Draft

Miller B/R: 2015 NFL Draft: Each Team's Biggest Need and Best Fit
"The Need: Offensive Tackle | The Fit: La'el Collins, LSU
William Beatty's days as the left tackle of the New York Giants are limited. Very limited. He may play out the season, but you can bet general manager Jerry Reese has already hit the road to check out the top tackles eligible for the 2015 draft. With what would be a pick in the middle of the first round as of now, the Giants would miss out on top tackle Cedric Ogbuehi but will have a nice group to pick from in the second tier. Assuming Brandon Scherff is probably off the board when the Giants pick, LSU's La'el Collins could be the ideal player. Collins has the size, arm length and athleticism to be a left tackle in the NFL from day one, and most of the weaknesses keeping him from being a premier prospect are fixable early on. And with a good line around him if all starters are healthy, Collins can learn from experienced studs like Justin Pugh and Geoff Schwartz while he and Weston Richburg form the future of the line.
Secondary Fits: Brandon Scherff (Iowa), Andrus Peat (Stanford), Ty Sambrailo (Colorado State)"

Today in Giants History

10-21-1928 Detroit Wolverines 28 Giants 0
Benny Friedman of Detroit was so good (58 yard rush for TD, 4 XP's) the Giants bought the Detroit franchise, essentially just to get him.

Eric BBI: Benny Friedman: The QB Who May Have Saved the New York Giants
http://www.bigblueinteractive.com/2006/02/13/the-quarterback-who-may-have-saved-the-giants-benny-friedman/

Cronin LA Times 2012: Did the New York Giants buy a whole team just to get their quarterback?
"Mara felt that the Jewish Friedman would appeal to New York's large Jewish population. Also, of course, he felt that Friedman would help improve the team and make it a winner and winning tends to attract crowds, as well. Mara approached Fisher about acquiring Friedman. Each time Mara made an offer, Fisher turned him down. This went on for awhile before Mara finally reached a solution. The Wolverines weren't doing particularly well, either (not many NFL franchises were flush during the 1920s), so Mara just offered to purchase the entire franchise from Fisher. Unlike most other NFL owners, Mara was still quite well off (he took a big hit in the 1929 Stock Market Crash, but that was still a year away) so his attitude was that he would use his wealth to make the Giants as attractive an option for fans as possible and eventually his investment would pay off big time. Fisher agreed and Mara purchased the Wolverines franchise and promptly disbanded it (I have not been able to find the terms of the purchase - I've seen some extremely small figures thrown out there, like $3,500, but I find them hard to believe, as Friedman alone would be worth that much).
Besides Friedman (who Mara paid $10,000 for the 1929 season), a number of other Wolverines joined the Giants for the 1929 season (in fact, while Friedman was clearly the impetus behind the purchase, it is not like Mara did not also think that the other Wolverines wouldn’t play a big part in the improvement of the Giants). LeRoy Andrews even came over to become the coach of the Giants. After also adding future Hall of Famer Ray Flaherty from yet another defunct NFL franchise (NFL franchises dropped like flies during the 1920s), the Giants went on to a 13-1-1 season, losing only to the undefeated Green Bay Packers. The Giants turned a small profit in 1929. Friedman, for his part, threw 20 touchdown passes. It would be nearly fifteen years before another NFL team threw 20 touchdown passes, let alone a single player."

10-21-1934 Giants 17 Pittsburgh Pirates 7
Ken Strong kicked a 44 Yard FG and rushed for a touchdown in the Giants win.

10-21-1945 Pittsburgh Steelers 21 Giants 7
The reconstituted struggling Steelers dominated the Giants who in 1945 were reduced to playing spoiler in the East.

10-21-1951 Giants 26 Philadelphia 24
Trailing 17-0 at the half, the Giants rallied raising their record to 3-0-1. In the third quarter the Giants scored 23 unanswered points. Charlie Conerly found fellow Mississippi alumnus Bill Stribling for a 15 yard touchdown pass. Then DB Harmon Rowe tackled the Eagles' Bosh Pritchard for a safety. Later in the third Emlen Tunnell returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown. Fullback Eddie Price then ended the Giants huge third quarter with a 25 yard touchdown run. A fourth quarter Ray Poole FG extended the Giants lead to 9 and the Giants held off a Eagles comeback bid.

10-21-1956 Giants 38 Pittsburgh 10
Charlie Conerly tossed three touchdown passes and the Giants rushed for 241 yards.

10-21-1962 Giants 17 Detroit 14
The Lions would drive to the Giant 30 late in the fourth quarter on the strength of a outstanding performance by receiver Gail Cogdill (144 receiving yards on the day) but the Giants defense would drive the Lions back 16 yards on the next three plays and Rosey Grier blocked a 53 yard field goal attempt preserving the hard fought win.

The Giants Y.A. Tittle took a pounding from the talented defensive line of the Lions, suffering a contusion to his right side. Tittle somehow played against Washington the next week and without practicing all week, threw for 505 yards against Washington.

10-21-1973 Dallas 45 Giants 28
Dallas went out to a 45-14 lead with 28 unanswered points as Calvin Hill rushed for 123 yards. Giants punter Jim McCann averaged just 21.2 yards on six punts.

10-21-1979 Giants 21 Kansas City 17
The Giants third straight victory was won on a Harry Carson 22 yard fumble return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Rookie Earnest Gray had 107 yards receiving for the Giants, including a 53 yard touchdown pass from fellow rookie Phil Simms.

