Listening to Coughlin/Reese

chrispisano66 : 10/27/2014 4:16 pm
Some notes from listening to both of these guys.

Both feel "training wheels" need to come off of this new offense so to speak. Need to score points in this league.

Coughlin likes what Randle has been doing, EXPECTS to see more.

Reese would like to see Williams improve on reading his blocks. Can't just take the ball and crash into the line. Was doing this better in pre-season, needs to get back to that.

Coughlin and Reese both complimented Prince on his play through 7 games. Played Dez really well outside of one play in which he gambled and lost (when Bryant got down to the 1 yard line).

Reese said JPP is back and playing at an extremely high level. Mentioned how those around him need to take advantage of matchups created by the attention JPP requires.

Both feel very comfortable with McLain stepping in for Beason. No surprise here as this has already played out over the course of the first half.

Both taking the "9 game season" approach. Reese feels the division will tighten before all is said and done. TC says message is to play above the X's and O's.

I liked the sense of urgency I heard from both and I can only hope this plays out on the field as well in terms of TC being more aggressive whether it be game-planning or in game decisions. They are going to be a heavy underdog for the next month or so so let's see if we can't steal 2 wins by breaking some of the usual conservative tendencies.

There are low expectations for playoffs and the next 4 are more than tough, but if they can still alive through this stretch the remaining schedule would indicate they can play some meaningful football into December which I'll sign for at this point.

are you seeing Coughlin's comments. He didn't say any of that during his presser.

On WFAN?

Coughlin wants the training wheels off?
MOOPS : 10/27/2014 4:31 pm : link
Isn't he the guy that demands a 50/50 balance pass vs. run?
At this point
mrvax : 10/27/2014 4:33 pm : link
why not play very aggressive on both sides of the ball?

Sounded like Reese wanted them to loosen the reigns more than Coughlin. Coughlin is still stressing balance, though he did seem to fully understand we are not scoring enough points to win consistently in this league.
Well, unfortunately,

we play 5 teams with winning records....4 teams with losing records....based on the last two seasons, that means 4-5, or a 7-9 record....no playoffs again....out of the top 10 in the draft again....

I have no problem running the ball, but not on every 1st and second down, like it felt we did versus Dallas.
Coughlin can be overly conservative--we all know that
oipolloi : 10/27/2014 5:04 pm : link
and except for those who can think TC can do no wrong, most believe that he made a mistake by altering the offense to rely on the power run the last two two games.

nonetheless, TC has also shown an ability to "self-scout" and correct what he is doing wrong. Let's hope that's what happens over the bye.

yeah that run, run, run, punt really set the tone....
Read Eli's comments from a few weeks back

They need to be able run when defenses show two safeties back. Otherwise you're fucked in both the run and pass game. They haven't been getting it done these last few weeks and they've been forced to run even when ineffective just to keep defenses honest.
if it really was coughlin
japanhead : 10/27/2014 5:31 pm : link
who decided to go more run heavy vs. the eagles and dallas, despite the fact that the starting running back is out with an injury, and the rookie 4th rounder has not acquitted himself all that well and is probably better at blitz pickup than running, then i really question his ability as a coach at this point. it's bad enough he's retained fewell and quinn, but if he's also having a negative impact on the offense, what is he actually bringing to the table that is an asset? making power points and quoting dead war generals? voting to draft guys from BC and syracuse who are of "high character?" leading the team prayer? i'm at a loss.

it seems to me that any time he's done anything good for the team it's been management having to force his hand... stop throwing embarrassing tantrums on the sideline, stop being a dick to the press, stop alienating all the players by treating them like bad children, lose gilbride and import a new offensive system.. have i missed anything?

the blowout losses throughout his entire tenure, but particularly the recurring shutouts over the last several seasons are too much to ignore at this point. i think his time has more than passed, regardless of how "energetic" he is in his old age. i can't help but regard him as part of the problem.
Coughlin thought we
TMS : 10/27/2014 5:41 pm : link
had a running game before we lost Jennings and we did in the three game win streak. He has to rethink that now whether he likes it or not. We are too predictable for our talent level especially on the OL.
I don't think
AnishPatel : 10/27/2014 6:05 pm : link
it's whether he likes the running game or not, but more of the theory of staying balanced. That's something he seems to bring up a lot. So whether the running game is effective or not, I think he will run for the sake of balance at times.
The things that really hurt our season
SGMen : 10/27/2014 6:23 pm : link
First, what a shame Will Hill decided to smoke pot and get suspended for 6 games. It is my firm belief he'd have kept this defense fast and much more productive. We likely at least beat AZ if he had stayed sober.

Second, losing W. Thurmond really hurt too as he was a solid 3rd corner. Can you imagine a backfield with both a healthy Thurmond and Will Hill?

Third, Victor Cruz injury.
Fourth, Odell Beckham's hamstring injury which held him back and out of the first few games.
Imagine our offense had Beckham been able to practice and play along with Cruz?

You can't have everything but I think these things hurt most. The Schwartz injury is harder to gauge but I guess that hurt too.

Injuries are part of the game but we don't have the depth to overcome the number we've had to date.
As usual
djm : 10/27/2014 7:53 pm : link
We lose our starting rb and the entire offense goes into the shitter.

2012 Bradshaw and Jacobs fade, we lose Andre brown and the offense goes flat.

2013 Andre brown is hurt before week 1 and David Wilson isn't ready and the offense can't move after week 1.

2014 we are running the ball effectively through 4-5 games only to lose Jennings this time. Offense is once again mediocre at best.

We needed to add more RB and WR and TE talent this offseason. Adding Jennings was nice. Adding beckham was nice. Need more.
agreed with djm

You need weapons to go to war with.. they have to get more talent at those positions somehow..
almost every year
japanhead : 10/27/2014 7:57 pm : link
it's a litany of injuries, often clustered at one position. this year, it's the secondary. that they spent the bulk of their extra cap space attempting to upgrade the DBs, it's an especially bitter irony. i also think they ought to oust the medical and training staff along with coughlin after this season. something about ramming one's head into a brick wall...

Said that...TC said the same bull..we have to execute. ..
I think reese wants tc to get more deep balls. ..

One factor on O...we need to run some. ..
and I think tc knows jennings isnt coming
back soon and for long....I think he
will be injured all season..Thats why we needed
to sign Jones...or someone and got time w
bye to acclimate. ...

Good Post.
Whoa! Bradshaw did not fade. The Giants released him coming off
Reese's Pieces : 10/28/2014 7:56 pm : link
a 1000+ season and a 4.6 yard average. Giants did not want to pay him. In fact they probably couldn't sign him due to an awful cap situation.

He's having the best year of his career with the Colt's powerful offense. Splitting time with former overall third pick Trent Richardson he is outrushing Richardson 371/4.9 against 358/3.5. He is third on the team in receptions with 31 for 264 yards and 6 TDs. He's scored eight of the Colt's 28 touchdowns. Big fan favorite.

Just another blunder by Reese and his anti-veteran ways.
