NFT: Islanders-Bruins 7pm Game Thread

pganut : 10/23/2014 4:55 pm
Well, the big news for today...Colin McDonald HAS cleared waivers and assigned to BPT (I know, whew!).

As you know, the 'Ders has been called up, so he plugs right in tonight.

Likely forwards tonight:
Conacher-Tavares-Okposo
Lee-Nelson-Strome
Kulemin-Nielsen-Bailey
Martin-Cizikas-TBD

We have the return of Viz tonight, but are now down a Hamonic. So, the D will likely look like this:

Leddy-Boychuk
Hickey (plus 24 stitches or so)-Viz
deHaan-Strait

Chad Johnson gets the start in net, and Nik Svedberg gets the nod for the Bruins.

Also, below is a link to a nice article in USA Today about my and feelflows' mancrush, Brock Nelson.

Your meters may overload
You can rest at the side of the road
You can miss a stride
But nobody gets a free ride

Brock Nelson quietly becoming key forward for Islanders - ( New Window )
Let's go Bruins!

Now that Lee is up,
marbles : 10/23/2014 5:09 pm : link
the next item I want to have checked off is pulling Conacher off the top line.
Curious
Metnut : 10/23/2014 5:09 pm : link
to see how Viz and Lee look tonight.

If the 2nd line clicks well, I'd leave that line together and put Grabo on line 1 when he comes back. Let Conacher and Martin fight it out for the last active spot.
metnut
Dave M : 10/23/2014 5:17 pm : link
I like that. Grabovski on L1 could be nice.
thanks PG!
feelflows : 10/23/2014 5:19 pm : link
I agree about Conacher... I think Bailey replaces him by next game. I like the 2nd line!!

Grabovski is close, and Grabner isn't TOO far away..things will get shuffled soon. Good problems to have.

I love the talking of shit
feelflows : 10/23/2014 5:22 pm : link
I'd do it in Rangers threads more if a good chunk of their fans didn't cry like pre-menopausal Jets fans.
Hearing that Viz's return
pganut : 10/23/2014 5:25 pm : link
Means Fransie not on PP1 anymore, to reduce his load as Nielsen plays both PP and PK. Might not be tonight as Viz is just getting his sea legs back, but will be the case in the future. Also, Lee likely to replace Conacher on PP2.

Haha yeah, the core of Islanders fans here and the core of Rangers fans there are great with it. But since the Rangers have many more fans, you get a good chunk on their end who bitch and whine. Not a knock on Greg, Brett, Davisian, arc, etc. They're all great. Anak is a very knowledgable fan and I enjoy reading his take, but for some reason he gets his panties really twisted at trash talk.

But yes, I enjoy it, too. I just particularly liked Brett's in this case. Not a moment to breathe before jumping right into the fire.

We have 5-7 massive vagina's who are responsible for most of the whining.
And shit, compared to the baseball threads on this site
Mike in Long Beach : 10/23/2014 5:27 pm : link
The hockey ones are pure anarchy. Baseball fans on both sides here are VERY sensitive young men.
That's because baseball isn't really a sport.

I mean...
feelflows : 10/23/2014 5:30 pm : link
the Rangers proved how hard it is to buy a championship.. they could only do it once despite decades of out spending every team.

now they are doing it right, and they were one starting goalie away from winning it all!! I still think someone should've nancy kerrigan'd Quick's knees before game 1... given them a chance, at least.

The salary cap was the best thing for us, ironically.

And we realized defense matters a bit.

*rages*

I'm a bit disappointed both teams have their backups in tonight. Really like watching Rask.
baseball threads are weak compared
feelflows : 10/23/2014 5:34 pm : link
I LOVE the Mets threads, but damn.. it's hard to read sometimes. You try and get into real discussions and nothing but these overblown stats are thrown at you and it kills the real talk.

"Wow, what a play!!" "Well..according the the WAR and the analytics, that play has a 50% return ratio which makes this player average"..

best baseball players are hockey nuts.. screw stats.
Bruins fan here...

