NFT: A sign of inteligent Knick management (finally!)

PhilSimms15 : 10/26/2014 10:37 am
Its been reported in a number of outlets that the Knicks will cut Travis Outlaw eating his $3m contract and will keep Travis Wear.

Now, I have no idea whether Wear will turn out to be more than a 10th or 11th bench guy in the NBA, but Outlaw has been done for years.

And its a reminder of how the Knicks last season opened with Chris Smith on their roster; a guy who was clearly not an NBA player; and they were laughed at by many for making such a dumb (JR's brother) decision.

The Knick season will likely be lots of ups and downs, maybe an eigth playoff spot, but I feel like they are on a positive path.

Knicks mgmt are doing things right

They will need to hit a few personnel HRs over the next calendar year or so in order to become an elite team but if they fail it won't be due to lack of effort, preparation and due diligence. They will have money to spend and a first round pick. They also have a super star player in place and a few young players and assets. They haven't had this kind of opportunity since right around the time Pat Riley came in and changed the culture. Let's hope Phil, Fischer and Melo can work some magic here. I'm excited.

The young player I really have my eyes on is Larkin. I'm praying he can develop into a legit back court player.
Larkin

according to reports, the Knicks may not pick up the third year of his contract. That would be disappointing, if true, in the sense that it means that they have concluded he isn't going to be good enough to become a high quality backup point guard.

Wear has skills, but he needs to spend time in the weight room.
Wear

is a really nice fit in the triangle, given his length, shooting, and overall feel for the game. I doubt very much that'll he'll get a jersey at any point this season, but he's more useful than Outlaw.
I hope they get at least something for Outlaw

Like a deflated basketball or a half-eaten hotdog

And in other news, Andrea Bargnani has been ruled out for the first 3 games of the season due to a sprained vagina

Hehe

Giving Chris Smith a roster spot at the beginning of last season to try and make JR happy is one of the dumbest things the Knicks have ever done...and they have quite a laundry list of dumb in the last 15 years

He hasn't looked good, whether you want to look at Summer League or Preseason. A small player with no PG skills to speak of.

I don't see any reason to do anything without seeing him play first.

The deadline for picking up the third year on the contract...
manh george : 10/26/2014 5:48 pm : link
is October 31. So, they don't get to see him play much before making the decision.
The benefit of keeping Travis Outlaw wouldn't be his abilities
steve in ky : 10/26/2014 5:59 pm : link
but having his expiring contract as a trading chip.

Not saying they shouldn't cut him but the reason to keep him or not goes beyond if he can help the team or not. It goes to does keeping another player benefit the team more than what trading Outlaw might bring later.
Weird
DanMetroMan : 10/27/2014 7:57 am : link
Larkin would seemingly be gaining momentum right as they Knicks decide potentially AGAINST picking up the option unless the momentum is actually an attempt to boost his trade value.

Expirings tend to be overrated nowadays. If they think Wear can help them (even just as a big body who can knock down some shots) that may be worth it over the outside chance Outlaw's 3 million brings anything back.
Oy. not picking up a cheap option on a kid like larkin...
BeerFridge : 10/27/2014 8:09 am : link
it really is a superstars league. Crazy that you have to bail on 1.6 million.

As I stated, I am not saying they shouldn't cut him just pointing out that the decision isn't really about keeping a young prospect or an a "guy who was clearly not an NBA player" but instead between keeping the young player versus who they think the older player with expiring contract might bring in return.

Just trying to keep it in the proper context. I don't have a strong opinion either way.
Oh
DanMetroMan : 10/27/2014 8:21 am : link
yeah Steve I totally agree with you there. It's expiring vs. Wear (and they could send/risk sending Wear to the Dleague) it's not Outlaw as a player vs. Wear, Outlaw pretty clearly looks completely shot as a player.
im indifferent on the move...
Italianju : 10/27/2014 8:35 am : link
but since Wear wont see the court anyway it is a little interesting that they will cut Outlaw (and lose his expiring) for him. Unless they thought there was a good chance he was going to get picked up by someone else, which i guess is possible. I doubt Outlaw's contract would have been useful and we do have other contracts that are similar to his, but its players like Dalembert and Smith who are actually useful.
as for Larkin...
Italianju : 10/27/2014 8:37 am : link
i dont get this at all. Its a 1.6 option, unless the knicks thing is he is horrible i dont see why you wouldnt pick that up. Sure he hasnt looked great, but he is young and cheap. Im sure if they REALLY needed that 1.6 next offseason they could trade him somewhere for a 2nd rd pick.
per Stein
Enzo : 10/27/2014 3:36 pm : link
they traded Outlaw to Philly
I think the best move they made

is Phil Jackson coming out and saying Spike Lee is annoying and knows nothing about basketball as his mini-documentary about the triangle offense is getting released for play on MSG.
Spike Lee
bc4life : 10/27/2014 3:55 pm : link
treats the Garden like he does his movies - he has to be center stage unnecessarily (but at least a few of his movies have been good. His MSG performances unnecessary and annoying).
sucks about Larkin, if true
djm : 10/27/2014 4:10 pm : link
but he can still develop and turn into a player/asset.

He hasn't wowed anyone in camp which is disappointing but I didn't see enough bad from him to believe Larkin doesn't have a future in the NBA.

PG...such a hard position for this franchise to luck into...
