I love Mike Carey for not blowing the Tyree Catch dead before Eli had his shot, but holy crap, he is always wrong as an analyst for CBS. I'm not sure I've seen him accurately predict an official review all season.
I'm also not sure what it says about the state of NFL officiating when the networks bring in experts, Carey was a top official for years, and they are just as confused as the rest of us.
I think the Randle "football move" TD is an example of where fans thought what he said was gibberish, but he actually cited the applicable rule correctly. (He said it was a timing play in which the refs had to determine whether the receiver had the ball long enough to make a football move).
I've observed a few times that fans don't understand what the "experts" are saying...because they don't really know the rules themselves.
Pretty sure he fucked up in the grasp, too, but I'll let him slide for that one:)

Nowhere in the rule, is it stated, how long, "long enough", is....

no it is not. not sure whey this detracts from Carey's explanation, however. It rather goes to the issue of whether such a rule could be administered effectively.
As a ref he was fine, now...
Yikes!
Yup, I was thinking the same thing as Carey was explaining it. Why was he focused so much on the elbow when the forearm went fown first, which makes the player down by contact. That was as close of a fumble/non-fumble that I've ever seen, though.
