NFT: Steve Nash may be forced to retire

DanMetroMan : 10/23/2014 9:28 pm

Steve Nash is expected to miss all of the 2014-15 season because of nerve damage to his back, according to the team..
Wow. Nash has already suffered a back injury reportedly from carrying a bag, and there was never really a chance he'd be able to make it through the year unscathed. Sadly, his career might be over, but he'll be a first-ballot Hall of Fame player without a doubt. Jeremy Lin is a terrific target in the later rounds while Ronnie Price is a lock to make the team. If the Lakers start losing, rookie Jordan Clarkson will get in the mix.

That's too bad. Great player,

and seemed to be a really good dude. Had a long career, though, not too many PG's get to play into their 40's.

A shame. One of my favorite pro athletes. Just seems like a cool guy as well as a great point guard.
Damn, it wasn't that long ago that the Knicks

were a dick-hair away from getting Nash (or at least pursuing him really hard). Knicks dodged a bullet on that one.
One of my favorite

players in his prime. Amazing that someone with such little athletism had a run as one of the NBAs best players.

I disagree that Nash had little athleticism. He was a fantastic athlete. He may not have had the size or leaping ability of other NBA players, but he was a great ahtlete. He had phenomenal body control, coordination with both hands and his entire body, balance, and efficiency of movement. He also had great touch with his passes and shots and he had a ton of endurance. All of these things made him a great athlete, just in a different way than many other basketball players.

It was the combination of these skills that caused him to be a very talented junior hockey player (IIRC) and was a very good soccer player (son and brother of pros).
hall of famer, obviously

From a historic draft full of hof'ers

I wouldnt have voted him MVP either of the 2 times he won it, but its a hell of an accomplishment. One of the best offensive players of all time. Led some of the most efficient offenses of all time in phoenix, teams who had a big impact on changing the way the game is played now, especially the way they attacked with the 3 ball. One of the weirdest career trajectories of all time in the nba, certainly the most unlikely multi time mvp ever. Was basically considered a bust early. Evolved into an all star in dallas, who let him walk anyway, then winds up under dantoni and the rest is history

He was open about the fact that literally the only reason he came back this year was for a paycheck. So im not surprised if this whole bag carrying thing is a wink wink between he and the team.

"Nash grew up playing soccer—he stated in a 2005 interview that he could have played professionally if he had focused on it[108]—and continues to hold an interest in the sport. When Dirk Nowitzki arrived in the NBA from Germany, he and Nash became close friends, in part because they enjoyed watching soccer together. Nash is friends with several professional soccer players, including Alessandro Del Piero, Thierry Henry, Owen Hargreaves, Massimo Ambrosini and Steve McManaman.[109] During his off-season, when he lives in New York City, he has trained with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer,[110] and once tried to arrange a pick-up game in the city's Central Park with the Red Bulls and one of his local teams.[111]"

He's been seen around NYC playing pickup soccer games or training with pros during the NBA offseason. I don't know if he's planning to stay in NYC if his career is over, but he fit right in here.

for him. Fantastic career if it's over. First ballot HOF inductee. Great guy as well.
96 draft
MarshallOnMontana : 10/24/2014 9:33 am : link
Kobe bryant
Steve nash
allen iverson
ray allen

All no brainer hof players

peja stojackovic in that same draft also has a great shot to make the hall with the way they grade foreign players on a curve. It would actually be a huge shock if he doesnt given he was way more accomplished than some of the euros in

jermaine oneal was a perennial all star for a period

marcus camby was a defensive player of the year and had an excellent career

shareef abdur rahim was an all star caliber player for a time

stephon marbury may be a punchline now, but for a time was one of the most talented pgs in the nba

antoine walker a multi time all star

Zydrunas ilgauskis was going to be a beast before his foot injuries, and as is his number hangs in the rafters in cleveland

Bunch of high level role players too. Derek fisher was in this draft. Tony delk, who had a 50 point game on the resume' was in this draft. Junkyard dog jerome williams in this draft.

not only that, but if he hadn't re-upped with Phoenix prior to the summer of 2010 we'd probably have given him a 5 year max deal or close to it.
Nash lives in TriBeCa, is often spotted around SoHo

and has been trying to work himself into the film biz at different levels, from what I gather. He's a regular dude, I met him the same week that Gandolfini passed away, playing hoops near BMCC with some local dudes.

He got in great shape for this season, but all bets are off when you've hit 40.
when i think of the knicks and nash connections

I think of how often new york was rumored to trade for him early in his dallas career where he was considered a massive disappointment, basically a bust. It never came to fruition, but he was always rumored to come here

i wonder how different his career unfolds if it did happen. Playing for coaches like don nelson in dallas and dantoni in phoenix fit him like a glove
He's been living in NYC during offseasons for about ten years

I would have kept him if i was dallas, but in fairness to them its not like the move killed them. They did keep cranking out 50 plus win seasons every year, won a title and should have won 2 after they let him walk

It worked out for nash in the end too. His career skyrocketed in phoenix. He may not have won a ring, but he became a legendary player, rather than just an all star. Their athletes and that pace was just a perfect fit, they handed him total control of the team and he hit a level no one thought he had. I dont think it ever happens to that degree for him in dallas.
Nash is 40 and was NOT going to contribute anything this year
Stan from LA : 10/24/2014 1:30 pm : link
So no loss, but the Lakers are God-Awful and it'll be nice to see Laker fans pound sand for the next decade while the Clippers rule.
I think that assessment from MoM was perfect
Andy in Halifax : 10/24/2014 1:42 pm : link
Nash at Phoenix was a perfect fit of his skills and athletes & coaching system. He'd never have the career he had if he stays in Dallas. I do find it interesting that d'Antoni won 70% of his games with Nash but only 40% without him. As easy as it is to say Nash was a product of the d'Antoni system, perhaps its more accurate to say d'Antoni's success was a result of Steve Nash. More likely just a good fit for the both of them.

Loved watching him play basketball. Very entertaining. Up there with Magic, Jordan & Lebron as players that were a lot of fun to watch.
