Given what I have seen of Indy

Essex : 10/27/2014 9:08 am
Monday Night is looking like a shootout. Both teams can't get to the qb. If DRC can go, then we can put Bowman on TJ Hilton and hope for the best, but that is going to be a huge matchup problem for us.

And, while our offense has gotten much better from Detroit, our offensive efficiency is not great, which is also problematic in a matchup that promises to be a shootout, we will need to efficient. We can't have drives that get too the 40 yard line and stall.

Pittsburgh was really efficient and we need to be to. It is possible and I think this games gives us our best chance to win in the next four weeks.

Difference is
Josh in the City : 10/27/2014 9:13 am : link
that Tomlin realized the passing game couldn't be stopped and threw balance out the window. We're going to run it on 1st and 2nd downs and give our passing game a single chance to get a first down on 3rd and long. This coaching staff has become too pre-occupied with being balanced in recent weeks instead of sticking with what's working.

I will be adding to my personal record setting pace of turning the game off in the 3rd quarter as I have done more in the past two seasons than the last 30 years combined.
yup

we can take comfort that, win or lose, the team will strive for a perfectly balanced 50/50 run/pass ratio.

Don't overreact to what Pittsburgh was able to do against Indy. That's a really good Colts team.
NYG problem is the defense
JonC : 10/27/2014 9:31 am : link
The offense is a work in progress, and I expect a bump in performance as OB gets up to speed. The OL needs to play well, get the running game going, and hopefully the offense has a strong game.

Defensively, we've got a lot of problems and Luck will be licking his chops. The Colts as a whole are going to be very motivated after losing and giving up 50+.

NYG needs a win otherwise reaching 8 wins will be very difficult.
This team is headed for a top 10 pick this April.

has issues with injuries. they are not an excuse at this level.

look at PHI and DAL - they don't have injuries? look at ATL....they gave DET all they could handle. They don't have injuries?

at this level the back-ups are expected to be ready to go and keep the team competitive.
The good news after a rough season
JonC : 10/27/2014 9:36 am : link
is those premium draft picks. Early looks at the draft indicate we could get a blue goose or DE in the 1st, and another very good red chip player in the 2nd. This team desperately needs to add talent to both lines in order to re-establish both on Sundays.

I don't think they're going to be bad enough for a top 10 pick.

Look at the schedule after November 20th:

Jaguars, Titans, Redskins, Rams, Eagles.

The Steelers have a LOT of weapons on offense.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/27/2014 9:39 am : link
The Giants, with Cruz down and Jennings very iffy? Not so much.

The bigger problem, of course, is getting the defense off the field on third down.

With our defense and the master mind running it...we have no chance to stop any team with a winning record. Shoot out..?..now that's hilarious. ...shoot out...
This thing about balance is really mind numbing
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/27/2014 9:44 am : link
ANd I don't mean that I would prefer them to bomb it on every play, but the one tendency I picked up on from the first 4 games is that McAdoo doesn't mind running whatever works over and over till they stop it.

Now all of a sudden we HAVE to be balanced. Would anyone be shocked if TC inserted himself into the playcalling? What I'm not sure of is why.

and time of possession. What I saw in the last two games this will be very hard to accomplish. Our running game has been terrible. The OL would have to show great improvement and open some lanes for Williams because he is a straight line runner, as well as protect ELI. Tall order. Could be the beginning of the end of our season with the teams we are playing next.

defeatism alive and well on BBI. Glad some of you guys were not a part of the teams I played on or coached.

You all might be correct in your assessment of this team. But to be turning off a game in the 3rd quarter, if you really are a fan, is pretty surprising. To already be looking forward to the draft, after only 7 games have been played, is really kind of depressing, if you really are a fan looking forward to a season of Giants football.

Maybe you guys are just fans of "winning Giants football".

Whatever, to each his own. But when you come onto a Giants website, because you are excited about it being football season, and having another Giants season to follow, and looking for others that are eagerly anticipating the next game, and read about how the season is over for so many of you, it really is a downer.
You're free to ignore the thread, respectfully.

I look forward to every game, and there's a strong chance imo that this team will crawl to the finish line. There's plenty to discuss weekly, both in terms of seeing progress and weaknesses. Some can discuss the draft and also the game at hand, the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Sorry Joe. Its just not important enough for me to watch and let this team put me in a bad mood. I'd rather turn it off early and go do something productive to take my mind off of it. I share your attitude with other teams I follow, baseball, SF Giants fan since 1962, don't watch regular season games, but keep an eye on them, same with Celtics. Don't have the time to invest in following those teams like I do the Giants.

However, Giants are once a week, and only 16 regular season games, and since I do it with family, I do invest the energy.
The Giants don't play a type of football that would indicate a
Riggies : 10/27/2014 10:35 am : link
shoot-out would at all be a remote possibility to even consider.

They're undoubtedly going to do the same thing they did against Dallas (and sort of tried to do against the Eagles): force the run, being straight out run-first to be blunt, until late in the third quarter or early fourth when there is zero other option but to throw the ball and by then, it'll be too late anyway for it to matter one way or another.

