NFT: Normal HR Talk in interviews

newjacksm : 10/20/2014 7:36 pm
So I had an interview today, which I thought I guess I could of done better. It was a screener, and I've been eyeing this company for a while.

In the phone interview I was extremely nervous, but portrayed the work that I have done and what I want to do.

At the end of the interview I was told,

"I'll get back to you by the end of the week or next week after I give the information to the hiring manager, but if we do not proceed to the second interview there are other positions that are always opening up for our company"

Is this normal protocol for HR? It striked me as odd and deflated the whole interview for me and shouldn't even think about a second interview.
That was you??

Small world. Seriously, I wouldn't read much into what the HR person said. He/She is an information gatherer who will most likely just pass along what you discussed to a decision maker. Your qualifications compared to the other applicants will most likely be the determining factor, IMO.
It's normal

The person likely took notes during your talk and will pass everything on to their manager who will make the final decision. Bringing up that they have other positions opening, I chalk that up to their normal way of conducting such interviews.

Out of curiosity, is that a large company?

No it's not, the company I work for now is quite large, but I am looking to get into a smaller company that is more focused in my field. I've only been out of school for about 2 years, so I am relatively fresh to all of this.
The screeners know nothing

When I was interviewing for my current position, I flat out asked the screener if the position required working with a specific company. I had a ton of experience working with said company and figured it was a huge plus for me. The screener told me "nope, you won't be working with company xyz in this role"

When I spoke with the hiring manager later that week, he told me I would in fact be spending a majority of my time working with that particular account.

Point is, phone screeners are working off a script and don't know a lot of details.
Avoid use of the word ....
