Arnett Moultire provided some nice defense against the Magic on Saturday with two blocks and two steals to go with six points, eight boards and two assists in 19 minutes.
He was roasted for his conditioning last season, but coach Brett Brown has praised Moultrie so far this year. The big man has a solid mid-range game and seems like a lock to be in the rotation. Just keep an eye on him for now.

Arnett Moultrie - F/C - 76ers

Arnett Moultrie played 34 minutes off the bench against the Celtics on Thursday, making 8-of-19 from the field for 16 points with nine boards, three assists and two steals.
The big minutes are interesting and Moultrie looks like a new player this season. He had major conditioning issues last season and was in the doghouse, but coach Brett Brown has said he's been impressed at camp so far. Moultrie is a decent jump shooter and projects to be in the rotation. We'll still need to see a lot more before we suggest him in anything other than a very deep league.

Arnett Moultrie - F/C - 76ers

Arnett Moultrie looked great in his preseason debut against the Celtics on Monday, scoring 12 points with six boards and two turnovers in 22 minutes.
He shot 6-of-10 from the field and it was a mid-range fest. Moultrie was more impressive on defense and he was getting up and down the floor pretty well. Henry Sims is still the favorite to start and is a better pick right now, but a couple strong games from Moultrie could change that.

Arnett Moultrie - F/C - 76ers

Coach Brett Brown has been impressed with Arnett Moultrie at camp.
"I think it’s a statement any time somebody comes back into a camp because as coaches you’re not with them all the time," Brown said. "You’re always curious how somebody looks. He has put in time, which to me is a real strong indication of his attitude coming into this year. It’s a positive reflection." Moultrie squandered his chance last season because he showed up out of shape. This year, he'll have to have a great camp to earn his playing time. Henry Sims is still the big man to grab after Nerlens Noel, but keep an eye on Moultrie.

ESPN Fantasy Projection: The 27th pick in the 2012 draft, Moultrie has been a complete bust to date. He's been out of shape, unable to stay in the rotation and served a five-game suspension last season for repeated violations of the NBA's drug policy. He's only 23, and there was offseason buzz that he was working hard and getting in shape, so keep an eye on him this preseason to see if it's true. --TC
well we don't have a second rounder

to offer up until 2018 so it's not like we're giving up anything that will benefit the team in the short term, but why not just waive Outlaw or buy him out?

Trading an expiring Outlaw contract for this guy would suggest more than a passing interest. They must see something they value.

And he IS a young big to work on, who's had a resurgent preseason month.
Because Moultrie can be a valuable rotation player maybe even

what if Wear makes the roster instead of this guy?
Wouldn't
DanMetroMan : 10/27/2014 4:01 pm : link
make sense to give up a #2 to dump Outlaw unless they intend on keeping Moultie. Jackson openly said Wear eventually would go t the dleague anyway.
There's room for both, isnt there?
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/27/2014 4:01 pm : link
Anyway, Wear seems more D-League bound than anything. Nice undrafted free agent find.

Moultrie was a first-round draft pick and he's 23. My guess would be he's going to get a really good long look.

per Iannazonne, Moultrie has already been waived.
So they would give up a second and a swap of seconds...
manh george : 10/27/2014 4:03 pm : link
to pick up a player they don't intend to keep?

Doubtful. Besides, Moultrie sounds as if he can be a player if he is in shape. Very big and young.
That doesn't make any sense.
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/27/2014 4:04 pm : link
There has to me more to it. There's no reason to trade a player and a pick when Outlaw is on his last year if you want to clear a roster spot.
Seems like he was having a solid preseason...
Italianju : 10/27/2014 4:04 pm : link
and he was a first round pick just a couple seasons ago. Considering Outlaw is garbage it seems like an ok move to me.

