Kelly: FSU 'rewarded' for blown coverage

But again, the play itself, in terms of what we ask our kids to do, it was pretty clear what happened on the play: Florida State blew the coverage and they got rewarded for it. It's unfortunate.

The weather kept Stanford in that game. It was fucking miserable between the cold, rain, and wind.

There are two good teams in the Pac 12. Oregon and Arizona State
and they should not have lost to Stanford

I know they needed that final drive to win, but they outgained them nearly 2-1 and fucked up 2 field goal holds and turned it over inside their own 10 yard line. Good weather that game isn't close, Stanford is mediocre at best this year and it starts right with their garbage quarterback

ND outgained Stanford 2 to 1 in that game. Rain related kicking mishaps and turnover kept Stanford in it. ND was nontheless fortunate to escape with a win due to a big drive at the end of the game.

Picking a 4th down play to throw the flag on a GW TD, to me, is wrong.

Well if it is a penalty, wouldn't calling it at that time be the right time to call it? Why would you reward team X by ignoring an illegal play?
Yes they ran it earlier several times. Got called once too for holding. Also got a TD. That was a nice play, and not as blatant as this play.
Problem on this play was Fuller driving his guy almost out of the endzone; he held the "pick" too long, I suppose.

Fuller could have played it better but his "guy" also was never making any attempt to cover anyone besides Fuller. His guy actually went inside with him when Fuller jumped inside

So that I was certain in what I saw I rewatched the play several times. Prosise immediately on contact with Ramsey drops his right shoulder into Ramsey and drives him to the inside - Ramsey is not holding. Darby, over Fuller, backpedals a couple steps then tries to step inside toward Robinson and Fuller engages and blocks him toward the back of the endzone; PJ Williams is sprinting toward the sidline but obviously can't get through the forementioned match ups. I'm not sure who should have had Robinson - probably Darby since he actually tries to cut to the inside of Fuller, but the way Williams is sprinting to the sideline, it might be him too.

After re-watching today, I think the PI is more obvious than I originally thought. I think Fuller didn't even need to engage Darby as he reacted too slowly to get to Robinson. Had Fuller stopped as if on a button hook, he impedes Darby enough that Robinson scores untouched.

the replay and didn't see Ramsey holding? He was the one who initiated contact with Prosise.

Ramsey isn't holding here?

Darby
MookGiants : 10/20/2014 2:24 pm : link
didn't just react slowly to get Robinson, he never reacted in any way that would signal he was trying to cover Robinson. Before Fuller ever makes contact with him, Darby steps inside to cut Fuller's route off, he was clearly covering Fuller and never making an attempt to play Robinson. My guess is Darby is the one who screwed it up, and all 3 were arguing immediately after the play as if someone screwed the coverage up.
Looked worse than it realy was imo
Andy in Halifax : 10/20/2014 2:26 pm : link
The first guys was held/jammed at the LOS, the other receiver comes over and looks like he's clearly blocking to open the flat. That act kinda makes it look like the TE is blocking as well, despite it being the defender instigating contact.

I think that's OPI and defensive holding, but I see why the call was OPI... on first glance it looked like a designed pick play. Tough break for ND.

So much to look forward to both the rest of this season, next season and beyond.

On Saturday the best players on the field for Notre Dame were

Golson- redshirt junior
Fuller- true sophomore
Robinson- true sophomore
Folston- true sophomore
Jaylon Smith- true sophomore
Jarron Jones- redshirt sophomore
Sheldon Day- true junior
Max Redfield- true sophomore
Cole Luke- true sophomore
Andrew Trumbetti- true freshman
Joe Schmidt- redshirt junior

The future is very, very bright. 2012 was a fluke year, they won a shit load of close, low scoring games. They didnt have the speed to compete with the big boys, now they do and they are only going to get better. Are they the best team in the country? Absolutely not, but they are incredibly young and can compete with anyone

From an NFL perspective Folston, Fuller and Smith, the LB are especially good and I pray one of them ends up in blue when they declare for the draft

Not to mention Greg Bryant who is a true sophomore, Nyles Morgan is a true Freshman, Isaac Rochell is a true sophomore... lots of good young players.

Question did the flag come from the Back judge, Line judge or umpire? if it came from the back judge i absolutely have a problem with it...that is a call that should come from either the line judge or the umpire...

