To hide weapons in all rooms. Easy access can one day save your life.
Probably true in some places, but I always have to wonder whether people who say such things apply the same belief to things more likely to save your life: smoke detectors (frequently checked for battery life), fire extinguishers (replaced when expired), epi pens, defibrillators, etc. And I wonder if these people pursue and refresh CPR and basic first aid knowledge as passionately.

Ah, no it is not a good idea. In Florida, if a kid gets a weapon and somebody gets hurt, you go to jail. In fact, it basically has to be double locked up (extraordinary care? iirc) to prove you took more than reasonable precautions to prevent accidents.

I do. But that's what I did. You need everything in your home that is to be an expected emergency in your home. My defibrillator is inserted in my chest thank you.
Between kids, people, cats, dogs, pigeons, and horses, there aint to much I don't have in stock.

A stun gun is a weapon, a baton is a weapon, pepper spray is a weapon.
Guns are weapons too but in a safe place without a round in the chamber, and gun saftey taught to all in the household, everyone in my family know the drill. Everyone has been to the range and know self defense too. I also have a great dog and home alarm.
Air vents, back of stereo speakers,in a box off cereal, fan vents, light fixtures, places people don't look or think about looking. A gun safe is nice but you have to be able to get to it in time. It's a chance you take but I'd rather have a plan than be at the mercy of someone else.
but if you have young people around (and realistically even if you don't) you're much safer taking your chances with locked doors and maybe an alarm system than stashing weapons around your house. Properly secured weapons, sure. You might have some notice, you might be able to retrieve them. But unsecured, loaded weapons? Not around young people.
Wife and myself? Know where there is a reachable weapon in each room and building.
Of course I have gated fenced property.
No offense but your community sounds like a terrifying place to live. Gated, fenced property and weapons within reach in every room and building? You're not a Colombian drug lord are you?
I plan on someday owning a gun again but keeping it unloaded, trigger locked, and in a safe. Even on the farm my family keeps the guns with trigger locks on them in one safe and the ammo in another. I can understand having guns for protection but that sounds like a lot of available weapons.

LOL
No fence is to keep the horses, dogs and whatever livestock I happen to be raising at the time, on the property. Gate, well I have to get through the fence to get to the house some how. I do have to say that since putting in the gate, random people coming an knocking on the door for this or that reason has ceased.
Shouldn't have said I have a gun in every room. It's an open floor plan so actually 2 rooms. One in the bedroom and gun safe in my office. Literally within 20 steps anywhere in the house. An old rifle down in the barn for rats and snakes. Usually a shotgun behind the seat of the truck used when training bird dogs.
Is far as I know, there has been one robbery in my immediate area in the passed 20 years. One of the few ungated properties around. He put a gate in after the fact.

Lol, that sounds reasonable. I read your post and was wrongly thinking of a completely different situation than what you just described.
Definitely. Talk about destroying your peace of mind. Hopefully the grandfather and the girl are okay and the two surviving shitheads die in prison.
Hope he and his GD are ok...

Absolutely
It's better to be hurt by someone you know accidentally, than by a stranger on purpose - ( New Window )
Also, why do they need to point out that they escaped in the grandfather's "gold cadillac"?

Florida has a concealed weapons permit. Means I can have a lot of other weapons than a gun.
Knife, brass knuckles, club, etc.

Nah
It's the culture your used too.
It's fun to put forth a scenario with basic facts and watch how our individual perceived assumptions paint the rest of the picture.
The 67-year-old grandfather managed to grab a gun and shot all three of the suspects.

I saw an updated report that said he "retrieved" a gun.
He did. Killed one and wounded the other two.
