Would you want Rex Ryann as our DC?

JFIB : 10/26/2014 2:56 pm
Just curious how people feel. Let's say Rex Ryann gets canned after the season. Could you get past the bad blood and general douchiness? He has always been considered a great DC, if he were available in the off season, would you replace Fewell with Ryan? I'm not advocating for it, just interested in BBI opinion.
3-4 scheme
JonC : 10/26/2014 2:58 pm : link
You're talking big personnel turnover, and he's not a TC-type hire.
We've had this discussion like 500 times.
arcarsenal : 10/26/2014 2:58 pm : link
Most people realize he's a very good DC and would take him but he's not a guy the Giants would hire. It's never going to happen.
and TC always implements a 4-3

Absolutely

not.
On top of the above

I thin Rex Ryan is done as an DC. He's a head coach now and will probably get another gig as one.

Doubtful. No gm or owner will hire him again as a HC.

His reputation and proven track record of not understanding offense guarantees it

So tired of hearing about him being a guru and "exotic" blitzes. Wtf is an exotic blitz anyway? I don't recall anything Taylor did being considered exotic while it was more crrative than anything i've ever seen from DC's like Ryan.

kepler20 : 10/26/2014 3:12 pm : link
Would never hire rex.

But there's no guarantee that Tom won't be forced into retirement just like Gilbride.

His biggest problem "not understanding offense" was his lack of a viable QB to run one. His offense might have looked pretty good with Eli running it.

not because of scheme though. Belichick was a 3-4 guy until he was a 4-3 guy and then he was a 3-4 guy again, and then he became a 4-3 guy. A lot of the defensive minds are versatile enough to be innovative with a scheme that maximizes the ability and skill set of their personnel.

I think Rex can probably do that.

I just think there would be a lot of distractions and it doesn't fit so much with TC from a style standpoint, forget about scheme.

No,

he's too damaged
newmike2 : 10/26/2014 3:45 pm : link
and his presence would be too much of a distraction. I would like someone with his attitude and his mind, but Rex as a brand is too damaged IMO..
Rex Ryan is going to get canned after this year
SGMen : 10/26/2014 4:00 pm : link
No doubt in my mind as the Jets are just horrific. They may end up with the 3rd or 4th pick in the draft.

Assuming TC is not canned at the end of the year and a whole new regime (Reese would be let go along with some of the scouting department) brought in, no way TC would hire Ryan.

My gut tells me Ryan may take a year off from football and re-evaluate before he signs as a DC somewhere in 2016. He will not be a HC again given his porous track record.
Question is where or what team would look to him for HC position
micky : 10/26/2014 4:28 pm : link
If not, would he go to DC somewhere?

job. Coughlin would have to make that call and I think they get along from what i have seen. Hard to get rid of Fewell unless TC goes. Then who knows? A new GM and HC will be calling those shots.
I agree with all of you
JFIB : 10/26/2014 4:54 pm : link
I personally wouldn't want him. Wondering though who might be a good fit and available should the front office decide to make a change at DC.
I'd take him
Josh in the City : 10/26/2014 4:57 pm : link
as our DC in a heartbeat. That being said, I agree that there would need to be personnel changes to work with his scheme. But it'd be the first aggressive defensive scheme this team has ran since the 2007 Spags defense.
Don't like him personally,
Dave in Hoboken : 10/26/2014 5:01 pm : link
but he's an instant upgrade from Fewell. But it won't happen because of his big mouth.

I'd hate for another team in the division to hire him as a DC though...
I can't
mrvax : 10/26/2014 5:47 pm : link
see the Giants ever hiring Rex. Nope.
No Ryan can ever be a Giant......
Dry Lightning : 10/26/2014 5:48 pm : link
Anyone who thinks they can does not understand what this franchise stands for.
Aside from him being 9,000% better than Fewell,
Shockeyisthebest80 : 10/26/2014 6:15 pm : link
why would we want him?
Rex first question would be what's up with not playing Moore more
Mason : 10/26/2014 6:19 pm : link
with a typical Rex laugh and grin. It is Foolish not to play him.
I'd hire any loser off the street
bignygfan : 10/26/2014 6:37 pm : link
Compared to the bum we have now.

This is one of the most talented defenses in the league but you wouldn't know that.

Fire the Fewell!!! Super Bowl titles will follow.

He is a perfect fit for Washington. Their D has been aweful for a while and Gruden didn't hire him. They have a 3-4 personelle. He would fit perfectly there and you know Snyder would love hiring the big name!
He's a jerk
PatersonPlank : 10/26/2014 7:21 pm : link
and would likely cause issues. Not a Coughlin or Giants type of guy, not a character guy.
When was the last time
JoefromPa : 10/26/2014 7:49 pm : link
a Rex Ryan defense got a stop when it mattered. This idea that he is a good DC is more perception than reality.
Nope, he's a jerkoff
Geomon : 10/26/2014 9:28 pm : link
and a loudmouth and frankly, I'm not impressed by his defenses.
Anyone who thinks the Giants would ever consider....
Crispino : 10/26/2014 9:39 pm : link
hiring Rex has just not been paying attention. As good a defensive mind as he seems to be, a Buffon like, damaged goods, ex Jet coach has about as much a chance of getting hired by the Giants as Buddy Ryan does.
Or buffoon even.
Crispino : 10/26/2014 9:40 pm : link
:)
Don't Care for Ryan
Samiam : 10/26/2014 9:51 pm : link
But he is a very good DC, definitely one of the best. His defenses are always one of the better in the league. This year, he's playing with scrubs at both CB positions. That might have something to do with their record and that's not even factoring in a turnover machine at QB.

I agree. It won't happen for many reasons, however, damn he would be a big time upgrade.
Only one question for me
NbgBlue : 10/26/2014 11:21 pm : link
Is he a talented D Coordinator? I don't think there's any doubt he is. He would clearly be an upgrade over Fewell. So, yes, I'd take him in a minute, notwithstanding his history.
Right now...
silverfox : 10/27/2014 7:28 am : link

Hell Yes!
