NFT: NBA 2014/15 Season Thread ..........

MarshallOnMontana : 10/27/2014 11:22 am
This thread last year got over 3,000 posts. Worked out very well, why not do it again?

Season starts tomorrow with a pretty "meh" tnt doubleheader, but i'm just happy to have basketball back. I have a Cavs vs Clippers Finals this season. Jabari Parker rookie of the year. Lebron m.v.p. Detroit as a surprise team who will find a way into the playoffs this season under stan van gundy. What say you guys?

I think every single team in the east potentially got better with the exception of indiana and miami. It may not be reflected in the records by seasons end, but this is the deepest the east has been in quite a while talent wise.

It was actually his 9th game back, but the first time he probably looked like an all-star from start to finish of a game. 31 points. The best part was he only took two 3s.

2K14? 14 was great, but 15 is well worth the purchase price.

The only sports games I buy in consecutive years are the NCAA Football games, and even that's stopped now that the series is defunct.
if Karl Towns

Kentucky's team is scary good. If they make threes you have zero shot of beating them. The only way to beat them, hope you make a bunch of threes and hope they miss theirs

Ah, good to know it's not something more serious

As for Towns, not an impressive outing. He looked like Michael Sweetney out there. He was manhandled all game by UNC. What's his listed height? 6'10? 6'11? Willie-Cauley-Stein, who had a great game on both ends of the floor, towered over him. Season's young, but so far Jahlil Okafor looks like the better player and the safer bet.
i havent watched any college ball this year yet
MarshallOnMontana : 12/13/2014 2:45 pm : link
Though i plan to get a look at some of the top prospects a few times this year. This year just hasnt grabbed me like the hype around last years freshman class, i watched a decent amount last year.... all that said, everyone is making kentucky out to be unbeatable. Its still early and we've seen them trail in the 2nd half to schools like buffalo and columbia (all be it early 2nd half in games they won going away). I really dont know enough about them to break them down or offer anything more than a casual take, but i really have a rough time believing anyone is really as unbeatable in modern college basketball as so many think kentucky is. Its still single eimination. I watched a kentucky team with cousins, wall, eric bledsoe and patrick patterson lose to a west virginia team who doesnt have a single player i remember

damn golden state is just killing dallas in dallas right now without bogut. They just look incredible. No one is this good. Not even them. But this is a blast to watch while it happens. Playing .900+ basketball in the west for over 1/4 of a season is insane

Some folks in these parts say their first quarter of the season is merely "good."
Rose is going to get Thibs fired
dep026 : 12/15/2014 9:49 pm : link
0-7 from downtown with 6 turnovers. Thibs is too good of a coach to let this shit happen. Rose may in fact be uncoachable.

No way in hell he should shoot 7 threes in a game. And yet this is a frequent occurrence this year.
And does anyone else have
dep026 : 12/16/2014 2:19 pm : link
more brutal back to back losses than the Suns. Up 2 in both games, and lose on banked 3s. Crazy.

Harden needs a backup with length. Brewer can't shoot and is an overrated defender, but he is a good cutter and slasher on offense and can make plays on D. A good pick-up. The Rockets aren't done with the trades though imo. They're still missing a piece.

They need Terrance Jones to get healthy.
Jones will help

and I can't wait until the Rockets get fully healthy. But they're still missing a backcourt piece and Jones isn't going to solve that.

My ideal scenario is a Goran Dragic trade involving Jones once he gets healthy and solidifies his trade value. Rockets have been interested for a while and I hope they get something done.

The Warriors
santacruzom : 12/23/2014 1:59 am : link
had 36 assists, 6 players in double figures, and a 20 point victory over the Kings tonight... and the Kings actually didn't play poorly.
The Hawks have won 13 of 14
MarshallOnMontana : 12/23/2014 2:00 am : link
And the only loss was a 1 point loss at the buzzer against orlando. A tobias harris buzzer beater is the only thing separating them from a 14 game win streak. In the past week, theyve beaten chicago and had road wins AT cleveland, AT Houston, AT dallas, and the latter 3 games were played without jeff teague

This is a legitimate mid 50s win team with a healthy Horford (who is rounding into form after missing most of last year, just winning player of the week this week), plus another season in budenholzers Spur offense, and the maturation of some of their young talent. They are basically a poor mans spurs. 2 deep at every position, team full of guys who can shoot and pass, a lot of movement off the ball. They are a fun team to watch.

There are 5 teams in the East who will win north of 50 games this year, cant recall the last time that happened, and if Paul George was healthy it would be 6. This is the best the East has been in quite a while.

he has a shot, its not like he has stiff competition with so many injured rookies and wiggins being fairly awful. Wiggins may one day be a terrific player (ive never quite bought in on him being a franchise guy, but he can be an all star one day) but right now dude is hot garbage. Even defensively he is a bit raw at this level, we all knew his offense would take time. And just the other day flip saunders publicly knocked his effort, something bill self also had to do at kansas. Something about the guy is just missing mentally. I dont think hes a competitor at his core.

Anyway regarding mirotic, i said weeks ago once i got my first extended look at him back when you guys were visiting the clips that i thought he was easily the most advanced guy in this class. His skill level just immediately grabs you. He was the mvp of the 2nd best basketball league on the planet last year. I would love to see him getting big minutes on a team who was willing to put aside his current defensive deficiencies just to see the type of numbers he could put up.

