Poor recent drafts really did the Giants in

spike : 10/20/2014 3:03 pm
As we all know, good drafts are the basis for success in the NFL. For example, the 2007 Giants draft played a pivotal role in their super bowl victory that year and later 2011.

However, more recently, the Giants did very poorly, with most top picks either suffered from significant injuries or simply did not work out. As a result, the Giants depth suffered tremendously.

2009 Draft
WR Hakeem Nicks (1/29), LB Clint Sintim (2/45), LT Will Beatty (2/60), WR Ramses Barden (3/85), TE Travis Beckum (3/100), RB Andre Brown (4/129), QB Rhett Bomar (5/151), DB DeAndre Wright (6/200), DB Stoney Woodson (7/238)

Nicks produced on a Pro Bowl level for a couple of years and simply flamed out for the Giants. Sintim got injured and never played. Will Beatty is the only productive member of this 2009 draft. Andre Brown was useful for a brief period before injuries set in.

2010 Draft
DE Jason Pierre-Paul (1/15), DT Linval Joseph (2/465), S Chad Jones ( 3/76), LB Phillip Dillard (4/115), OL Mitch Petrus (5/147), DE Adrian Tracy (6/184), P Matt Dodge (7/221)

The 2010 Draft was more promising, with JPP and Joseph and the undrafted Victor Cruz becoming the future leaders of this team. Unfortunately Linval Joseph left for a bigger paycheck, but he was a top DT while he was on the team. The rest of the draft was pure crap, not producing any bench players.

2011 Draft
CB Prince Amukamara (1/19), DT Marvin Austin (2/52), WR Jerrel Jernigan (3/83), OL James Brewer (4/117), LB Gregg Jones (6/185), S Tyler Sash (6/198), LB Jacquian Williams (6/202), RB Da’Rel Scott (7/221)

Amukamara has settled in as our top #1A cornerback in the defense. However, the rest of the draft has busted in dramatic fashion. LB J Williams had shown occasional flashes, but recently he looked like just a decent special teamer rather than a linebacker. Undrafted Paysinger also looked promising initially, but now is buried in the depth chart. Our linebacker coaching has failed to develop any productive linebackers, period. Not one. Except for Prince, this 2011 draft was a Bust.

2012 Draft
RB David Wilson (1/32), WR Rueben Randle (2/63), CB Jayron Hosley (3/94), TE Adrien Robinson 94/127), OL Brandon Mosley (4/131), OL Matt McCants (6/201), DT Markus Kuhn (7/239)

Wilson initially looked to be an excellent returner and perhaps a useful back in development. However, injuries have cut his career short. Randle has shown flashes but he doesn't seem to have the IT factor to be a no 1 WR in this league. Hosley is a bust, with this being potentially his final NFL season. Kuhn and Mosley are useful backups. The JPP of TEs is a bust and will not be re-signed.

2013 Draft

OL Justin Pugh (1/19), DT Johnathan Hankins (2/49), DE Damontre Moore (3/81), QB Ryan Nassib (4/110), S Cooper Taylor (5/152), OL Eric Herman (7/225), RB Michael Cox (7/253)

Hankins looks like a stud DT so far. Pugh and Moore might be above average NFL players. Nassib could be an all pro clipboard holder. I see potential in this draft.

2014 Draft
WR Odell Beckham (1/12), C Weston Richburg (2/43), DT Jay Bromley (3/74), RB Andre Williams (4/113), S Nate Berhe (5/152), OLB Devon Kennard (5/174), CB Bennett Jackson (6/187)

Beckham and Richburg have potentials to be special players. The rest I hope will be useful backup/bench players, but it is still very early.

Anyways, aging and injuries have depleted the Giants core of talent, but suspect drafting and sluggish player development the last few seasons have provided very little to replenish this talent base, which explains the current team situation.

Jury is still out on the 2013 and 2014 drafts, but early returns have been promising. If the Giants drafts well the next 2 seasons, they should at least be a playoff contender with Eli at QB.

I have the solution:

we need more TEAM CAPTAINS!
It's not just the draft picks,

it's the free agents, also....guys we signed either can't stay on the field or play at the level they are paid...
2009 draft

was going fine until Stoney Woodson and DeAndre Wright were caught lip synching.

It seems bad, but how does it compare to the rest of the league?

Throw out this year b/c its only been 7 games, I'd say generously 11 of those picks have contributed in some sort of meaningful way. That's like a 35% success rate from 2010-2013.
Well look at Dallas

Murray was a 3rd round pick. Dez Bryant a first rounder. Dez Bryant was a #1. Terrance Williams was a 3rd round pick. Escobar was a 2nd round pick. And they hit on all of their first round o-lineman picks. Romo was a UDFA as was the backup wr Beasley. Any wonder why they have a good offense? They have done a great job evaluating college offensive talent.

On defense, Crawford is a 3rd round pick, Carter a 2nd rounder, Scandrick a 5th rounder. They made what turns out to be an astute pickup in McClain. They also managed to pick up Melton from the Bears. Not an all-star but a solid pro.

I hate that fucking organization, but they have soundly evaluated pickups, especially on offense.
We also had a lot of bad luck come into play

More than a handful of guys had their careers cut short unexpectedly.

Overall not bad - the key is the lack of impact OL prior to 2013.
Scouting !
