NFT: Dallas Stars @ New York Islanders Game Thread

pganut : 10/25/2014 10:54 am
Since Saturday night's alright for fighting, I figured it was okay to post an early game thread (between my sons' football game and daughter's event later, I wasn't gonna have much time).

The bad news: no Hamonic tonight, which is really more of a precaution. He fully expects to play in the next game vs. Winnipeg.

Good news: looks like based on the morning skate, Grabbo is back tonight. On another injury note, Grabner may begin skating as early as next week.

Chad Johnson is starting in goal tonight.

D-pairs the same as last game. Note: perhaps just wishful thinking, but with Coburn and AMac on the shelf for Philly, I wonder if Garth might not see if we can pawn off Strait on them (do it, Garth!).

Forwards look to be as follows:
Kulemin-Tavares-Okposo; Grabovski-Nielsen-Conacher; Lee-Nelson-Strome; Martin-Cizikas-Clutterbuck

But dreams don't need
To have motion
To keep their spark alive
Obsession has to have action --
Pride turns on the drive

Nice blurb on Fransie - start your morning with a Danish - ( New Window )
good stuff

Saw that about ocho cinco starting. Interesting, cappy creating competition in net. Grabbo should play pending how he feels after morning skate.
Yes strait is next to go.
With Chara out for an extended time
pganut : 10/25/2014 11:12 am : link
Wonder if that might not be another possible destination for Strait. Not sure there's a market for him, but I'd like to see him elsewhere.
While I agree that Strait has limited value

He did play a very solid game against Boston. It was his best game by far.
on the topic of trades,
marbles : 10/25/2014 11:30 am : link
There are rumors that Edmonton has been discussing trading Eberle. Yes it's just talk, but I wonder what it would take to get a 24 year old primer winger to put with Tavares and Okposo.

That would be a dreamy line one.
Interesting that they are going with Ochocinco
Mike in NY : 10/25/2014 11:52 am : link
He had a strong game against Boston, but Halak is paid to be the starter. That being said, giving Johnson this game does give the Islanders some flexibility for the 4 back-to-backs they have in November if they are trying to give Halak 3-4 straight games in net rather than 1 or 2 on then 1 off
marbles
pganut : 10/25/2014 12:21 pm : link
I've been reading that EDM is losing patience with Yakupov. Eberle would certainly be nice, but I'd definitely be interested to see Yak-JT-KO. But that said, I'd be just as happy to see Nelson or Lee on L1.
Grabbo officially off of IR and playing tonight
pganut : 10/25/2014 12:37 pm : link
But Cappy, just to mess with us, has decided thusly:

Grabovski likely to start w/Nielsen and Kulemin, Conacher starts with Tavares and Okposo.

Love the Grabbo-Fransie-Kulemin line, but I am growing less fond of Conacher by the day.

Bailey officially to IR, retro to 10/23.
I want to see Conacher off the top line
Mike in NY : 10/25/2014 12:48 pm : link
But to swap Conacher with Grabovski or Kulemin does weaken the Nielsen line more than it improves our top line. I hope Anders Lee could develop more defensively so that he could eventually replace Conacher on the top line and then Grabner or Bailey when healthy can be the other wing for Nelson/Strome. I know our top line helps on the PP but with them negative in the +/- it hurts us at even strength

Playwright 35th used to be one of my accounts. They'll definitely have it.

I assume any of the Dallas BBQ's would have it (for the Stars) and I'm sure a bar like 13th Step would put it on for you.

Most bars are pretty accommodating as long as you ask them to put it on and don't demand it

For being a statue on Roussel's goal. Sweet slapper. And now we're buzzing. Hate that it took giving up 3 unanswered to get there, but we need to keep the pressure on, and settle the fuck down on defense. Harmonic coming back will be a blessing.

We were completely dominating but those two bad ones gave Dallas life and they are making us look tired. They need to settle down and stop being cute in our own zone.

Conacher is really holding L1 back and the shifts are way too long.
Nabokov
Mike in NY : 10/25/2014 8:53 pm : link
4 goals allowed on 8 shots in 1st period against Minnesota
Guess our 3rd period strategy
pganut : 10/25/2014 9:11 pm : link
Is to let the team on the tail end of a back to back just tire themselves out by letting them race down into our zone virtually unimpeded. That, and to inexplicably continue to give L4 more even strength playing time than the Lee-Nelson-Strome line.

Cappy also needs to read his coaching manual. The JT and KO shifts are way too long and we are dodging bullets because they're out of gas and overextended. Must be because of picking up all of Conacher's slack. It's basically a two man line.
Is there a team that has a harder time getting it out of the zone

Dave M : 10/25/2014 10:06 pm : link
Dallas is terrible defensively and they dressed their backup. The 5 ga aren't good but take the win. Bring in the jets.
Dallas' first line is impressive.
pganut : 10/25/2014 10:15 pm : link
And KW, I agree that the goaltending will tighten up. And when it does, knowing the offense is definitely capable, it should be interesting to watch. The D pairings should also normalize when Hamonic gets back as you'll have the top 6 in play. Once they rejigger the pairings, that complexion changes (I assume for the better). Get Grabbo's cobwebs out, Grabs back in game shape and Bailey recovered, and there's a deep and talented squad. It's a shame we couldn't start at full strength, but that's reality in the NHL. But it's coming.

All hail to the Danish deity, Fansie. What a nice player.

Kid has skills.

So thinking about this conacher situation. Heres what I'd do.

Put Lee on JTs wing. He is perfect to serve as Moulsons role in front of the net.

Replace Lee with Clutterbuck on the "kid line". I'm not sure why everyone's so against breaking that line up. Like its trotier and bossy.

Conacher on l4

Don't like Clutterbuck on kid line since he slows down the offense. Lee I would like to see improve defensively before moving to L1. If Frans didn't look so great last night I would have put Kulemin or Grabovski on Line 1. Hell when Bailey or Grabner returns I would replace Conacher with either
Conacher could be a L4 candidate
pganut : 10/26/2014 3:42 pm : link
But if paired with Cizikas and Clutter, he doesn't drive possession as much as I'd like and is easily taken off the puck (rationale for my game comment that effectively JT and KO are a 2 man line). But an experiment I could live to see, at least until Bailey and Grabs returns.

Article linked actually makes a good case for Strome on L1. I like the premise. But as I said, when 12 and 40 return, it's an embarrassment of riches and Cappy should be fired if he continues to show blind loyalty to Marts if he keeps him in at the expense of players that are more capable.

Works on L1. I don't see where grabs plays outside of pk.

Watched Nhl network last night. McLennan was drinking the islanders kool aid. Saying our depth here was not created by accident. A long time in the making. When l1 has 1 point and we score 7 goals, this team can be dangerous.

It looked like Carkner was on the ice lol

FYI, I'd have no problem putting Conacher with Cizikas. I think they have some of the same skill sets.

Also, having Clutterbuck on the line with 2 of the kids would give that line some much needed toughness, and it's not like Clutterbuck can't score with some talent around him.

When Bailey/Grabner are back it's easy to sub these guys into lines. That's still a few weeks away.