Also i know it is only high school but it still applies here..i used to work with this referee and before every game he would say the same thing....Remember when your out there and your about to throw a flag, make sure it is a penalty worth throwing, make sure you see the entire play do i not see the back end of the play and assume what happened and most of all do not make yourself part of the game, every one came ehre to see the players on the field not us do not make yourself part of the game UNLESS a player's safety is put in danger and it is an obvious call...t

That is my biggest problem with officials nowadays in all sports they want to make themselves part of the game..they have to have an impact somewhere if there are no flags thrown they have to throw one otherwise they get bored or feel they are not part of the game...Joey Crawford in the NBA is the biggest cuplrit of this in the NBA he always has to do something so people start talking about him rather than the game...

My question for the people saying it is the correct call and they had to make it...if that was FSU and they scored on that play in the same fashion and the home crowd is going nuts does that official throw the flag?

This has been my gripe, 16. If that was FSU that's a GW TD and the legend of Jameis Winston grows.
Bad Calls
larglin : 10/20/2014 2:45 pm : link
Since Notre Dame fans are complaining about the call in the FSU game can we bring up the roughing the snapper call in the North Carolina game that probably cost them the game. Talk about lobbying for a call Kelly even said he told the ref before that play to watch the center they have been hitting him all day. And if you watch the play the center hikes the ball looks up and then looks back down.

No watch the play not a still - you can freeze a frame that will show anything. I really re-watched the play several times expecting to see and agree with you on the possibilty of a hold, but after seeing it slow-mo, as they engage Ramsey does have his hand up, but it is pretty quickly moved and then Prosise drops his right shoulder into Ramsey's pads and starts driving. I did expect to see a hold, but the more I watched the more I thought both Prosise and Fuller did a poor job disguising the play - way to agressive.

I'm going to disengage on this topic as I think it will only lead to hard feelings.
The future is bright again at ND. I think they will finish the season well and move into next season as a preseason Top 5 (as long as Everett Golson stays) and the haters will be out again in full force.

That was the correct call and absolutely something Kelly should have been complaining about, and I don't blame Jimbo for doing the same, coaches do it all the time. UNC destroyed the snapper on the prior two punts. You can't touch the punter until he can fully protect himself and he couldn't any of those times, pretty easy call, no idea why they didn't call it the prior two times, must not have been paying attention because on one of them he got put on his ass before he ever lifted his head. And bullshit on it costing UNC the game, that was late 3rd quarter and they were down 2 touchdowns with 2 minutes to go. It had an impact, but did not cost them the game. This call determined the game, right or wrong, because it basically ended the game. 4th and goal from the 18 is probably a less than 1% play
The punt/kick snapper always gets protection
dpinzow : 10/20/2014 2:58 pm : link
so that call against North Carolina was correct
Other teams have more legitimate gripes
jeff57 : 10/20/2014 2:59 pm : link
TCU got screwed by an interference call against Baylor, after they didn't get that call on almost the identical play on the previous drive that would have salted the game away. They should be undefeated and 4th in the country. The call ND is complaining about was a far more legitimate call.
The snapper gets one second after he snaps
larglin : 10/20/2014 3:27 pm : link
to establish himself or he can get hit. I guess Mike Peirira and the other rules officials they interviewed were wrong when they said it was a bad call since a second had passed and his head was up. I think it had a big impact in the game. Getting the ball back to start the fourth up 1 and had been moving the ball well.

I know we won't agree but just had to give my opinion.
Its a bad call no matter what
weeg in the bronx : 10/20/2014 3:33 pm : link
Its a split second play, the DB engages the WR, the offical farthest form the play throws the flag. On slow motion replay it still somewhat questionable and the play decides the game. The flag should not be thrown, it the kid of thing that diminishes what was a really good game.
you're focusing on the

Paul, the problem is that penalty is rarely ever called at any point. Makes it worse when you finally do decide to call it you call it on the final play of the game.

I agree with you that if its a penalty in the first quarter its a penalty in the 4th quarter and end of game, but if its not a penalty in first quarter then its not a penalty in the 4th quarter.

The penalty is rarely called
Mike from Ohio : 10/20/2014 8:05 pm : link
Because most teams that run those sort of picks run them cleaner. When it is run with the receivers running into the chest of the defender and locking them up, it is called fairly consistently.

Kelly is politicking to take the pressure off his kids that blew the play. Instead of positioning themselves between the defender and the primary receiver and feigning trying to get past them, they started blocking.