Except the Colts won't let them sort of hang around like Dallas did. They'll just pour it on, exploiting the Giants' lack of pass rush and weakened (and, at times, as always, confused) secondary, especially coming off a big loss, and it'll be a wrap probably by the half. Coughlin, after the game, will again go on about how they have to keep running the ball heavily because if they throw the ball more or pass to set up the run, they will just turn it over.
Defense is a problem for most of the league right now.
arcarsenal : 10/27/2014 10:52 am : link
For the first time in NFL history, we had four different 400 yard passers in the same week yesterday (Ben threw for over 520)

We also had a game that didn't register a single punt (GB/NO) and that's the second time this year we've seen that after it had only happened one time in NFL history (1992, IIIRC)

The league wanted more "excitement" and more offense and now it is just very difficult to play defense.

The defenses people remember from their childhood (and really, not even that long ago) just don't exist anymore so you'd better be able to put points on the board because if you can't do it in today's NFL, you're toast. People will say "well, the Seahawks won with defense last year" but they were also a top 10 scoring offense.

If we're going to have any chance at winning this football game next Monday night, we're going to have to win the turnover battle and put a healthy amount of points on the board. Otherwise, forget it.
Well Curtis
Arkbach : 10/27/2014 11:43 am : link
expectations were for better. Perhaps if we didn't have a SB QB in his prime, an established SB coach, and what we thought was a decent defense we could enjoy 6-7 wins like old times. I, for one, am frustrated teams like Philly and Dallas can stay competitive every year sometimes with inferior rosters and the Giants can't despite two SBs.
OK, Philly had one bad year before Kelly.

Good post. Unfortunately our coach, despite being forced to hire a new offensive coordinator with a more modern offense, refuses to acknowledge the game has changed. Winning is not the ultimate goal - the ultimate goal is to have a perfect balance of run and pass plays.
Kind of topic but the nfl is basically a degrading product in my eyes.

It's not, but the thing is.. and I'm not an expert by any means, but I spend most of my Sundays watching football. I watch every game I possibly can and I don't only watch the Giants.. and being completely honest, there are barely any defenses that have truly "impressed" me this year.

This year more than ever it feels like the best defense is an offense that can move the ball up and down the field and put points on the board.

The standards for defense are so ridiculously low now. People were getting excited at how "well" Arizona played the Eagles offense yesterday and Foles threw for over 400 yards. People were praising LeBeau's defense for continuously pressuring Luck. He also threw for 400 yards and dropped over 30 points.

There used to be a time where multiple NFL teams had excellent defenses. Who has a defense right now that intimidates you? Even teams that were top tier defenses last year like Seattle and Carolina aren't great this year.

Giants' offensive follies, all the shut outs and utter flops, and archaic stubbornness worse.

To win this game we need to pressure Luck
JoeyBigBlue : 10/27/2014 1:06 pm : link
JPP, Hankins,Kiwi, Moore, and Ayers have to have great games. The Steelers had a ton of success getting to him yesterday. If we don't get any pressure, we're in a for a long long day. Demps will be tested. Luck throws a great deep ball.
.
arcarsenal : 10/27/2014 1:13 pm : link
We need to get to Luck but we really, really need our front 4 to generate some of that heat on their own.

Luck is a guy who, if you send extra blitzers, can be very elusive and if you let him buy time with his feet, he will KILL you down field by shredding the 1 on 1 coverages.

I think Rob Ryan pretty much sucks but the Packers expected him to send a ton of pressure and thought Rodgers would be able to completely exploit that vertically by finding guys like Cobb and Nelson singled up and he actually didn't do that and it worked out decently even though they still gave up a lot of yards in the end.

Fewell played them similarly in 2012 and did quite well.

Our front 4 will be the key to this game.
Yes, today the best defense is a good offense.....
Doomster : 10/27/2014 1:26 pm : link
If you put points up early on a team, you make them panic and make them one dimensional.....

Most of Eli's passes this year, are short passes.....if this offense gets behind early, it's like blood in the water....

This offense has no speed, outside of OBj.....I don't expect Jennings back, and if he was available, how effective would he be?

But it's just the opposite for a TC team....he gets a lead, and sits on it, instead of going for the jugular, and this allows teams back into the game....

Yeah, I'm a little lost on that one too. Going back to 2005:

2005 - Giants 11-5 (lost WC), Cowboys 9-7 (missed playoffs)
2006 - Giants 8-8 (lost WC), Cowboys 9-7 (lost WC)
2007 - Giants 10-6 (won SB), Cowboys 13-3 (lost to Giants)
2008 - Giants 12-4 (lost DIV), Cowboys 9-7 (missed playoffs)
2009 - Giants 8-8 (missed playoffs), Cowboys 11-5 (lost DIV)
2010 - Giants 10-6 (missed playoffs), Cowboys 6-10
2011 - Giants 9-7 (Won SB), Cowboys 8-8 (missed playoffs)
2012 - Giants 9-7 (missed playoffs), Cowboys 8-8 (missed playoffs)
2013 - Giants 7-9 (missed playoffs), Cowboys 8-8 (missed playoffs)

The Cowboys have been consistent only in their mediocrity, and haven't had even ONE signature win in all that time. Not one.

In the same time, the Eagles have had seasons of 4-12 and 6-10, missed the playoffs twice at 8-8, and have won a whopping three playoff games.

Fans of both teams would trade places with us in a heartbeat.