I dont know that he will have the best career out of this rookie class or not, but hes clearly the best right now
Mirotic's problem
dep026 : 12/23/2014 2:20 pm : link
Is noah, gasol, and gibson. Tough to Crack those 3. But even last night he was getting major time in the 4th.

I'd like to see gasol get some popevich treatment. He needs some days off. But with gibson and noah battling injuries... he's forced to play.
LOL @ Miami
MarshallOnMontana : 12/23/2014 10:04 pm : link
Blowing a 20 plus point 2nd half lead and on the verge of losing at home to Philly. Bosh didnt play tonight, but still laughably pathetic. They fall to 13-16 on the season and the toughest part of the schedule is in front of them. Theyve had some injury issues this year, but even when both Wade + Bosh are in the lineup they are still sub .500.

They aint no 1994 Bulls. Lebron leaving just absolutely crippled this franchise and will render them totally irrelevant for the rest of this era. If not for paul

Atlanta gets another one against a top western team by beating the clippers.

Varejao went down tonight for the cavs with a foot/ankle and the cavs are holding their breath on it not being too serious. Dude is always hurt, and without him they are so soft up front

derrick rose is turning a corner
if not for paul
MarshallOnMontana : 12/23/2014 10:06 pm : link
Never finished that thought....

if not for paul george being out, miami probably misses the playoffs this year or is an 8 seed best case.

its been a month since theyve won 2 in a row

nice win for Philly. They will jump the Knicks within the next few weeks.
all i heard the last 4 years
MarshallOnMontana : 12/23/2014 10:32 pm : link
Were people who knew little to nothing about basketball overrating the shit out of lebrons highly flawed supporting cast. Using terms like superteam and stacked deck to act like Lebrons carry jobs were somehow less than impressive. The issues facing miami are not new. They just dont have the lebron deodorant

Worst rebounding team in the league, pitiful interior defense, nothing resembling a center on the roster, wade health questions, a mediocre (being charitable) coach in spoelstra, bottom 5 pg situation in the most stacked pg era ever. None of these are new issues . These are things they just used to plow through. Who would have thought losing little ol lebron would derail this "superteam". Thats what happens when one guy leads you in scoring, rebounding, assists and is your best defender at 4 positions. Even when replacing him with a recent 2x all star in deng, this team blows and is horribly constructed playing their gimmick small ball shit
I'm surprised Riley tried to salvage the team..
Sean : 12/23/2014 11:22 pm : link

Bulls with very impressive back to back wins
dep026 : 12/23/2014 11:24 pm : link
beating the Raptors and Wizards.

I really wished they traded for Brewer, as they need another wing defender. But they are getting healthy, and Rose was unreal from 2 point range the last 2 games.
kobe is sitting tonight
MarshallOnMontana : 12/23/2014 11:28 pm : link
And the lakers are rolling the warriors up 16. They may still lose this game (probably will), but theyre simply a better team without kobe on the floor. He is having one of the worst seasons in history in terms of negative value added. Weve never seen someone shoot this often and this poorly in conjunction and hes literally the worst defensive player at his position in the whole league. The on/off numbers are no fluke. Hes a terrible basketball player right now posting hollow stats through extreme selfishness at the expense of his team

Its going to be criminal that people will still have him top 10 ever. I know you arent Duncan's biggest fan, but its impressive how he still remains incredibly efficient at his age. He has had by far the better career.

In this era. The Horford/Millsap duo is so awesome, two really smart and skilled players. Kind of happy to see this team play so well. Along with Toronto, they're really giving this EC race some intrigue.
i would put duncan over kobe
MarshallOnMontana : 12/23/2014 11:49 pm : link
On an all time list too

10-15 range is fair for kobe because his longevity is pretty sick. He was a top 5-ish player for about 12 or 13 straight years. No easy feat. Never undisputably the best though. One mvp, a controversial one at that (id have given it to chris paul that year). If we are talking peak/prime, kobe may not be in the top 20.

At the end of the day i wouldnt drop him at all based on how poorly he is finishing up here. You just kind of throw it out like mj as a wizard, shaq at the end, plenty of others too. The notion of guys destroying legacies by hanging on is overdone, people forget. But boy is he having an absolutely brutal, team killing season. One of the very worst of all time for a volume scorer, arguably the worst

Cavs: 4th in Ortg and 21st in Drtg as of now

And now they lose their best interior defender in Varejao. Tristan Thompson is now the x-factor on the Cavs, they really need him to step up. I'm really worried about this Cavs team now.
This is not the cavs year
MarshallOnMontana : 12/24/2014 11:46 am : link
The varejao injury is huge. They will be in the mix and any team with Lebron has a shot. But too soft inside, too inexperienced in playoff basketball, too thin depth wise, they're going to need a year. This is the season to make an extended run, get love and kyrie some big game experience, move Haywood's non guArenteed contract for a piece in the offseason, make an addition or two for depth, and they're in business

They should go after Josh Smith
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 12/24/2014 11:49 am : link
He's a low IQ chucker but he could be a nice piece on the right team. He'd give the Cavs a pretty good defensive big, although he's not what he used to be.

I think he's going to Houston though.

I was really surprised they extended Varejo.

I am really getting hyped for the Bulls. I know teams like the Hawks, Raptors, and Wizards are improved.... but once Chicago figures it out defensively.... they are going to surge soon. Two big wins in a row. Should beat the Lakers on Xmas.

Just stay healthy.