Every national analyst, studio host (including Lou Holtz for Christ's sake), and officiating commentator said it was the correct call. Nobody got screwed, even a little.
Kharma for a roughing the snapper call?
Rocky Thompson : 10/20/2014 8:42 pm : link

How bout Winston roughing the snapper off the field?

Listen:

NC played a great game, so far over their heads people that live here actually forgot about all their recruiting violations for one week. They got 2 pass interference calls in the first half that allowed them to stay anywhere close. ND was caught looking ahead, won the game on their own merits, NC football can go back to not being as good as Duke. They hate that.

If you don't see that Kelly is politicking for the best position if they should end up with 1 loss ( which is no guarantee, ASU will be tough) then you are either not a ND fan just giving us shit or you're not very bright.

The NCAA made the rules, Kelly is doing what's necessary to keep his team in the conversation.

You've made some excellent points the past 2 days. Stated them with more patience and more eloquently than I ever could. You can't convince everyone, some people just hate Notre Dame. I know, it seems completely illogical but they don't want to hear facts, they need to attack the greatest football program in the history of college football. It's kind of like people that actually think punk rock takes talent, they're just rebelling against the establishment.

My suggestion, let it lie man, you can't state your case any better than you have. Let's just get through the rest of the schedule and see what happens with one loss for the fourth spot...
I've seen two articles on the ACC confirming the interference
Mike from Ohio : 10/20/2014 9:44 pm : link
call was correct, and a video from the Head of ACC officiating saying the same. Where did they announce that the ball was spotted wrong after the correctly called penalty? I'm asking because I honestly can't find it.

I do stand corrected though on the other point. Every national commentator (except Gary Danielson) believes the call was correct. Very persuasive stuff.
Mike
MookGiants : 10/20/2014 9:46 pm : link
didn't mean to say they announced it, but the ND beat writers are saying that on ND's conference call with the ACC last night they were told the officials should have given them first and goal from the 9. They clearly blew the call on the helmet thing, that one isn't even debatable, there is no gray area there.

And I don't think
MookGiants : 10/20/2014 9:52 pm : link
the call was awful, i think it was ticky tack, and for people saying well the helmet thing had nothing to do with the outcome of the play, based on the way the FSU defenders played it neither did the picks because no one ever attempted to cover Robinson.

Both should have been called, imo, no way should that have wound up with ND having 4th and 18 based on what happened
Why would the ACC officials tell the ND beat writers
Mike from Ohio : 10/20/2014 11:16 pm : link
it ould have been 1st down at the 9? It was a 4th down play. If they make the helmet call after the PI, why would ND get a fresh set of downs at the 9?

I can't find that story anywhere either. Which beat writers for ND are reporting this?

From someone at the ACC that the result of the offsetting penalties should have been ND moving back 7 yards, but getting a new set of downs? And there is no story on this shocking admission, only a tweet?

Do I really need to state the obvious here - this is nonsensical. The guy either made this up, or didn't understand what he heard. How can that fact pattern be right? If no PI on ND it is a touchdown. If PI on ND and Personal foul on FSU, they replay 4th and goal from the 2. If the PI on ND and the play is over, and then a dead ball personal foul on FSU, it is FSU ball at the one based in half the distance to the goal. There is no scenario that results in 1st and goal at the 9 for ND. Clearly no official told him that.

It was a hell of a game. I understand why Kelly is bitching - to remove the blame from his players - but then complain about the personal foul being missed, not the obvious PI.

Mike, the unsportsmanlike conduct is enforced as a dead ball foul, therefore it is enforced AFTER the pass interference is enforced. So they move back to the 18, then go half the distance, automatic first down.

Eric Hansen is a very well respected writer. He would not make up stuff and pull it out of his ass. For whatever reason, the ACC has not felt the need to confirm that the officials blew the helmet play publicly, mostly because major outlets don't seem to give a shit about, for what reason I don't know. Or because they know they don't need to confirm it, because Helen Keller could even see that they blew that.

Agree on the assessment of the dead ball foul. I had that one wrong.

However, I am having a tough time believing that the ACC officals were running all over the place telling Kelly and ND beat writers that they blew the call, but then not admitting it publically. What possible benefit could there be? My guess is they said the on-field officials didn't see it. Not an admission they blew it, but an admission that they did not see something away from the ball as it happened.

I don't know the beat writer, but I doubt his story. It also seems to me Kelly would be complaining more about a completely missed call - especially if the ACC told him they missed it - then he would a PI call most people believe was properly called.

Anyway, agree to disagree with you on this one. It was a hell of a game.