Hoping that being so thin on defense won't come back to bite us in the ass. I wasn't big on trading Johnny B over to the Islanders in the 1st place, less so now.

^^
pganut : 10/23/2014 6:32 pm : link
That's a requirement, especially for us old-timers.

I caught the Ledecky/Malkin presser and media scrum afterwards...they seem like well-intentioned, genuine guys. Ledecky...you can't wipe the smile off his face. He's apparently attended every game this year and interacts with fans at the games to ensure the fan experience moving forward is every bit as important as putting a good team on the ice. They know they have a bit of a learning curve as full owners and are grateful to Wang for the two year phase-in. Ledecky loves that the team is young and that they don't know anything else than to work hard, praised the "lunchpail mentality" most of the team has. They came across as very excited, earnest, and concerned for the fans that they put a great product out, both in amenities and team quality. They won't be lacking to spend money when the opportunities arise. Feel like we've been there before, but this time seems different. Is that what real hope feels like?
if I had ever been here before I would probably know just what to do..
feelflows : 10/23/2014 6:40 pm : link

Great game so far. The effort is there tonight. Hickey in particular having a nice game. Conacher playing great Defense against Tavares tonight. 3 times he has collided with JT. I like Johnson.
Bailey took a slash on his hand

Dave
pganut : 10/23/2014 8:45 pm : link
Good observation on Hickey. Right after jumping into the slot for an offensive chance, he busted it back down ice to break up a play on the defensive end. He's really developing into a nice defenseman, showing why the Kings drafted him at #4 overall.
Bailey
pganut : 10/23/2014 8:47 pm : link
Out for the rest of the game.
I'm stuck
Metnut : 10/23/2014 8:47 pm : link
at work but keeping an eye on the game. Looks like we're controlling the play.

Any thoughts on how Viz and Lee look?
Viz is expectedly a bit rusty
pganut : 10/23/2014 8:50 pm : link
And a bit tentative, IMO, but has done nothing to hurt us. In fact, he's QBing the PP and Boychuk looks to be moved to PP2 (not sure I like that). Lee looks good. Getting that big frame in front of the net and agitating. He'll fit right into the style this team is playing.
yeah Lee's presence is known
Dave M : 10/23/2014 9:08 pm : link
In this game although he hasn't made the shore sheet. Viz hasn't been bad either. Kulemin playing on L1. Just imagine Nelsen on L1. One of the attributes about Grabovski is that he's a good fo guy. Naturally we put him at wing. Why not let Grabovski and Kulemin play together with Strome and put Nelsen and his skill set, which is perfect with JT, with JT and KO?
wow
Dave M : 10/23/2014 9:13 pm : link
How was that not a slash
Would love Nelson on L1
pganut : 10/23/2014 9:14 pm : link
But L2 of Lee-Nelson-Strome is a nice line and Cappy likes having 4 quality centers. Kulemin>Conacher on L1 for sure. Grabbo is the wild card key when he returns. Grabbo-Kulie-Strome was nice to start the season. I never thought I'd say this, but Bailey on L1 with JT and KO would actually be sweet.

No slash call for the whack on Conacher, and now the Bs score?
and naturally
Dave M : 10/23/2014 9:14 pm : link
The Bruins score seconds later

pganut : 10/23/2014 9:34 pm : link
What an ending...nice win, boys. Johnson is legit. Glad to have Viz back. Could have been more than 3-2 if not for the iron. Hickey had a nice game. D gets better when Hammer is back. Clutterbuck, Fransie and Kulemin in particular had strong games from the forward position. And it was nice to give up less than 3 goals. Keep it going against Dallas.

Bailey was injured by hit along boards, not Kelly slash. Seeing a specialist tomorrow. #Isles are hopeful it's shorter than 4 wk recovery.

Also, lines in today's skate:

They like Kulemin's creativity and tenacity combined with the skill of 91 and 21. I'm willing to see what it looks like. However, I think Grabbo could be very interesting with those 2. I could see some sweet things out of that combination. But putting him with Fransie is also a pretty safe place. Nice to have options.
