NFT: Mets Fans: Aroldis Chapman

Hello Fellow Mets Fans!

As the 2014 season nears the end and with hot stove baseball around the corner, I wanted to throw out a potential trade target that has not been discussed and which might be intriguing.

The Cincinnatti Reds are a franchise in distress, they have a lot of large contracts in players underproducing - Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, Brnadon Phillips, and Homer Bailey to name a few. Their minor league system is average at best and they might be looking to unload some payroll and start rebuilding. I don't see how they can't look to start some rebuilding process considering the players they have and the lack of talent at the minor league level.

That brings me to Aroldis Chapman, the premiere closer in baseball today along with Craig Kimbrel. If there is one thing in common among all the teams in the post-season this year, they have all had great bullpens - Nationals, Royals, Gians, As, Orioles all had great pens. I think the Mets are on the verge of having our Pen be a great strength, but we don't have a great closer. Mejia, Familia, Parnell all have a lot of talent and the ability to close, but you add a chapman to the back of our pen and I think it could really make our backend dynamite.

Now, from Cincinnati's perspective, they can't be in a win-now mode and they might want to take advantage of a strong market for a player like chapman, especially since he's under contract for only 2 more seasons and since what good is a closer if you're not gonna win.

Now, according to baseball-reference, he had a 1.9 WAR in 2014 and averaged around 2.5 WAR over the last 3 years. My question to you is, would he be a good target? and what could we get him for that seattle wants. I think we could get him for Herrera and Montero...would you do that trade?
Cincny is not moving Chapman for Montero/Herrera

and besides, why in the world would the Mets expend valuable assets for a closer...hardly a position of need. Mejia did a good job in the role & Familia is capable of doing it, too.

Closer is not a need.

I think we already have our closer.. and I think it's Familia, not Mejia. Those 2 guys will probably eventually get flipped. Or maybe Mejia will be the 7th inning guy and Black will be the 8th inning guy.

In any event, I don't think we need to be giving up assets for Chapman. If I were going to start talking about pieces with the Reds, Bruce is the guy I'd be asking about. Can't see any reason why they'd sell low on him, though.
Closer is probably

close to the last thing on the list of needs the Mets have.

Between Mejia, Parnell, and Familia, they have options. Even if they're not Kimbrell or Chapman.

the Cards won WS with mediocre closers as did other teams and I think all 3 above options are better than mediocre.

the Mets need to be judicious with their resources and fill the bigger holes first (SS, LF, etc.) before improving a strength.

all valid points

but we have a glut at 2B, we have up and coming prospects in the outfield in Nimmo/Conforto and we can sign a guy like Cuddyer as a stopgap. I just look at some of the great bullpens this year and can't help but dream what a dynamic bullpen that features chapman, familia, mejia, black, and parnell. Games would be done by the 6th and we would hedge agianst major injuries. Mariano was dynamite and help make the yankee dynasty. The Royals would not be in the WS without their bullpen...If not Chapman, i'd seriously consider pursuing andrew miller. I want a dynamic lefthanded reliever out of our pen.

Your pen is a lot more important when you've got leads to protect.

Unless the Mets upgrade their lineup, there aren't going to be enough of those leads to matter and they won't be in the postseason anyway.

scored 22 less runs than the royals this year, .13 runs per game more, and they're in the world series. How many one-run games have we lost the last couple of years. I am a big believer in the bullpen. Why can't we upgrade our outfield and the bullpen too? If not Chapman, how about Andrew Miller?
Think about how valuable

Betances was to the Yanks. I don' know, but the more I think about it, the more I love the idea. That's just me.

How many games did our pen blow after the Valverde/Farnsworth disasters were over, though? I'm guessing probably not a ton.

I just don't think our pen is an issue. Plus, we've got so much young pitching you'll probably see a few more of these guys become BP arms.

And the Yankees went nowhere this year because they couldn't score runs. So it didn't matter how great Betances was.
This would be one of the worst

uses of resources in Mets history.

they had a top 10, top 15 at worst bullpen last year.

It is a strength, so your plan is to use valuable trade chips to strengthen a strength instead of filling a hole.

How is that a good idea?

the Mets are not going anywhere without another legit bat
chris r : 10/24/2014 1:09 pm : link
any expenditure of assets must be towards that end this offseason.
Unfortunately, Mets are stuck with Granderson
oipolloi : 10/24/2014 4:19 pm : link
So I don't really see where they would acquire a bat. SS and LF are really the only positions open, and the mets are probably better off sticking Flores at SS and going with a platoon of young guys in LF. Spending money for mediocre bats at those positions would be a waste of their limited resources.

Unless they are willing to spend to acquire a legit middle of the order bat, which I highly doubt, I'd rather see them go with what they have and save the salary room for adding a player at the trade deadline if they are in serious contention.
How many "legitimate" bats
Headhunter : 10/24/2014 4:54 pm : link
do the Giants and Royals have? Buster Posey and a bunch of JAGS in this WS. Pitching & Defense & Speed, that's another story
The hell with Chapman.
Section331 : 10/24/2014 6:13 pm : link
Joey Votto please?
IMHO the Mets have 4 problem positions.....
Phil in Joisey : 10/24/2014 6:20 pm : link
Shortstop, leftfield, 3rd base, rightfield......Closer is not on the list.
I realize they're stuck with long-term contracts with Wright and Granderson so they'll be in the line-up every day, but any trades or free agentry must deal with short and left, not closer.
Relievers
DanMetroMan : 10/24/2014 6:33 pm : link
and investing big in them via $$ or trades is a fools game. Almost never works out. The Mets should be looking at guys like Tim Collins not trading for big name relievers.
And
DanMetroMan : 10/24/2014 6:34 pm : link
I know you were just throwing names out there but Phillips is signed through 2017 so Herrera wouldn't make a ton of sense for the Reds.
I

believe this is Daniel Murphy's final .5/1 season as a Met and that Herrera will be the starting 2b shortly. I'd deal almost anyone but that's a lot of value for a 1 inning guy. I'm "more okay" with trading some of these young guys than some people on here but reliever wouldn't be my target at all. In fact, if they insist on spending on the pen I'd offer Gregerson the 2 for 15 they reportedly offered Balfour
