Why is it a given that Antrell Rolle

Great White Ghost : 10/23/2014 10:50 am
Won't be back next year? He's led the team in tackles every year he's been here, is clearly the captain and leader of the defense, says what needs to be said when it needs to be said, misses little or no playing time, and has been solid A to z since he's been here, for years playing out of position becase he had the skill and we didn't have the personnel.

I understand he won't be back, everyone and his brother says so, but why? What is it that's so apparent that he won't be back? How is it a closed discussion? I know it is, because not a single sportswriter even considers it a possibility. Has the franchise, ownership or management been talking to these people? What is it that's so glaringly obvious that I'm missing?I want him back, in case that's not clear, and I think it's a shame that it's basically a foregone conclusion that he won't be, regardless of the fact it leaves a gaping hole(s) at safety.
I think you are arguing against a point
Blue Baller : 10/23/2014 10:52 am : link
that no one (or very few) are making
Not once in OP post did you use the word 'money', 'cost', or 'salary'
Bold Ruler : Mod : 10/23/2014 10:54 am : link
if he isn't here next year, that's the reason.
Certainly not a given to "everyone"
JonC : 10/23/2014 10:54 am : link
but the conclusion is based on his age and if he insists on a contract equal to or greater than his current deal. Ie, it's wise to be careful paying a safety approaching his mid-30s $7-8M+ per season. Logical, common sense.
Easy
old man : 10/23/2014 11:02 am : link
1.He's a 1-dimensional S;
2.His age;
3.His contract.
That last one will need to be negotiated based on 1 and 2.
He is no longer a 9M,8M or may be even a 4-5M Safety.
He and Eli will likely be asked to re negotiate so they can go full tilt on their signing targeted FAs, both NYFG and non-NYFG, especially in a poor FA class.
It's far from a given that he'll be gone.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/23/2014 11:09 am : link
If another team offers him a lot of guaranteed money, he'll be gone. That is all. I think Reese will be quite happy to pay 'Trel very well, on a year-to-year, pay-as-you-go basis.
He is

Rolle is a FA after this year. No need to renegotiate.
Wouldn't mind seeing him play CB over Fenner
#10* : 10/23/2014 11:49 am : link
That's what he was originally drafted for.

Did you not watch the Cowboys end our season last year with Rolle being forced to play the slot?
Rolle was moved to S for a number reasons
JonC : 10/23/2014 12:18 pm : link
Being a below average CB was one of them.
.
arcarsenal : 10/23/2014 12:22 pm : link
Rolle isn't a good CB and he hates playing there because he knows it.

Not to mention if you move him off S, we have... 0 good safeties.
Move Rolle to CB?
kmed : 10/23/2014 12:24 pm : link
He wasn't a good CB when he was young, you think he's going to be a good one in his late 30's? NO thanks.
Let's not forget...
2ndroundKO : 10/23/2014 12:32 pm : link
There were idiots who thought he would get cut this past offseason. Rolle will be here next year.
Rolle is still a quality Safety
JoeyBigBlue : 10/23/2014 1:18 pm : link
He's a FA after this season and will be looking for one last pay day. The only way he'll be here is if he takes significant pay cut, which he probably won't want to. He'll test Free Agency and find more money elsewhere.
It's not hard to guess the kind of offer the Giants would make him.
Enoch : 10/23/2014 1:33 pm : link
It'll be, as Blogger said above, a healthy salary, but with very little in the way of guarantees or long-term security.

The wildcard is whether any of the other 31 teams would be willing to give Rolle a better offer.
I don't think they'll be a huge market for him
BillT : 10/23/2014 1:37 pm : link
A reasonable offer might keep him here even before FA. He already got his big payday. At his age, he knows he's not getting a bigger offer than the last time.

Possibly, but you could have said the same thing about Justin Tuck a year ago.
I didnt mean move him perm but i'd rather see

Rolle on Dez Bryant than Fenner.
The Raiders

Will always be there to offer money...

And I probably did!
Take Rolle off this defense, and we have no safety
Geeman : 10/23/2014 4:42 pm : link
He'll be back, He's still very productive and a leader. I'm sure he'll be back next season at fair market.

Thanks for the correction. I tried to wrap up Trel and Eli into same term, and missed.
Antrell is very under-appreciated
gersh : 10/24/2014 8:12 am : link
He plays like he's 25, plays hard, plays hurt and is without question one of the guys that makes other guys practice and play hard. You need guys like Rolle on your team.

Also, we are so weak at safety - letting him walk will also be a problem.

That said - he's 31 (32 in December), and has an even higher opinion of himself that I do. He's the kind of guy the Giants lock up before he hits the market, but he may want too much and the market will likely be down for a 32 year old Safety.

Ultimately, I think the Giants will value him more than other teams and I will be very surprised if he isn't in blue next year - especially if TC is back

32 is late 30's these days?
despite his contributions
bc4life : 10/26/2014 5:17 am : link
he is 32.

and re: the Dallas game last year - many of those catches were Dez Bryant - if you keep Dez under 100 yards and 1 TD, you've done a pretty good job.

But yeah, he's not a corner.
They need to keep
Jon in NYC : 10/26/2014 9:07 am : link
him as a locker room presence, as strange as that would have sounded two years ago.

They already need one safety, adding another hole wouldn't help matters.