10-21-1984 Philadelphia 24 Giants 10
The Eagles broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter on Ron Jaworski touchdown passes to former Giants draft pick Melvin Hoover and Tony Woodruff.

10-21-1990 Giants 20 Phoenix 19
With Phil Simms injured and down 19-10 in the fourth quarter with 5:38 to play, the Giants rallied to win on a Matt Bahr 40 yard field goal as time expired. The Cardinals came into New York as a 13 point underdog.

Simms was injured after being hit by the Cardinals Cedric Mack and Ken Harvey high-low. Jeff Hostetler took over and struggled until some late game heroics. Hostetler found Stephen Baker on a post pattern for a 38 yard score to make it a 19-17 game. Then the Giants used timeouts, the two minute warning and a tackle by safety Myron Guyton on Cardinals' quarterback Timm Rosenbach two yards short of a first down to get the ball back. Following the punt the Giants had the ball on their 29 with 58 seconds left. After a incompletion, Hostetler hit Mark Ingram with a 26 yard pass down the middle. After two incomplete passes, Hostetler competed a pass of 18 yards to Lionel Manuel to the Cards 20 with 20 seconds left and with the clock running as the Giants had no timeouts. Hostetler was able to get the Giants lined up and spiked the ball with 3 seconds left. Bahr signed as a free agent three weeks prior, then kicked the winning FG.

10-21-2007 Giants 33 San Francisco 15
Osi Umenyiora had two key fumble recoveries including one returned 71 yards for a score as The Giants defense overwhelmed the 49ers. Osi's first fumble recovery at the 49er 30, set up a short Giant touchdown drive that gave the Giants a 13-7 lead. A Sam Madison interception set up a Lawrence Tynes field goal to make it 16-7. In the third quarter with the Giants leading 19-7, Umenyiora sacked the 49ers Trent Dilfer and recovered the fumble he caused returning it for a touchdown. It was the Giants fifth straight win after a 0-2 start.

10-21-2012 Giants 27 Washington 23
The Giants improved to 5-2 on a 77 yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning to Victor Cruz with 1:23 remaining. Redskins rookie Robert Griffin III was unstoppable with 258 yards passing and 89 yards rushing. With 1:38 remaining a 30 yard touchdown pass from Griffin to Santana Moss had apparently given the Redskins the victory.

Great stuff on Friedman.
truebluelarry : 10/21/2014 10:20 am : link
He's one of the most remarkable guys I've come across in my archival research. It's too bad he's been largely forgotten over time.

What he was able to accomplish throwing that bloated ball of the late 1920's is astounding. After the retirement of Ernie Nevers, Friedman (along with Ken Strong) was one of the last true triple threats, as he was also a dynamic rusher and good kicker.

He was in line to become the Giants full time player coach in 1932, but he demanded a part of the team from Tim Mara, who refused. Friedman then moved on to the Brooklyn Dodgers, for a few years before becoming the head coach at Yale.

"New York Giants – Performances of Note

William Beatty, LT: -6.1

Breakdown: After a strong start to the season, Beatty turned in his worst performance, mostly at the hands of Cowboys DE Jeremy Mincey. Beatty surrendered two hits and two hurries on 38 attempts, not to mention a holding penalty, all against Mincey. He finished at -4.2 as a pass blocker and wasn’t much better in the running game at -1.2.

Signature Plays: It’s not always about the number of pressures, it’s also about the speed at which they’re surrendered. Beatty gave up some quick ones, namely at the 14:01 mark of the second quarter when Mincey got inside him right off the snap and then the very next play which was almost identical other than Beatty holding Mincey to keep him away from QB Eli Manning.

Eli Manning, QB: +3.7

Breakdown: Perhaps lost in the defeat was a strong day from Manning who was on target for much of the day. He finished at +3.2 as a passer, including impressive work at the intermediate (11-20 yard) level where he completed 8-of-11 for 131 yards and two touchdowns. There weren’t a lot of great throws, but there were very few misses, as Manning had an efficient day getting the ball out of his hands and moving the chains.

Signature Plays: Early on, it was Manning’s accuracy late in his progressions that stood out. With 3:36 to go in the first quarter, he did a nice job of working to the “back side” of the formation to throw a well-placed “dig” route to WR Rueben Randle, even though the pass was dropped. Later in the quarter, Manning worked back side again, this time accurately hitting Randle on the comeback route to pick up the first down. Other than an ill-advised throwaway that nearly landed in DE George Selvie’s hands, Manning was accurate and decisive.

Jason Pierre-Paul, DE: +7.9

Breakdown: The yearly battles between Pierre-Paul and Cowboys LT Tyron Smith are always fun to watch, but it was Pierre-Paul who won this round. Pierre-Paul finished at +6.3 in the running game while adding two sacks, a hit and a hurry on 25 rushes to grade at +1.4 as a pass rusher.

Signature Plays: Whether it was re-directing runs as he did at the 8:12 mark of the first quarter, forcing a holding call as he did with 9:17 to go in the second, or simply getting inside to make the tackle as he did with 5:28 to go in the game, Pierre-Paul had his way with Smith in the running game. He also got around the edge for his sack with 1:21 to go in the second quarter."

I agree with all 5 moves that must be made:

Mosley or Schwartz for Jerry
Moore needs more playing time
Ayers over Kiwi
McClain over Beason
Berhe over Demps

If coughlin fails to start getting the young guys into the game, I don't think his tenure will last to long here. Mara's comments about not getting players involved quick enough last year still haven't hit home with Tom yet.
