Since pretty much page one of A Game of Thrones, a terrible threat has been hanging over the land of Westeros — the Others, those supernatural butchers who raise the dead. And now at last, in his new book The World of Ice & Fire, George R.R. Martin gives us details about what would happen if the Others win. Spoilers ahead...

At first glance, Martin's new book might seem like just a throwaway tie-in volume, a drip of methadone for everyone who's in withdrawal symptoms awaiting the next novel in the series, The Winds of Winter. But The World of Ice & Fire is surprisingly jam-packed with information, and does a lot to flesh out the already rich world-building of Martin's series. And there are tons of gorgeous illustrations, some of which we're featuring here.

SPOILERS to a degree - ( New Window )

Who think he is trolling everyone and has all the books done. His co-authors on this book who run the Westeros.org site, said he delivered 300,000 words for this new book to them in about 6 months.
Oh he's absolutely trolling us at this point.

To coincide with the HBO series. The last book will come out right before the last season.

He better release the Winds of Winter soon.

This book spoils some things, and also offers some more subtle clues about other things as well. It's a pretty cool idea actually, and isn't just some money grab. It really is a new book with new material.
I attended his Sunday press chat at the 92nd St. Y, and got the book.

It's fun on its own terms. Good artwork too, if you like fantasy illustration.

Basically, the new book answers the question: what would come out of an extended bullshit session between Martin and the geekiest of ASOIAF geeks? The Swedes from westeros.org lay out their version - much of which we've seen elsewhere - and Martin corrects them, verbosely. Most of his material had to be cut, but will be reassembled into an eventual companion to ASOIAF that he playfully calls the "GRRM-arillion". (Get it? Wink, wink. But Martin would NEVER encourage comparisons to Tolkein. Ever.)

Is Martin trolling or procrastinating? Who knows? If he's trolling, he does a masterful job of disguising it as procrastination.

I think he had the framework of the first three books rolling around in his head for a long time so he was able to quickly deliver GoT, CoK, and ASoS. It always easier to ask questions and build a world then end a story. Look at something like Lost as a good comparison. I very much doubt he is sitting on the books. That being said uber nerds who analyze his calendar and typical work rate estimate that we may see an announcement for Winds of Winter in spring, followed by a summer release.
