Nebraska RB Ameer Abdullah

Big Rick in FL : 10/25/2014 3:00 pm
Do you guys think he is the best RB in college football? Man he looks absolutely awesome today and has for the whole season. Kind of reminds me of Gio Bernard. Dude is a straight up beast. As I'm typing this he busts a 76 yard kick return. I know Gurley is great, but I think Abdullah is as good or possibly better as an all around RB. His stats for the season are disgusting.

178 carries for 1222 yards with 6.9 YPC and 16 rushing TDs. Also has 13 receptions for 169 yards with 13 yards per catch and 2 receiving TDs.

Just bored so I wanted to get other people's opinion on him. How does he stack up to Melvin Gordon, Duke Johnson, TJ Yeldon, Derrick Henry. How high does he go in the draft? Talking to a buddy and he is making it seem like he has 225 yards and 3 TDs because they are playing Rutgers. Well the QB and other 2 RBs have 14 carries for 48 yards. A whopping 3.4 yards per carry.
he's an excellent college player

but he's small. 5'9" about 190. That's not going to get him a first round grade as an every down back in the NFL.

Gimme the 6'1" 205 with room to grow Gordon.
Agree with B

Gordon has it all. I think he's got the most upside at the next level
See I don't think his size
Big Rick in FL : 10/25/2014 3:14 pm : link
Hurts him too much. Yes 190 is very light to play in the NFL. He is similar in size to Gio Bernard and that is who I would compare him to. Gio was 5'8 and 200 at the combine. Ameer should have no problem getting up to around that 200-208 mark.

I would love to see the Giants pick him in the 2nd if he is there, but I doubt it cuz of Jennings and Williams. I think he is going to be a very successful NFL player.

Yes Gordon is also very good. Don't think I could draft him though. Those Wisconsin RBs scare the shit out of me. Yes they have awesome stats, but they have unreal OLines most of the time.
You mentioned it in your OP
dpinzow : 10/25/2014 3:20 pm : link
This is the year you want to pick a RB somewhere in the draft because there are plenty of good ones. Don't think Abdullah will be the best of them at the NFL level but if he pans out he is a lot like Jamaal Charles (not Gio Bernard)
He is a great player and will make an impact at the next level
Patrick77 : 10/25/2014 3:20 pm : link
Him and Duke are roughly the same size and both IMO should raise some serious questions at the next level. Guys that size are more likely to have an impact like David Wilson or Reggie bush in their rookie year. They might not be running through tackles of 250 pound linebackers or blocking those same guys in pass protection. Special teams, receiving, and certain packages they could/should excel in early on. Neither would come in and be the bell cow early on IMO.
Jennings

Is a short term solution for a couple seasons. We will need to draft another RB soon. You need to cycle in new RBs every couple seasons now in the NFL.

Smart man.
I would hate to spend a first rounder on a RB
illmatic : 10/25/2014 4:22 pm : link
Their effective lifespan in the NFL is way too short and it's not like we have nothing there at the position right now. Spend a high pick elsewhere. This OL isn't very good and the WRs won't be much better with Cruz returning from injury and Randle potentially gone. Not that they'll take a WR first again but I'd rather do that than RB if all things were equal. Then of course they need all kinds of help on defense. So the RB discussions are always silly to me.
It is a passing league
Steve in South Jersey : 10/25/2014 4:44 pm : link
I don't like taking a RB that high. Draft OL, DE, or safety in the top couple of rounds.

Ideally, I'd look for some more help on OL, but I'm not sure there's going to be similar talent in this upcoming class compared to last season. I'd usually advise against taking a RB in round 1, but I think this year is an exception. This is a great class for RBs.
I don't like a RB in the 1st
Big Rick in FL : 10/25/2014 6:12 pm : link
I'd have no problem taking a guy in the 2nd round though. Probably can get some of these guys in the 3rd or 4th round with all the RB talent this year. Gurley, Gordon, Abdullah, Duke, Karlos Williams, Mike Davis and many more.
Don't know much about him
Big Rick in FL : 10/25/2014 6:40 pm : link
The RB for Mississippi State has been a fucking beast today. Good lord. His run last drive was awesome. Broke 7 or 8 tackles on one play.
Nebraska RBs are historically over rated
Jupiter : 10/25/2014 8:50 pm : link
Usually run behind a huge offensive line and end up being one-cut runners.
not remotely

close to being a great NFL RB.

Basically its Gurley and everyone else this year.

Gurley? He's been great the last three games. I agree!

Gurley and everyone else? Haha, laughable.

Gordon is every bit as good (probably better) and in many people's opinion is the better pro prospect. Gurley gets more exposure because of the SEC love fest in the media, but Gordon is an absolute stud
The people who say the NFL is a passing league
InTikiITrust : 10/26/2014 9:38 am : link
yes, but you need the threat of the run or teams will sell out. Go watch the Eagles game again for proof.
Gordon
BigBlueCane : 10/26/2014 10:20 am : link
is another in the long line of overrated Badger RB's. Remember Wisconsin hasn't faced the only B1G team with a defense this year, Michigan State.

Not the case. I wanted nothing to do with Montee or James White for this team, or even John Clay if you go back a few years.

Melvin is a different story. The kid is special. While UW hasn't played MSU, Melvin put up 16 for 140 against LSU, and this is while facing 9 in the box, because we have quite likely the worst passing attack in all of FBS.

The idea that because former players at a particular school didn't have success in the NFL, it's indicative of a current players future fortunes is even more laughable.
LSU
BigBlueCane : 10/26/2014 5:32 pm : link
was not particularly good this year. Yes I understand that Wisconsin can only play who they play but I would remain highly skeptical about Gordon's ability given his level of competition.

And yes the school bias myth holds true because there's truth in it. That's why you don't draft Alabama defensive players because Saban has already maxed them out in college.
There's truth in it?
BigBlueShock : 10/26/2014 5:43 pm : link
Lololololol. If you'd sit down and think about that for just a second, you'd realize how stupid that is.

But maybe not. Yeah, the guy before him wasn't any good, so he won't be any good! Cause they went to the same college! Haha, classic. And right, NFL teams steer clear of Alabama defensive players because Nick Saban destroys them. Holy shit....
By the way
BigBlueShock : 10/26/2014 5:51 pm : link
You do realize that Georgia rushed for 210 yards against Mizzouri and 207 this week against Arkansas, both WITHOUT Gurley?
