NFT: Modern Car Head Restraints - Too Far Forward

Rick5 : 10/25/2014 5:37 pm
I have a '14 Camry and if I sit with good posture and a straight seat back, the head restraint pushes my head forward and down. Awful. After hunting around a bit, I see that this is a common complaint on the net. It seems to apply to cars from '11 forward. The idea is to reduce the likelihood of whiplash, but man this sucks. Does anyone else find these newer head restraints unbearable? Unfortunately, I haven't found any great solutions on the net other than turning the head restraint around. That works, but obviously it isn't the best idea in the world in the event of an accident. Has anyone found a good solution?
No solution

I hate it too. To make it worse, I am short so my head gets pushed forward even more. When I'm driving, I don't really rest my head on the head rest. But if I'm a passenger, it really bothers me. I had a car accident 2 years ago where I was rear ended. I only had mild whiplash (which was bad enough) but I had a concussion from my head whacking into the head rest. Not sure which is worse.
My wife just takes it right off or makes it too high to touch her head

Me and my wife both have '13 model years. I haven't seen this scenario, but sounds terrible. My Genesis Coupe actually has anti-whiplash head restraint protection in that I think they tilt forward in the event of a rear collision, but they are normal and comfortable otherwise.

If I were you guys I'd look into switching them out with an older model year of your cars from the junkyard or see how much they are new. Check measurements for fitment of course. There are probably aftermarket ones with DVD players, too. Maybe there are aftermarket ones without. If not there probably will be soon. If there are enough complaints the aftermarket should grow, but hopefully they do a recall or something.
Looks like the '14 Camry has active head restraint, too.

Might want to be careful and really look into any option other than leaving them alone.

You can buy other cars' headrests and swap out yours.
Thanks,

I know I am a bit of a idiot in things sometimes.
But with my 2014 Suburu I had the same problem basically, the head restraint just seemed off. I didn't really do much to it and moved the basic adjustments and thought this was just how it is.

Finally I spent a bit of time with it and found the proper way to adjust the thing( I forget if I actually read the manual on that(I would never admit to that anyway).

Problem now solved. Just me probably not you, but I though I may mention it.
Hey, Ron.

Thanks. My manual has little info (just instructions on how move them up or down or take them off). It does show "proper" placement of the head restraints with a graphic of absolutely horrible posture. The seat is reclined and the head is pushed forward in the graphic (exactly what I am trying to avoid). I read a post online that said that the design was based on the assumption that the average American slumps. I haven't hunted around to see if that is really true or not, but damn, judging from the image in my owner's manual, it just may be true!

This is Subaru not your make, it is however a 2014, but I took a bit of time now to take a look at the passengers seat one(not the drivers I'm sacred to touch that one as it is now correct);)

The whole head rest part it has two adjustments but then the whole thing if you push on it with your hand hard towards the top of it but against the back of the headrest(you have to sit in the back seat to do that) it pushes forward, towards the front of the car. Then if you push it even more, it comes to a point when it seems to click, you let go, and then it come back to its furthest point back, I guess there is some spring in it.

Likely it will not work the same as they are different models and all but it may be worth a try. :)

You are lucky! I should have bought a Subaru. Mine just goes up and down. That's it.