It does mean the Dleague for Wear but thats ok, he probably needs the playing time anyway.
I guess it was a salary dump.
manh george : 10/27/2014 4:05 pm : link
.
What
DanMetroMan : 10/27/2014 4:05 pm : link
was the purpose of adding Moultrie at the expense of a 2nd rounder to waive him? Makes no sense.
SALARY DUMP
SicilianGMEN : 10/27/2014 4:06 pm : link
thats the reason
And
DanMetroMan : 10/27/2014 4:06 pm : link
why was Jackson so open about liking Wear while still admitting he would land in the dleague eventually?
yeah that part doesnt make any sense....
Italianju : 10/27/2014 4:06 pm : link
or are we that far up against the tax line? Moultrie was going to make like 1.1 which means we would only save 1.9 mill, not sure its worth giving up a second rounder to save under 2 mill.

saving the salary and associated luxury tax immediately comes to mind.
Kind
DanMetroMan : 10/27/2014 4:07 pm : link
of silly for Jackson to pump this kid up... doesn't that make other teams more likely to take a look?

“Travis Wear is another impressive rookie,” Knicks President Phil Jackson told ESPN.com. “He’s 6-10 with a terrific handle, outstanding athleticism and a nice touch from beyond the arc. He was overshadowed at UCLA, but has the skill set to play every position from 1 to 4. We’ll eventually place him in the D-League, where his possible NBA future solely depends on his ability to learn how to defend.”

Seems weird to value the cash more than the draft selection.
although they do save 2 mill...
Italianju : 10/27/2014 4:10 pm : link
and you can usually buy second rounders for way less then that, of course you must have some of your 3 mill per year left.

once you factor in repeater penalties
Enzo : 10/27/2014 4:14 pm : link
and such it's possible Outlaw's total cap and luxury hit was way north of $10 million or so. Just another side benefit of the Bargs trade (i.e. his big salary on the books for this season) and other overpays over the years.

it's no coincidence we played a lot better last season once he went down with the season ending injury. He's an offense only player who sucks on offense.

He looks like he's never played the sport of basketball at times. I understand IN THEORY why coming into the draft people liked him but he's as if Dirk's talent was sucked out by a vacuum.
Sixers should be put into receivership
Deej : 10/27/2014 4:29 pm : link
It will never happen but it should. The way they're running that team is very detrimental to the league. Other owners should be up in arms over the shit product the Sixers are foisting on the league -- and remember, half their games are played on the road, so the other owners are absolutely suffering in ticket sales whenever the Sixers come to town.
Of course Moultrie starts to play well
Section331 : 10/27/2014 4:33 pm : link
and the Sixers trade him. I guess they figured they wouldn't have to worry about that possibility with Outlaw. What they are doing is a league-wide embarrassment.
the problem
Enzo : 10/27/2014 4:40 pm : link
is that Philly is 100% executing the proper strategy given the CBA and the draft lottery rules. Plenty of teams have tanked before but it would seem nobody has done it on this scale before.
Good move by Phil
Anakim : 10/27/2014 4:46 pm : link
Save some dough and it's more than just 2 million dollars because we're in the luxury tax...so a 2nd rounder and a swap of second rounders for a saving of more than 2 million...
thing that is making philly even worse...
Italianju : 10/27/2014 4:49 pm : link
is that they keep drafting guys that cant play their rookie year. If they had Noel last year or Embiid this year they might not be as horrible.

And i 100% agree that PHilly is doing this the right way. If you arent going to be good then you might as well be horrible. it would suck as a fan that you dont get to see your rookies like Noel or Embiid, but they are both guys that they got a few spots below where they would have gone if they were not hurt.

Enzo : 10/27/2014 4:50 pm : link
Dolan is/was his willingness to spend. You can't call him cheap, after the payroll for this team is still sky high. But it's clear he's mainly interested in keeping the building full and not necessarily in traditional team building.

Guys like that don't grow on trees. Definitely worth a look, especially for a guy such as Outlaw, who probably was not going to play.

I see what Jax did here. Next time Dolan calls to recommend a trade, Jax will say "I saved you $4.7 million on Outlaw. Leave me alone."

My opinion is volatile, and I'll gladly change it if we had any other motive to do this deal other than to get Dolan more coke money.
