The injury curse strikes again

scott in albany : 10/20/2014 1:18 pm
I understand all teams have to deal with injuries, but the giants the past couple of years have been among the leaders in the amount of injuries. It is happening again.

We lost our #1 RB who was having a good year. We lost our#1 WR. Our #1 draft pick Just got on the field, missed all of training camp. Our #1 free agent pick up is hurt ,cromartie.

We lost thurmond mcbride and taylor. It looks like Pugh is playing hurt. Beason may be done for the year. This is insane.
i was looking for "man games lost"

Coughlin put a jinx on the Giants

When he made those stupid remarks about injuries in 2004.
It is happening again.

Not sure
JoefromPa : 10/20/2014 1:28 pm : link
we would be bemoaning these injuries had the Giants better talent. They had quite a few injuries in years where they have won as well.
The Giants are a mediocre team with a very tough schedule.
81_Great_Dane : 10/20/2014 1:37 pm : link
It happens.

Despite all the wailing and gnashing of teeth, they're 3-4, by the way, not 1-6 or 0-7. They're so-so, and play so-so. A lot of Giants fans seem to forget the difference between so-so (like, losing by 10 to one of the top teams in the conference) and awful (think the Philly game, but losing like that most weeks)

The same jinx that accounted for 2 Super Bowl wins?
Randy, huh?
Ben in Tampa : 10/20/2014 1:52 pm : link
Winning 2 Super Bowls has nothing to do with the amount of injuries this squad has piled up in the last decade under Coughlin.
I should clarify that I don't think Coughlin's style of coaching
Ben in Tampa : 10/20/2014 1:54 pm : link
Causes injuries.

Just that Coughlin looked like an idiot when he claimed injuries are a state of mind and that it could be corrected.
that's
dorgan : 10/20/2014 1:57 pm : link
not what he said, but carry on. You're on a roll.
One thing to keep in mind re: TC quote
bc4life : 10/20/2014 2:00 pm : link
RE: the issue of injuries - Strahan, certainly not one of TC's strongest supporters initially acknowledged "...some of these guys have to get tougher around here." That's almost a verbatim quote and it suggested some players lacked an ability to work thru manageable injuries.

[quote]""I'm aware of the injury factor, the number of IRs, which is a cancer, let's face it," Coughlin said. "It's something that has to be corrected. It's a mental thing, I believe, as much as anything else."[/quoted]

Stupid comment, but whatever, I'm not gonna argue about it anymore.
Eagles
bignick : 10/20/2014 2:02 pm : link
I hate the eagles.
Look at our FA signings
dep026 : 10/20/2014 2:07 pm : link
Schwartz - short term IR
Jennings - Going on 2 games missed
DRC - nagging injuries have limited him in 3 games already
Thurmond - out for the year
Beason - out of the year most likely.

Yikes.
....
SamTheTram : 10/20/2014 2:07 pm : link
He said that how long ago? Time to get over it.

dorgan : 10/20/2014 2:10 pm : link

The discussion centered around the number of players on injured reserve and a few players sitting out with minor injuries. He was addressing malingering, not the truly injured. I watched the news conference in its entirety and without the context the quote can be misconstrued.

It's been mis-represented ever since.
That is the problem with jinxs
Ben in Tampa : 10/20/2014 2:10 pm : link
They last a long time
The quote, as reported, in the NY Times, from Jan 7 2004
Canton : 10/20/2014 2:10 pm : link

''I'm aware of the injury factor, the number of I.R.'s, which is a cancer, let's face it, it's something that has to be corrected. It's a mental thing, I believe, as much as anything else.''

No mention of it being a state of mind

Ok fair enough, like I said, I don't want to argue about it. It was a tongue in cheek comment about that jinx. I only sort-of believe he cursed the franchise.
I'm not

arguing.

I'm trying to stay away from that shit, but sometimes I backslide.

Have a good day.
Randy in CT also nailed Coughlin's actual comment 5 years ago.

The reading comprehension here is dumbfounding--stress the dumb part.

When playing football, you often play through pain and slight injuries (slight sprains, even broken parts in casts sometimes) but at the same time you can't/shouldn't play through certain injuries that NEED time to heel--hamstrings, high ankle sprains, etc.

Coughlin's point was that some players need to know the difference and sometimes suck it up and play even though it might be painful. C'mon...think, fellas?

I think Coughlin might have meant something different
Bob from Massachusetts : 10/20/2014 2:34 pm : link
I think he meant that you have to be mentally tough and not make excuses when you lose players, "next man up", like he often says. In other words, losing the player and then sitting around feeling sorry for yourself just makes it that much worse. He didn't mean mental toughness in regard to just "toughing it out" when you have an injury, but mental toughness in regards to adapting and moving on.
