From what I have seen, his ability to see a second hole if the first one is clogged is the problem. I think he will be decent when he gets more experience.
But, there are some play calls where the lateral step before breaking towards the LOS is part of the play design and timing flow.
The game is already slowing down for him a bit, with more reps and experience it will continue, and his vision and instincts should improve. He's getting used to the increased speed of the game and defenders who run faster, smaller holes that close faster, secondary cutback lanes that are further from the called hole, etc. Just needs to develop patience with reps.
He has gotten very little help from the O-line thus far. Walton is getting pushed back on almost every running play and Williams is making the most of his opportunities thus far.
we saw in our running game since Jennings went down is because of the blocking or Williams. Big difference though. Think Williams will have a hard time changing his running style at this point in his career. He is not as good as Jennings at changing direction or cutting back finding holes, and runs right into people. He needs better blocking at the point of attack from this OL. A tall order right now.
In college he maybe faced a handful of very good defensive players on any one team. In the pros their all good to great. The speed of the game at the pro level is light years ahead of the college game. To often a young RB will dance behind the line waiting for the Red Sea to part and miss that one good opportunity to hit the hole and get what you can from the play. He'll learn.
I'd like to see Cox get some touches as well. I think he has the most speed and moves of any of our RB's. If he can secure the ball better he could be a very valuable asset.
was the top combine performer in both the 20 and 60 yard shuttles (as well as broad jump) just 6 months ago.
Well, if the Giants need for somebody to perform a broad jump then they should pick him. Shuttles and broad jumps are nice, but how they play the game of football is a better measuring stick.
the game is too fast for the rookie. The ball is snapped and he is running straight into everyone in front of him. He needs to slow it down and be patient.
I believe that there is an excellent chance that Williams' running and blocking will improve significantly by the end of this season. IMHO, learning to catch this season is highly doubtful.
type runner, but he's gotta develop at least a little shake and bake. Running full speed into a defender is great to make an occasional statement or pick up the extra yard for the first down. However, on 1st and 10, if he can move into open space instead, he needs to do that.

I don't agree at all. He is supposed to be a north south runner. He should be running harder and quicker IMO. He seems tentative on many plays and his vision is not near what a top back's is. On that long run, that was him aggressively hitting a hole and getting downhill fast. That was one of the few times I came away thinking he was running hard.
I am no expert but when I watch him he runs like he needs a huge hole to hit, otherwise he runs very patiently expecting an opening and then hits the defender at the line when he can't find an opening.
Jennings and Williams was that Jennings needed only a crease to shoot thru and Williams needs a little bigger hole. Like others have said, he'll likely get better.
