Happy 88th Birthday Y.A. Tittle

Defenderdawg : 10/24/2014 10:59 am
After the ESPN story this summer, it may not be the best of times, but he is still very much with us...

Born: October 24, 1926 in Marshall, TX (Age 88.000)
High School: Marshall
College: LSU (school history)
Drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 1st round (6th overall) of the 1948 NFL Draft.

Peyton Manning with Bob Costas 10-20-2014
Manning: “I met Y.A. Tittle a number of times. That great picture of him on his knees, bloodied, tells you how tough he was. From what I studied, he was ahead of his time. He threw for seven touchdowns in a game. He was a special quarterback."

From 9-23-2014 Tittle attends dedication ceremony
"MARSHALL — Friends, family and fans of Marshall’s own, Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Y.A. Tittle, attended a ceremony for the naming of the Y.A. Tittle Field House on Tuesday afternoon.

"As the crowd enjoyed food and drinks, Tittle addressed those who approached him. He, like his daughter, said he was overwhelmed.
“This is a great honor,” Tittle said. “It made a grown man cry. I’m so glad to be here. It’s a great honor to be back.”

"Surrounded by close friends and family, Tittle was all smiles. The community showed their appreciation for his hard work and prosperous career.

Today he said he's not the best with names but feels like he's still can go out and perform."

Wickersham ESPN: As Y.A. Tittle's memory fades and his body breaks down, the Hall of Fame QB finds fleeting moments of solace in a daughter's love and a final trip home.

I have a copy of the photo on the wall in my den. Look at it every day. What a tough and great QB. Many fond memories of his playing years with the Giants.

is the very reason i'm a Giants fan. I was a young boy watching football and this guy just threw some really long bombs. larger than life he was ;0
That photo has double meaning for me ….

No doubt, it is iconic and famous in NFL symbolism, but as a long-time NY Giants fan it's a very tragic reminder of the end of a magnificent career.

In '63 Y.A. & the Giants were on top of the world; in '64 they disintegrated and were not the same for 26 painful & frustrating years.

Thus, it wasn't only Y.A. that beaten down and bloodied, it was the entire team and it's fans.

Ironically, that famous Y.A. photo joins the Chuck Bednarik photo as probably the two most recognizable in the history of the NFL ...
