DeMarco Murray's workload: at what cost?

Fan in Philly : 10/20/2014 4:11 pm
After 7 games Murray is up to 209 touches (carries and receptions) on the year. That is just about 30 per game.

A lot of research has been done in the past on the impact of that many touches on a RB's career. The best report I have seen is from Cold Hard Football Facts (see link below).

There is a long list of RBs who had their careers shortened or their long term effectiveness limited by having too many touches in a season. Eddie George, Larry Johnson, Jamaal Anderson, and James Wilder were never the same after going over 400 touches in a season.

Even if the Cowboys greatly reduce Murray's workload (let's say 22 touches per game for 9 remaining weeks), he will still end up with 400+ touches.

My guess is either Murray is injured this year (he has not been the most durable back in the past) or he remains healthy this year and is never close to this level of production again. Hope he has good financial planners working for him!

Jerry won't pay Demarco and Dez, so he'll run Demarco into the ground and pay Dez after the year.

need to draft another RB to replace him. See Felix Jones.

having to come in and out of the game after that ankle tweak.

He won't last at this pace. They're already trying to split more carries with Dunbar and the other RB.

a big priority from the team's perspective. JJ hasnt won since Jimmy Johnson left (Switzer won with Johnson's team). You know he'd give his left nut for a SB win and to prove HE can do it.

And with the state of the NFL this season (no clear favorite team) this might be as good a chance as he gets.
The surprise in all of this is that Murray hasn't been injured.

Murray is injury prone, i think the over/under on games he plays is 10.
The real interesting stat on Murray is that his career high touches

for one season is 217...last year.

The guy was injury plagued in college, and so far in his pro career as well. This current pace he is on will either be a great career year for him, or end with another injury before the big playoff push.
They can't sign him and Dez so no worry for Jerry

about running him into the ground. He'll hit the open market next year.
