2015 FA OL and LB

old man : 10/22/2014 1:37 pm
With all the discussion on the apparent weakness at these 2 positions, and not tossing in the towel on 2014, I was wondering what non-Giants are available this upcoming off-season that the Giants may pursue.
Suh, Hardy, Spiller, Roos

Oh, those are outside of just OL and LB, because they will fit needs.

Safety is alot more of a need than OL
The_Taxman : 10/22/2014 1:56 pm : link
A healthy Cooper Taylor helps next year but we need to also either sign a top S or draft one in the 1st 3 rounds of this year's draft. LB, S, CB depth, DE, WR depth are our biggest needs. We are one o-lineman short but I think Schwartz fills that need.
OL isn't a strong class....
Ryan : 10/22/2014 2:06 pm : link
...so the few that are there are going ot get paid.

Roos is on the decline. I know Byron Bell played pretty well last year at RT for the Panthers but haven't seen much of him at LT this year after taking over for Jordan Gross.

Top OGs are probably Mike Iupati who's been injury plagued recently. The guy I really like, but he will probably end up costing quite a bit, is Orlando Franklin from Denver. He played well at RT last year (including a really nice game against us) but got moved inside to LG after Beadles left via FA. He wasn't happy about it but he's been very good including putting on quite a show for 60 minutes this past Sunday against SF. If he's willing to stick at G he could play there or if not at RT if the team isn't still dead-set on keeping Pugh at T.

KC's OLB Justin Houston
Pete in MD : 10/22/2014 2:08 pm : link
will be sought after in free agency. Went to the Pro Bowl the last two seasons and will only be 26 in the off season.
KC runs a 3-4, no?
JonC : 10/22/2014 2:11 pm : link
That's a much different skillset at OLB.

NYG isn't likely going to spend big on OLBs anyway.

I'd look at RT's.

And move Pugh inside, Have Richburg play C
Yep
JonC : 10/22/2014 2:17 pm : link
It will probably happen at some point.

Pugh is a tackle and will play tackle as long as he is a Giant.

Welp.. there goes that idea
Packers RT Byran Bulaga
EddieNYG : 10/22/2014 2:42 pm : link
Is a Free Agent. He has had some injury problems though.

Would it make sense to bring him in on a contract similar to when they signed Shawn Andrews? Like a 4-5 year deal, but it's basically a one year deal every year?

Sign Bulaga to play RT. Move Pugh inside. Move Richburg to Center.

2015 OL is Beatty, Pugh, Richburg, Schwartz, Bulaga. Keep Walton as a backup center and Richburg's ability to play guard gives the line flexibility in case of injury. Pugh can always go out to RT.
A player signs that contract when his options are few
JonC : 10/22/2014 2:59 pm : link
Andrews had a lot of injury problems, especially with his back.

Pugh at RT could change. He's their best option at RT at the moment, but don't be surprised if they acquire another and kick Pugh inside at some point. He's struggling with injury, but there's enough film to now gauge his weaknesses and attack accordingly. He's better suited to OG, imo.
Then it's probably
old man : 10/22/2014 3:01 pm : link
either via trade, somehow, or the draft; and trade is unlikely and also the draft is not looking great halfway into the college season.
Except for Bulaga, and the Mc relationship, I don't see much chance for any of those names, except for Suh, who wants NY.
They better start looking in haystacks today for that needle.
Or 'Frankenstein' Haystacks Calhoun from the WWE graveyard for the OL.

Bulaga would be a risky signing in free agency without a deal like that.

I agree that the Giants should consider signing a free agent RT and kick Pugh inside.

It would really allow them to add players at the skill positions at the top of the draft.

They'll have access to Bulaga's medicals to make the determination, otherwise it's essentially a guess.
Those that say Pugh is only an OT....

Says who?
JonC
EddieNYG : 10/22/2014 3:25 pm : link
Bulaga would be ideal. He is a talented RT. He is very good in the run and pass games. Only knock on him would be his injury history, so the Giants would have to be careful in terms of guaranteed money.

If Bulaga makes it through the season healthy and playing as well as he is right now, he'd be a guy I would target if I were Reese and the Giants. I'm not smart enough to sit here and say x number of year for x number of dollars. But I would be paying attention to the guaranteed money.

I feel like moving Pugh inside and signing a vet FA like Bulaga would cure a lot of ills alongs this oline. Beatty, Pugh, Richburg, Schwartz, Bulaga would make Eli Manning feel a lot better next year in the pocket.
I agree an upgrade at RT is enroute, at some point
JonC : 10/22/2014 3:28 pm : link
But, I doubt they'll spend big on one in free agency given all the holes they have on defense. Have to wait and see on Bulaga's pricetag, but there's better players to be had at other positions, imv.
Franklin
BigBlueCane : 10/22/2014 5:52 pm : link
makes more sense then Bulaga.

Unknown if Reese will go after the OL free agents again after this offseason.

Personally I'd wait and see if Reese and Ross are still with the team after the season.

All the career BBI coaches and GMs of course. I don't get how one alid rookie season confers legendary status but it has here.

Beatty will be 30 next year and regardless of being better than last year I just don't think he's a 8 million $ guy. And better is mediocre at this point. Pugh is by no means a sure T. The Giants better draft a guy who can play either high IMO.
we need more youth on the team to build from
mdc1 : 10/22/2014 7:22 pm : link
instead of recycled older vets (has beens). The talent level coming out of college now is on display all over the league. We do it ourselves (Beckham, Pugh, etc)...time to get with the program.
I think we could use a mauler
mrvax : 10/23/2014 12:39 pm : link
type guy on the Oline to be excellent at run blocking.
Wait and see on Pugh if he can stay at RT, great, if not, move him in. He's only played LT his entire college career.
