are still being worked out.

Our defense wasn't playing our offense though, they were playing Dallas' offense. Look at the scoreboard, factor in that we gave them the ball twice in our own territory, and we took the ball and gave it to the offense on the 30 (which lead to one score), and the defense's effort doesn't look unimpressive. Might not have been a great game, but wasn't the disaster some people are making it out to be.

almost entirely about them lacking talent. That's what I thought was largely going to happen and was mostly ready for it. I can accept players just not being good enough (even I'd rather not have to).

OTOH, there is zero excuse for the team to be as badly prepared and as consistently lacking in even a semblance of discipline as this team was/is.

"fire" anybody guy and I'm still not, but regardless of your expectations coming in I think it's perfectly fine to see how the team performed in that game and realizing they had a legit chance to win and holding people responsible and accountable for the loss

Just because you may have expected them to lose, doesn't make a loss acceptable, that's not how humans work.
When I watch other games
PEEJ : 10/20/2014 9:29 am : link
I'm surprised at the speed and the intensity of the tackling. I just don't see that with the Giants D. Tacklers always seem to be "catching" the ball carriers. They don't look like they rally to the ball and seem somewhat passive. I don't know , if it's the scheme or the players.

Nobody said anything about not holding people accountable - just that it's not 'fire sale' time. The roster is not without talent. The coaches are not a bunch of idiots. It's not a hopeless situation - it's one that still requires changes/moves in order to get it to the next level, though.
Watching what the Dallas DC
PEEJ : 10/20/2014 9:39 am : link
has done with a bunch of virtual no-names, has made me a believer that the coach/DC can have a huge influence on success. It's not just the players and "execution"
its not really expectations though...
hitdog42 : 10/20/2014 9:40 am : link
its the product vs. what we think could have been...
running the ball 3 times to start the game... after last week... disgusting.
running constantly on 1st and 2nd down... with guys who are 1 trick or zero trick ponies... awful....
no shots downfield with a special player like ODB... terrible.
penalties that are reckless- terrible

Not playing Moore... frustrating.... not benching demps... annoying...

I don't mind the loss... I mind the playing not to lose type of team they have been for 2 weeks... play to win good lord... be aggressive and assertive and your team likely responds better.
Yesterday didn't really bother me
St. Jimmy : 10/20/2014 9:42 am : link
at all. The effort put forth in Philadelphia last Sunday gave me the proper perspective on this team and this season. I couldn't sleep after that one. Yesterday, slept like a baby.

Agree completely. Just saying even though many of us expected to lose or at least felt it was a legit possibility, once you have watched the game feeling like you had a legit shot at winning were things done differently is frustrating. even more frustrating is the sense that those same things might be repeated the next game.

Definitely not suggesting fire sale time. Just that expectations change when you see results.

Look at 2007. Most of the fans probably expected the worst after the 2006 ending and the 2007 beginning, but once the team started reeling off all those road wins the expectations changed with it. which is why December was so frustrating then such relief.
NFL football is entertainment
mdc1 : 10/20/2014 9:47 am : link
and fans like to be entertained by their teams winning football games, otherwise they would spend that time on something else. When the team does not win, they are not happy with the product, although some will accept mediocrity, many do not. Expectations are in the eyes and ears of the consumer of the product.
The times sure have changed

...it wasn't all THAT long ago that crappy teams would play the Giants and afterwords, THEIR fans would be saying "come on guys this wasn't that bad at all; the Giants only beat us by 10 points. We were competitive. It wasn't nearly as bad as the ass kicking we took last week!"
How can anyone

Yes and no. I fully expected us to play a tight game with a decent amount of scoring. I think this game qualifies. I expected the giants to have a shot to win. Again, this met expectations.

Then you look at how they lost...bad penalties to stall drives, fumbles, defensive breakdowns, an an insistence on calling a run after run with the same poor effects. I truly think a better called game on offense would have overcome all the other issues and the Giants win that one. We played into the Cowboys hands.
I'm very surprised we didn't win, not shocked, surprised..
Big Blue '56 : 10/20/2014 1:13 pm : link
I believe, as the season plays out, we'll make up for the loss of Cruz, as big as his loss was..Donnell will help, but obviously needs to hold onto the ball..

Had we had Jennings yesterday, we would have won. Period..His loss really fucked us(I was laughed at when I made this statement following his injury), but we regroup, get Schwartz back, hopefully Beason benefits with two weeks of rest so there's some semblence of what he can be...

We play a vulnerable and far from strong SF team whom we trail by a game..Seattle is proving extemely beatable albeit almost unbeatable at home where we venture to..We're one game back in the loss column..Hoping Az wins the division..Detroit is Detroit and I expect to pass them..One of Philly or Dallas are a key injury away from falling back to the pack..

Nothing's certain, except there are 9 games to go and we need to get healthier and FAST...The only games we could not have won even with everyone healthy involved Detroit and Philly..We play Detroit now we win...Not Philly yet without a threatening run game..

But again, the Jennings injury was equivalent to Dallas losing Murray(Not claiming RJ is better, but team impact is/would be the same)..
Watching that game,

I had a feeling, the Cowboys were playing not to lose(conservative), and the Giants not to win.....

Yes, the Giants scored to make it 28-21, but then like last year, the defense could not stop the Cowboys when they had to....

Fact is, the Giants are not as bad as last year....they will be in games in the fourth quarter....but they are not a team that can control the fourth quarter, to be winners....that doesn't happen overnight.....the Giants still have a way to go.....
